Azerbaijan. Ancient Sheki. Shebeke and halva are unique creations of masters. Azerbaijan The set has instructions translated into Russian

Shebeka was one of the most typical sailing ships of the Mediterranean in the 17th - XVIII centuries. At first, the xebek had from 30 to 40 oars, which in calm weather turned it into a galley. Later, the number of oars decreased sharply because the main driving force The xebeks became three lateen sails, mounted on three masts. This vessel was fast and very maneuverable and, due to its shallow draft, was widely used in shallow waters. There were 7 six-pound guns on the sides, and 6 three-pound culverins on the bulwarks. All these features became the prerequisite for the xebek to become the basis of the pirate fleet. Such ships were especially formidable among the pirates of Algeria and Morocco. In the 18th century, this type of ship appeared in the Spanish and French fleets.

History of the ship Sciabecco (Xebec)

Sciabecco (Shebeka) is an armed sailing-rowing vessel that was widely used at the junction of the Middle Ages and the Modern Age for military and transport purposes. It was especially used in the Mediterranean region, in particular the xebec was a favorite ship of local pirates. Their difficult craft was facilitated by the narrow and long hull of the ship and extended stems. This gave the shebeke a good move, allowing it to both overtake prey and evade pursuit. By comparison, the xebec was similar in appearance to galleys and caravels and was significantly superior to them in terms of speed. Slant sails were used here, which is generally typical for the Mediterranean Sea, and the number of masts on which they were attached was three.

The length of the xebek was 25-30 m, the rear deck protruded significantly beyond the stern, and the underwater part of the ship had a sharp shape. As a rule, ships of this type were armed with from 16 to 24 guns, depending on the caliber; this was quite enough to fight off pirates, as well as for sea robbery. If necessary, when there was no tailwind, oars were used here. The total number of rowing pairs was 20, and the direct process was most often carried out by slaves from among the vanquished. At that time, the fate of the sea was characterized by exceptional changeability, and yesterday’s pirate could well have ended his days chained to the rowing bench.

Description of the kit for building a model of the ship Sciabecco (Xebec)

A prefabricated model of the famous ship was created by specialists from the Italian concern Amati, which produces museum-quality products. In this case, modellers are presented with a product distinguished by its original shapes, as well as impressive artillery, lateen sails and an unusual manufacturing technique. The casing includes an inner layer of linden and an outer layer of walnut. In this case, the body is assembled from elements cut using a laser. Thin plywood is used for the main deck, which makes it possible to fix it in the desired position. The kit includes 20 lattice hatches, as well as a platform for officers with a skillful support, also created using a laser.

The stern of the model is decorated with small symbols depicting a Livonian cross, and there are also gun ports. The yards for Latin type sails are significantly larger than the size of the masts, which reflects the original appearance of the xebec. For the rigging, the kit contains 4 threads that differ from each other in diameter, and the sails are created from fabric, also present in the kit. At the same time, oblique rigging is traditionally easy to manufacture, especially since the authors have the opportunity to use detailed illustrated instructions in Russian and drawings that greatly facilitate assembly.

Upon arrival in Sheki, I felt sick... Some bad pattern emerged - this is the second time in a row that I have been sick while traveling. I arrive somewhere, can’t get out of bed for almost the entire day, and only in the evening do I find the strength to go outside. And the next day I get up as if nothing had happened. So it is this time. I think I ate something non-kosher... I suspect that this time it was a green persimmon. It's early, early to buy persimmons in October! But, be that as it may, in the evening, despite the additional rain that was gathering, we still went to explore Sheki. And I haven’t regretted it for a minute!

As you can see in the photo, Sheki is surrounded by mountains, and to get to the main attractions of the city, you need to gradually climb the mountainside. Sheki is one of ancient cities Caucasus, and very beautiful, paved with stone. And I really love old cities, much more than modern ones. The first on the way was the Sheki caravanserai of the 18th-19th centuries. It is still used as a hotel, and the rooms there, by the way, are not very expensive (if you have time to book, because inexpensive rooms, apparently, are sold out very quickly):

I really liked their phone number:

Inside, the guest is surrounded by an atmosphere of antiquity, as indeed throughout Sheki:

Once inside, you find yourself in a cozy rectangular courtyard, which is surrounded by rooms on all sides. Previously, merchants left their goods on the first floors, while they themselves lived on the upper floors. Nowadays it is customary to take all your belongings with you to your room. The courtyard itself is decorated with greenery, and inside there is amazing silence:

Turning to the side, we discovered another attraction - a mosque:

And then we went up to the fortress:

The city has a heroic past. During its history, the city had periods when it maintained its independence, and in the 40s of the 18th century, uprisings began to arise in Sheki, which was under the yoke of Iran. In 1743, Sheki resident Haji Chelebi, with the help of his associates, killed Nadir Shah's henchman, the cruel ruler of Sheki Melik Najaf, and declared himself the khan of the independent Sheki Khanate with the capital, of course, the city of Sheki. The enraged ruler of Iran, Nadir Shah, in order to bring the Sheki people into obedience, attacked Sheki with a large army in 1744 and kept the Gelyarsan-Gerarsan fortress under siege for four months (not this one in the photo, it is a little away from the city, so that fortress we did not see) where Haji Chelebi took refuge. By the way, in translation the name of the fortress means “Come and you will see.” This is exactly what Haji Celebi responded to the offer to surrender. By order of Nadir Shah, the city was destroyed, fields and gardens were destroyed. However, all this did not break the will of the Sheki people, who decided to put an end to Iranian oppression once and for all. Nadir Shah was forced to lift the siege of the fortress and leave Sheki. The Chelebi dynasty ruled the independent Sheki Khanate until Azerbaijan was annexed by the Russian Empire. The Sheki Khanate flourished and was famous throughout the world for its luxurious silks.

These same khans built the fortress in the photo and the palace, about which below. According to most evidence, the grandson of Haji Chelebi. Who is interested in a few letters about the Sheki khans.

Palace of Sheki Khans:

The palace is very modest in size, not even comparable to a modern mansion, but it is very elegant, with many carved details and patterns. It is so beautiful that it is deservedly a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List:

The beauty inside is amazing! It is so richly painted that it takes your breath away, and the most interesting thing is the shebeke, stained glass windows made using a special technology developed by Azerbaijani craftsmen, made from small wooden parts without the use of glue or nails, the entire structure is held together only by connecting these wooden parts together details. About 10,000 parts are needed for 1 square meter of shebeke. Can you imagine what a delicate and painstaking work this is! The view from the outside does not convey the full picture, but from the inside it looks amazing when the light, penetrating through the shebeke, leaves colorful patterns on the floor! For the wall paintings, not random subjects were chosen, but collected according to a specific theme, for example, the wall paintings of some rooms were intended to symbolize the wealth and power of the khan, others - noble origin, and others were dedicated to military power. In each of the rooms there was a carpet on the floor, exactly repeating the image on the ceiling.

Unfortunately, photography inside was strictly prohibited, and we were followed everywhere by a museum woodpecker. But you can see this beauty on LiveJournal annataliya . I can’t imagine how she managed to take so many photos, and what she and her husband did with the museum woodpecker at that moment! Here are a few photographs for clarity; Natasha’s comparison with the box is very correct:

On my own behalf, I can only add a view of the city from the palace:

And the nearby church:

There is a museum next to the palace, and not even one. But since it was in the evening, we only made it in time. Here are some exhibits.

Snakes living in Azerbaijan. Please note - viper:
