Carnation grenadine planting and care. Clove grenadine: description and cultivation. seedling care

2012-06-11

Carnation Grenadine is less known to amateur flower growers than Turkish, but meanwhile it is much more valuable in appearance, aroma, and ease of cultivation.

The flower looks very impressive: the stems are tall, straight and thin. The leaves are narrow, silvery in color, located at the base of the bush. Flowers white, pink, red. And if you carefully select the testicles, you can achieve 80 percent terry! The flowers have a pleasant and strong clove scent and stand well after cutting (5 to 10 days). The beginning of the flowering of Grenadine coincides with the end of the flowering of the barbatus, and the end - with the beginning of the flowering of the annual carnation Shabo. It is convenient that Grenadine blooms at a time when there are few flowering plants.

On fertile soils, the bushes grow up to 40-60 cm in height, and the diameter of the flowers is from 3 to 6 cm. I noticed that in the first year of flowering, 8 to 20 flowers form on the bush, in the second year - from 5 to 50. flowers in the third year. Mass flowering lasts about a month. I plant carnations in an elevated, open, well-lit area with a slight slope for the flow of autumn and spring waters. Temporary stagnation of water has a detrimental effect on the condition of the carnation, and in low places all plants usually get wet.

To get really good specimens, I cultivate loam, having previously (for 2-3 years) filled the soil with organic fertilizers: manure, compost, peat, etc. (10-15 kg per 1 sq. m, including 2-3 kg of fecal matter) I sow seeds in the second half of April in boxes or on a warmed bed, but it can also be simple. I start picking seedlings on the ridges in mid-June. Distance - 5 × 5 (better even 7 × 7 cm). I plant in the ground from July 20 to August 20 and, of course, with a clod of earth. Before planting in the hole, I add 200 g of an organomineral mixture (peat - 3 kg, humus - 2 kg, superphosphate - 2 kg, woody - 2 kg, mullein - 1 kg). After planting, I spend two waterings (in August and September) at the rate of 0.5 liters of water per well per watering. This contributes to better rooting of plants before the onset of winter.

After watering, I loosen. Seeds are easy to get. But for this purpose, I specially leave terry carnation bushes and take care of them carefully: I put pegs, tie plants to them, water them, loosen the ground around them, feed them, etc. I collect seeds as they ripen - in August and September. Carnation Grenadine at the end of winter is heavily eaten by mice. To protect it, I do this: as soon as the ground freezes a little, I cover the carnation bushes with spruce branches or sprinkle them with sawdust by 5-7 cm. N.N. SMIRNOM

Today, many flower lovers have turned their attention to grenadine cloves. And this is no coincidence, because it can compete with many garden flowers in beauty and grace. It is especially popular in its homeland - in Holland, where it has been cultivated since the 17th century. There are many new varieties, among them there are species with double flowers. Garden carnation is called Dutch.

It is the garden carnation that is the progenitor of grenadines, which biologists even consider to be a separate species. This flower is not afraid of harsh winter, can withstand drought. But the most beautiful flowers are obtained if you plant a plant in a sunny bed with well-fertilized soil. Flowers prefer rotted manure, black soil, sod-podzolic or loamy soil.

preparing the ground

Flowers can be propagated by seeds or cuttings. Reproduction of carnations by seeds is considered an effective way, because it is available even to novice flower growers.

It is best to plant the seeds in prepared greenhouses for early seedlings in mid-April. Plants require fertilized soil. It should include:

  • humus - 5 parts;
  • weathered lowland peat - 5 parts;
  • sod land - 2 parts;
  • coarse river sand - 1 part.

It's important to know: clove grenadine should not be over-moistened. Heavy and damp soils do not allow the plant to reveal all its decorative possibilities. In addition, they are a source of disease, and even death.

The prepared soil is shed with a hot, slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate to destroy harmful microspores. The soil must be sufficiently moist before sowing the seeds.

Sowing

Since clove seeds are small, to distribute them evenly in the soil, you need to do this:

  1. Pour the seeds into the palm of your hand, fold it with a boat. The seeds will be on the "path" - the line.
  2. Take a toothpick and gently brush the seed onto the soil, gradually moving around the greenhouse.
  3. You can not fill the seeds with a thick layer of earth - no more than three millimeters.

Some flower growers offer a special way of sowing small flower seeds. It consists of the following. Clean snow is poured onto the prepared soil, rammed, and then the seeds are poured.

On the snow they are clearly visible, it is easy to keep the distance. After a week, you can see the sprouts.

Gardener's advice: as soon as the first true leaves appear (5-6 pieces), the seedlings need to dive, planting them at a distance from each other, not less than 6 cm.

Between rows it is desirable to adhere to the same distance.

Landing before winter

Most often, flower growers who have been dealing with carnations for many years practice autumn sowing seeds immediately into the soil before frosts begin. This is the month of October.

Such crops give friendly shoots in early spring, as soon as the snow cover melts. In no case should such crops be watered. But to cover young, tender sprouts is worth it.

There is no need to rely on the fact that the plants are cold-resistant, it is better, in order to avoid freezing, to cover the sprouts with spruce paws. They will protect the cloves from daily temperature changes.

At the same time, loosening of the soil and top dressing will be required. The best option are special mineral fertilizers for flowers. Re-feeding occurs in May or June. Before the start of budding, if there is no rain during this period, you need to shed flower beds with grenadine cloves.

We plant seedlings in a permanent place

Since the carnation is a perennial plant, it needs a permanent place. Transplanting is best done in late July or early August.

At a later date, transplantation is not recommended, because the carnation will not have time to take root, therefore, winter will be a severe test for it.

Note: each plant needs a fairly large space, so we plant sprouts in 30-35 cm.

First, we prepare the soil, shed it well. Before watering in the wells, we make the following dressings:

  • peat - 3 parts;
  • humus - 2 parts;
  • superphosphate - 2 parts;
  • wood ash - 2 parts;
  • mullein - 1 part.

When the plant takes root, carefully loosen the soil so as not to damage the root system. If there is heat, then repeated watering will be required.

How to care for plants

Caring for seedlings is not difficult - timely watering and loosening the soil to a shallow depth. At first, it is better to do this with a toothpick so as not to damage the roots.

The grown plants are planted in a permanent place in the flower garden in the second half of May, when frosts cannot harm them. When planting, the following scheme is observed: at least 20 centimeters between rows and plants.

With proper planting and care, beautiful powerful bushes are obtained, covered with a large number of juicy lush flowers. The Dutch carnation is hardy. In central Russia, it practically does not freeze out, it can withstand slight frosts. But this is the case if the soil is prepared correctly, and the plants are developed, have an excellent root system.

But rodents can do harm. You can save plants from them with the help of spruce branches. Snow must be constantly trampled to form an ice roller. Through it, rodents will not be able to get to the plants.

To get a good shoot and abundant flowering of carnation grenadines, use the advice of successful flower growers:

  1. For plants to develop well, the soil must be sandy.
  2. To grow a bush with lush flowers, you need special top dressing. Mineral fertilizer is added to a 10-liter bucket, which includes nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (3:2:1). Enough two spoons.

When the buds appear, the carnation needs to be fed again. Fertilizer too, but the proportion changes:

  • phosphorus - 3 parts;
  • potassium - 2 parts;
  • nitrogen - 1 part.

About 80 grams per bucket.

  1. Carnation grenadine varieties can withstand drought. In order for the plant to be able to wait for its owners, who cannot often visit the dacha, after watering, you need to loosen the soil and sprinkle with mulch.

Varieties

Currently, many amazing varieties of grenadine cloves have been bred. Among them:

  1. Gloria with red double flowers.
  2. Rosa Kenigin is distinguished by its terry, aroma of bright pink inflorescences.
  3. Kening des Gelben attracts flower growers with bright yellow flowers.
  4. Schneeflokke has snow-white flowers.
  5. Russian scientists can be proud of the Northern Lights, Coral, Carrot King, Rose.

Carnation Grenadine in the second year reaches a height of 50-60 cm. There are a lot of flowers on it, about 200 pieces. To get a lush bush, pinch the top shoot for the appearance of side shoots. When they grow to 20 cm, they need to be pinched again to make the bush even more magnificent. They do the same with Turkish cloves and shabot.

Whichever variety of carnation you choose, the method of growing them is the same. Therefore, there is no need to reinvent the wheel, work with grenadine cloves in the same way as with other varieties.

In order for the carnation to bloom for a long time and delight with its lush buds, you do not need to leave the first flowers on the bushes. They must be cut off.

To obtain your own seeds, double flowers should be selected. If there are few flowers on the bushes, then you can use artificial pollination. Deltoid and alpine carnations differ in the largest number of seeds.

How to grow a carnation shabot, see the advice of an experienced gardener in the following video:

Dutch carnation. The clove family. Comes from Southern Europe. In its culture, there are many varieties. Very valuable for decoration of gardens and parks, gives beautiful fragrant flowers for bouquets; popular all over the world. The Dutch carnation is incomparably better than the Turkish carnation in terms of the purity of the color of the flowers, it has a delicate peculiar aroma, is noted for the elegant shape of the flower and long-term abundant flowering (up to 60 flowers per bush). However, this culture is very unpretentious to growing conditions. And although by its nature it is a perennial, it works better in a two-year culture. If the flowering in the second year is not plentiful enough (up to 20 flowers), the plants are left for an additional wintering, then in the third year it blooms luxuriously.

Grenadine cloves deserve special attention. This herbaceous plant, forming a well-developed bush 40-60 cm high, is covered with a silver-gray bloom. The leaves are bluish-gray, narrowly linear, placed at the base of the bush. Stems are tall, straight, thin, rod-shaped. At the ends of flowering shoots are flowers, several pieces on each; they unfold gradually. Flowers come in a variety of colors: red, white, pink, yellow, pure tones, and striped with a marginal border. There are flowers terry, semi-double and simple.

Recently, through selection and hybridization, varieties have been obtained in which 80 percent of double flowers. Flower diameter 3 -6 cm. Flowering is very extended, from June to September. Mass flowering lasts 30-40 days, approximately from June 1 to July 10, depending on the timing of sowing: its beginning usually coincides with the end of flowering of Turkish carnation, and the end of mass flowering - with the beginning of flowering of annuals. In addition to the usual high-stemmed grenadine carnation, there are its dwarf forms with a bush 20-30 cm high. The most famous varieties of carnation grenadine are Mont Blanc - with white flowers, Rosa Kenigen - with pink flowers and Othello, which is dark red flowers.

Very popular and valuable varieties of Dutch cloves are: Viennese, Prague, Teichera and some new groups of carnations, which are also cultivated as biennials, for biological properties they are similar to grenadine cloves and differ from it only in varietal characteristics and flowering time.

Carnation Viennese dwarf reaches 20 - 30 cm tall. It blooms earlier than grenadines, and more abundantly (from 30 to 50 flowers per bush). The flowers are fragrant, double and simple, of different colors, white, yellow, pink and red, plain and variegated. Viennese carnation has more double flowers than grenadines. In terms of flower size, the Viennese carnation is smaller than the Shabo carnation, but the flowers are bright, more diverse in colors and shades.

Carnation Prague dwarf blooms two weeks later than dwarf Vienna. It has a wide variety of colors and shades. Blooms profusely. Best for soil flower decoration and for balconies.

carnation teichera

Carnation Teichera is noted for very gentle and pure flowering. It has many double flowers. It has been known in culture for a long time, it gives beautiful fragrant flowers for bouquets and is used to decorate flower beds.

All varieties of Dutch cloves are marked by frost resistance. In the middle lane, they winter well in the open field, they can withstand even cold, harsh winters. However, their overwintering to a large extent depends on both soil conditions and sowing time. Before the onset of winter, the plants should be well rooted and have a well-developed bush. To protect against diaper rash and rodents, plants should be covered with Christmas tree branches, and snow should be trampled around the plantation to form an ice roller, and thus prevent mice from reaching the area with carnations.

Carnation grenadine prefers open sunny places with a slight slope for water runoff in autumn and spring. Temporary stagnation of water has a detrimental effect on plants, and in low-lying places they almost completely get wet. The best soils for Dutch cloves are cultivated loams filled with organic fertilizers (manure, compost, peat are applied 2-3 years before planting) in the amount of 10-15 kg per 1 m2. On acidic soils, lime should be applied. Dry sandy soils unsuitable for cloves. Under good soil conditions, plants significantly increase the number of double flowers.

The Dutch carnation propagates more often by seeds; vegetative propagation is used only in cases where they want to save valuable specimens. The purity of the variety is ensured by compliance with spatial isolation.

Clove crops often have a very large number of non-double forms. In such cases, non-double plants are discarded, leaving the best terry forms with compact bushes and bright flower colors.

Seeds are sown in late April or early May in cold greenhouses or beds. It can be sown directly into the ground with a rate of 8-10 s per 100 m2. Shoots appear on the 8-10th day in greenhouses and on 10-12 in the field. The pick is carried out in the greenhouse soil or on the beds at a distance of 5 cm from the plant to the plant. In young plants, it is advisable to cut off the top of the stem from the beginning of development in order to promote the formation of shoots. At the end of July or at the beginning of August, the carnation is planted in a permanent place at a distance of 30-40 cm from the plant. Before planting, it is recommended to add 0.2 kg of mineral mixture to the hole, which consists of 3 parts of peat, 2 parts of humus, 2 - superphosphate, 2 - wood ash and 1 part of mullein. Watered at the rate of 0.5 liters of water in the hole. A few days after planting, loosen the soil under the plants and in the aisles. All this allows plants to better prepare for winter.

Carnation is propagated by cuttings in the summer during flowering, when typical signs of a flower are already visible. Cuttings of the best terry forms are planted in tightly fitted semi-warm greenhouses, closed with frames.

Cuttings usually take root within 12-15 days at a temperature of 22 °. Rooted cuttings are either left for the winter in greenhouses or transplanted into clay pots and transferred to a closed, cool room, where they are stored until spring. To obtain a large number of seeds, artificial pollination is used in the selected best specimens. In the Dutch carnation, the pistil does not develop simultaneously with the stigma, and therefore, without additional artificial pollination, fertilization occurs poorly. Seeds should be collected gradually, avoiding shedding. Under good conditions, the seeds remain viable for 2-3 years.

Carnation grenadine, especially its dwarf forms, is suitable for pot culture. They plant her in at the stage of budding. This carnation is also widely used in the form of borders, borders, ribbons, group plantings in flower beds. For flower carpets, dwarf forms are used. Dutch carnation flowers make good elegant bouquets. For this, it is best to grow grenadine, Teichera and Viennese forms with long peduncles.

Types of carnations video

The green color of a mowed lawn, of course, has a calming effect on the psyche, but after rest and relaxation, a period of wakefulness and activity is sure to follow, which is why bright flowers are so popular in landscape design, which, even when planted in small quantities, can cheer you up on the most cloudy day . The approach of summer heat makes flower growers think about which plant is best suited for the site. A good option is cloves. Due to its chic appearance, this plant is very popular among summer residents, in addition, there are many unpretentious varieties of cloves, which are practically not necessary to care for. These varieties include carnation Grenadine - an excellent plant for the harsh Russian climate. Who does not love the carnation, which is still considered a symbol of the revolution in France. How to plant a Grenadine carnation and care, when to sow the seeds, we will consider below.

The best varieties of cloves Grenadine

This carnation, which blooms in the first year after sowing, can be used as an annual. The name comes from an abbreviated form of the English words "no vernalisation", that is, "not requiring vernalisation". Plant height 40-45 cm, large non-double flowers of the most diverse colors.

Breeders have bred many varieties of Grenadine cloves. But the following varieties are recognized as the best among them:

  • Carrot King. This variety is distinguished by large terry buds, and thin straight shoots, reaching up to 60 cm in height. The petals of the plant, which emit a pleasant aroma, are painted in a rich bright red color.
  • King in black. Carnation Grenadine of this variety is distinguished by a dark brown-red color of buds with a purple tint. Compact shrub reaches 40-60 cm in height.
  • Delight. Under this name, a mixture of flowers with different colors is most often sold. Plants reach up to 60 cm in height, and are densely covered with fragrant buds with a diameter of 5 cm.
  • Coral. The variety is distinguished by its compact size, and pinkish-red color of the petals.
  • The Rose. This variety is valued for the rich pink color of the buds.

Each of these varieties will decorate your flower bed. But for this, some efforts will have to be made, to ensure proper care and planting of grenadine cloves.

Clove sowing Grenadine

Since clove seeds are small, for their uniform distribution in the soil, you need to do this: Pour the seeds into the palm of your hand, fold it in a boat. The seeds will be on the "path" - the line. Take a toothpick and gently brush the seed onto the soil, gradually moving around the greenhouse. Gardener's advice: as soon as the first true leaves (5-6 pieces) appear, the seedlings should be dived, planting them at a distance of at least 6 cm from each other. It is advisable to keep the same distance between rows.

When are Grenadine carnation seedlings transferred to a permanent place?

Since the carnation we are considering is a biennial plant, it needs to organize the optimal place of growth. Readers of "Popular about Health" should start transplanting seedlings towards the end of July or the beginning of August. It is not worth transferring plants in autumn, because with a late transplant they will not have time to fully take root and may not survive the winter. Carnation Grenadine grows best in open areas that are illuminated by the sun. The best option would be fertile and loamy soil. When grown on damp soil, fungal diseases can develop. Acid soil is absolutely unsuitable for growing plants. Also, plants do not tolerate stagnant water. With a high presence of groundwater in the country, carnations should be planted on a hill. Some types of carnations can also develop on sandy soils, but on condition that the soils are cultivated.

Young carnations are planted at intervals of thirty to thirty-five centimeters so that they have enough free space. The soil before planting should be thoroughly dug up and shed. Before watering, it is worth adding nutrients to the prepared wells, represented by three parts of peat, two parts of humus, two parts of superphosphate, two parts of wood ash and one part of mullein. After the rooting of young plants, it is necessary to carefully loosen the soil. If necessary, carry out additional watering. In the year of sowing carnation, Grenadine forms a bush, on which there are several shortened branching shoots.

Top dressing cloves Grenadine

Carnation Grenadine is fed three times per season. The first dressing is applied 14 days after planting in open ground or after the last pick. The role of fertilizer is ammonium nitrate mixed with superphosphate, or any other mixture based on nitrogen with the addition of a small proportion of phosphorus and potassium.

The second top dressing is applied during the period when the plant begins to form buds. At this time, it is better to use potassium sulfide in combination with superphosphate or any other phosphorus-potassium mixture.

The third time we fertilize during the flowering period, when the plants will spend a large amount of energy. Fertilizers are also used here, which are based on phosphorus and potassium.

Weeding cloves Grenadine

Weeding and loosening are carried out regularly as necessary, but it is worth remembering that the root system of the plant is superficial and loosening should be carried out so as not to damage it. Also, do not forget that this culture does not tolerate crust on the surface of the earth.

Watering clove Grenadine

Although carnation Grenadine is considered a drought-resistant crop, but during strong growth and the appearance of buds, it needs regular and fairly intensive watering. During flowering and seed formation, this need is greatly reduced. Usually in dry weather, the plants are watered once or twice a week.

For the winter, young Grenadine carnation plants should be covered with a loose layer of spruce branches and a dry leaf. In winter, young plants can damage mice. To protect against them, it is necessary to lay out baits and trample the snow around the landings. Do not rush to remove the shelter in the spring, because during the winter the root system of flowers is very exposed. Therefore, let the bushes recuperate a little after the cold weather, and only then remove the spruce branches or lutrasil. And also hold this event in cloudy weather so that the plants do not get burned from the bright rays of the sun.

Seedlings are planted in the flower garden the next year in May-June. Particularly valuable varieties of cloves Grenadine can also be propagated by cuttings. Green cuttings are rooted in early summer (at a temperature of 22 C), and in late July - early August they are already planted in a permanent place. For better seed setting, artificial pollination is recommended. Seeds ripen in late July - August, they should be collected as the boxes ripen.

Pests and diseases of clove Grenadine

Pests that are dangerous for cloves are nematodes, thrips and a bear. Fight them with insecticides.

Fungal diseases often affect cloves overfed with nitrogenous fertilizers. Waterlogged soil also contributes to their appearance. Most often, carnation suffers from fusarium, rust, mottling and alternariosis. Fusarium slows down the growth of bushes and causes the plant to dry out. With rust, small swellings appear on the sheets, and with mottling, blurry spots and streaks appear. The best way to avoid disease is proper care. It is better to remove diseased plants in order to preserve the rest of the plantings.

Important! Do not plant carnations next to tulips. They suffer from the same diseases, but the means of dealing with them are different. What cures carnations is detrimental to tulips.

Who does not love the carnation, which is still considered a symbol of the revolution in France. Many varieties of this plant are grown in Russia, but today we present one: grenadine clove (Dianthus caryophyllus var. Grenadin). How to plant and care, when to sow seeds, we will consider below.

The name of the plant is translated as the flower of Zeus. Homeland is the Mediterranean coast.

This variety was bred in the Netherlands in the 17th century, but is not yet very popular with our gardeners. But since grenadine blooms between the flowering of other carnations, it is worth planting it in an area where you can prolong the flowering of this fragrant flower.

Interesting!

It is a subspecies of the garden carnation. Flower seeds winter well in the soil, and the plant tolerates cold and drought.

The leaves, like most carnations, are narrow, but the color is green with silver, the straight stem reaches a height of 60 cm, double flowers from white to red. The biennial bushes are branched. Each produces a huge number of flowers. The fruits are multi-seeded, the boxes are filled with many small peas.

Important!

Carnation Grenadine feels great when cut. Up to a week you can feel its aroma wafting from the vase.

Sowing seeds for seedlings

In order for the flowering of carnations to begin as early as possible, it is necessary to sow it on seedlings. This is usually done in March or early April. It is planted in a greenhouse or greenhouse. If there are none, then all operations are performed at home. Carnation Grenadine is not demanding on growing conditions, but also has some features that must be observed when sowing, planting and caring.

Gardeners usually think about when to sow seeds for seedlings. It depends on the region in which the work is carried out, since the plants are transferred to the open ground after the earth warms up to a temperature of at least + 10 ° C and the cold stops returning. Most often, seeds in the Russian Federation are sown in February-March.

With early cultivation, flowering occurs in the first year of planting, although it is always more abundant in the second.

Action Description
Containers Selection of high pots, as the plant has a long root.

Preparation of a soil mixture with a neutral reaction.

Treatment from various bacteria with a solution of manganese, fill with earth.

The soil Loose, without stagnant water, drainage is laid at the bottom, 1/6 of the sand is present in the soil. Tolerates slightly acidic conditions.
Seed preparation Disinfection of planting material, placed for half an hour in a pink solution of potassium permanganate or treated with a fungicidal preparation. Washing with cold water. Soaking in a growth stimulator.
sowing Sow seeds on the surface, as they are very small. Lightly sprinkle with soil.

Carefully water the plantings. Cover with plastic wrap, glass or spunbond.

Terms Put boxes with seeds on a light windowsill.

The growth temperature is not lower than +12 ºC.

seedlings Appear after 1.5 weeks, the covering material is removed.
When to Water Periodic inspection of pots. If the soil is dry, apply drip irrigation. If damp, airing to prevent rot.
picking When 3 true leaves appear, seedlings dive.

Transplanting excess plants into large containers. Watering once a week or with dry soil, avoiding waterlogging, the protection is removed after 2 weeks.

Fertilization Once every 14 days, root dressing and spraying with mineral and organic fertilizers, adding them in turn.
Landing on flower beds After frost has left, planting in open ground by transshipment, so as not to disturb the root ball.

Care and features

Planting and caring for grenadine cloves depends on the growing region. It also depends on when the seeds should be sown. When growing a plant, the following rules must be observed:

  1. In the flower bed, sprouts are planted at intervals of 25 cm from a neighboring plant.
  2. May die in the spring due to excessive accumulation of moisture. Therefore, it grows better on an inclined flower garden, for example, on an alpine hill.
  3. In order to make the plant more dense, its side shoots are pinched.
  4. Feed with nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium in the first year in a ratio of 2:1:1. In the second year, nitrogen-containing fertilizers are reduced and potash fertilizers are added for more complete flowering.
  5. In the year of planting, grenadine forms a rosette.
  6. Flowers cover in autumn.
  7. For the full production of seeds, artificial pollination is carried out.
  8. Seeds after collection do not lose their ability to grow for 3 years.

Joint plantings

In one flower bed, carnation grenadine will go well with small plants: lobelia, border asters, dahlias "jolly guys", marigolds.

In some ridges, rockeries and mixborders, along with grenadine carnations, plants are sown that have the same growing conditions, following the rules of planting and care, determining when to sow seeds for a particular flower.

Advice!

Match the grenadines of the neighbors with either the same color or contrasting shades to the carnation.
