This type of weapon was widely used in the Landsknecht armies and among the Swiss mercenaries, who used it as the main weapon in the battle formation. A similar weapon called the sarisa was also very effectively used by the infantry phalanxes of Alexander the Great. In general, a regular spear can be considered a pike when it is too long to be wielded in combat with one hand.

Design

The pike is a long weapon, the dimensions of the shaft varied from 3 to 7.5 meters. The weight of such weapons ranged from approximately 2.5 to 6 kg. The sixteenth-century military writer Sir John Smith described the advantages of lighter pikes over heavier ones. In appearance, it was a wooden shaft, bordered with an iron or steel tip. The area in front of the point was often reinforced with metal strips called "cheeks" or langets. When the troops of both opposing armies used the pike in combat, it often developed into a kind of arms race in which they tried to use longer both the shaft and the tip, so that the spearmen of one of the parties could gain an advantage in battle. The extreme length of such weapons required a very strong wood shaft such as ash, the shaft of which was thinned slightly towards the point to prevent sagging at the ends, although this was always a problem when using a pike. It is a common mistake to call spears with a wide blade on the tips pikes, these types of weapons have their own separate names: halberd, glaive or vulge.

The long length of the pike made it possible to better concentrate the impact of the tip on the enemy, while the owners of this weapon found themselves at a distance unattainable by direct contact. However, such overly elongated lances proved to be too cumbersome in close combat. This meant that in order to better self-defense for close combat, spearmen were also equipped with shorter weapons, such as sword , mace or dagger. Basically, the spearmen tried to avoid such an unorganized battle in which they would be at a disadvantage. The position of a spearman in close combat was often aggravated by the absence shield, or the presence of only a small shield of limited use.

Application tactics

The pike, due to its bulky size, has always been intended for defensive use, often in conjunction with other projectile, firearms, or close combat weapons. However, more experienced troops were able to use pikes in aggressive attack. In each rank, the pikemen were trained to set up their pikes so that they met the enemy infantry with four or five layers of sharp points bristling from the front of the formation.

As long as the formation was held in this way, this formation could boldly head straight for enemy infantry, but such a march had obvious weaknesses. Warriors moved in ranks only in the direction of travel, in one direction, and could not quickly turn around or effectively protect the vulnerable flanks, as well as the rear of the formation. The huge mass of warriors wearing such bulky spears was very difficult to maneuver, so the movement was carried out only in the forward direction.

As a result, to protect the rear and flanks, such units of pikemen needed to have the support of other branches of the military, or to maneuver before contact with the enemy before he could hit their weak spots.

As Sir John Smith points out, there were two ways in which fighting pike units could confront each other: cautious and aggressive. The cautious approach involved fencing at the length of the pike, while in the aggressive approach, the warriors of the first five ranks quickly closed the last distance to the strike at close range, while making a single powerful dash. The first row of pikemen, being attacked aggressively, resorted to the help of swords and daggers if the actions of the pikemen of the first five rows could not break the opposing attack. Smith considered the cautious approach laughable.

Also, primarily as a military weapon, the pike could be surprisingly effective in individual fights. Many sources from the 16th century explain how the advantage of this type of weapon could be used by dueling participants. Swordsmen of that time often practiced duels with each other using long sticks instead of pikes. George Silver considered the 5m pike one of the most advantageous weapons for open combat, as it gave him superiority over all other weapons shorter than 2.5m or the sword and dagger/shield combination.

The use of pikes in antiquity

Although very long spears have been used since time immemorial in organized warfare (in particular, this is shown in works of art showing Sumerian and Minoan warriors and hunters), however, the earliest recorded use of a pike-like weapon in the tactical method described above refers to the Macedonian sarissa used by the troops of Alexander the Great's father, Philip II of Macedon, and subsequent dynasties that dominated the battlefields for several centuries in many countries.

After the fall of the last successor of the Macedonian lineage, the pika largely fell into disuse over the next 1,000 or so years. One exception may have been in Germany. Tacitus made a record of Germanic tribesmen in the 2nd century AD who used "too long spears".

He constantly refers to the spears used by the Germans, which were "large" and "very long". Presumably, he talks in essence about the peak. Caesar, in his Notes on the Gallic War, describes the Helvetii as fighting in a tight, phalanx-like formation with spears that protrude from behind their shields. Caesar was probably describing an early form of the "shield wall" formation popular in later times.

medieval revival

During the Middle Ages, the main formations using pikes were urban militias such as the Flemings or the peasants of the Scottish plains. For example, the Scots used the troop formation known as the "shiltron" in several battles during the Wars of Scottish Independence, including the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The Flemings also used their long spear "gelbon" to stop the attack of the French knights at the Battle of Courtrai in 1302, before other troops of the Flemish army counterattacked the stalled heavy cavalry. godendags.

Both battles were noted by contemporaries as an excellent example of the triumph of commoners over superbly equipped professional warriors. The victory was achieved through the skillful use of the pike and the brave resistance of the commoners who fought with it.

These formations were essentially invulnerable to attacks by mounted warriors, as long as the knights "obediently" threw themselves on the walls of the spears, and the foot soldiers remained strong in spirit under the constant pressure of the cavalry charge. However, the dense rank structure of the pikemen remained vulnerable to enemy archers and crossbowmen, who could fire on them with impunity, especially if they did not have specialized armor. Many defeats, such as at the Battle of Roosebeck and the Battle of Halidon Hill, were suffered by militia pike armies when faced with more prudent opponents who hired archers and crossbowmen to thin out the shirenges of blocking pikemen before they could be engaged by squads.

Medieval pike squads tended to be more successful when they acted in an aggressive manner. The Scots at the Battle of Stirling Bridge (1297), for example, used the momentum of their attack to crush an English army while the English were crossing a narrow bridge. At the Battle of Laupen (1339), the Bernese spearmen overwhelmed the infantry forces of the opposing Habsburg/Burgundian army with a massive blow that allowed the Austro-Burgundian horsemen to be routed. At the same time, such aggressive actions required considerable tactical cohesion or suitable terrain to be able to protect the vulnerable flanks of pike units, especially from mounted horsemen. When the support units could not properly cover the flanks, the pikemen often suffered serious losses, examples are the battles: the Battle of Mons-en-Pevel (1304), the battle of Castle (1328), the battle of Roosebeke and the battle of "Roosebeke" (1382) and the Battle of Ofa (1408). The continued success of the Swiss mercenaries in the later period is due to their clear discipline and tactical unity, due to their semi-professional nature, due to which the side protection of the allied units made it possible to somewhat mitigate the threat from flank attacks.

Often, units of pikemen using an aggressive manner of fighting were dismounted knights, as for example at the Battle of Sempach (1386), where the dismounted Austrian vanguard, using their spears as pikes, initially successfully fought against Swiss opponents armed with halberds. Dismounted Italian warriors also used a similar method to defeat the Swiss at the Battle of Arbedo (1422). Well-armed Scottish nobles (even aided by King James IV) were described as leading the Scottish pike parties at the Battle of Flodden, making the whole force resistant to English bows.

Rise of the Renaissance

The Swiss solved the initial problems of using the pike and brought the use of this weapon to the Renaissance in the 15th century, established clear regimes and procedures for training in pike use in order to provide the army with masters in the use of the so-called. "Spiess" (German term for "skewer") in maneuvers and in combat; they also introduced the march to drums for this purpose. This practice also meant that pike units could carry out serious attacking actions, in addition to defensive combat, which reduced passivity and added aggressiveness in battle. However, at the same time, the pikemen were well trained in defensive combat in case of a cavalry attack. The German soldiers, known as Landsknechts, later adopted the methods of using the pike from the Swiss. The Scots preferred to use shorter spears in their "shiltron" formation; their attempt to use the longer "continental" pike was reduced to a normally rare use after the weapon's ineffective use resulted in a humiliating defeat at the Battle of Flodden. The Swiss phalanxes of the Landsknechts also included soldiers armed with two-handed swords. zweihanders, and halberdiers, to more effectively repel infantry and cavalry attacks in close combat.

The Swiss faced the Landsknechts, who used similar tactics as the Swiss themselves, but with more pikes and in a more complex “deutschen Stoss” formation (the lance was held with two hands in the lower third of its length), which made it possible to organize a more flexible attack column.

The good military reputation of the Swiss pikemen and landsknechts led subsequently to the employment of these mercenary units in troops throughout Europe so that other armies could learn similar combat tactics. These types of units, as well as others that adopted similar tactics, were able to come together in combat in several wars, resulting in a series of unique events.

These formations had great successes on the battlefield, beginning with the brilliant victories of the Swiss cantons against Charles the Bold of Burgundy during the Burgundian Wars in which the Swiss fought in 1476 and 1477. In the battles of Grandson, Murten and Nancy, the Swiss not only successfully repulsed the attacks of enemy knights, since the Scottish and Flemish infantry units were relatively passive in combat, which was a characteristic feature of the early Middle Ages, but even went on the attack, with great zeal. Their attacks in columns fought through the Burgundian forces, sometimes causing great slaughter.

Pike attack columns remained the main form of effective infantry combat for the next forty years. The Swabian War was the first conflict in which both sides had large formations of well-trained pikemen. After that war, its belligerents, the Swiss (later, usually serving as mercenaries) and their "imitators" Landsknechts, often met during the Italian wars, which became in many ways the military testing ground of the Renaissance.

In Japan at that time, there was a parallel evolution of polearms. The Japanese style of warfare was, however, far more rapid and aggressive, using smaller formations, than similar European counterparts. The naginata and yari became common weapons for Japanese ashigaru foot soldiers (who used extremely long yari) who dismounted the samurai due to the greater reach of the weapon compared to the swords carried by the samurai. The naginata began to be used around 750 AD. This weapon had a curved, sword-like blade on a wooden pole, on the back of the spear, there was a metal counterweight, often with a point, for stabbing. The use of such a device caused a forced introduction for riders greaves because effective cavalry fighting was very important. The length of the yari spears varied. They had a straight blade, usually with sharpened blades, and sometimes with protrusions from the central blade, fixed in the recess of the shaft with a very long tang. In the region of the late half of the 16th century, pikemen, holding lances 4.5 - 6.5 meters long, sometimes even up to 10 meters, became the main forces of the armies. They formed lines, united with warriors armed with arquebuses and spearmen using shorter spears. The pikemen formed two or three lines of defense and raised and lowered their spears in accordance with incoming orders.

As a result, the development of firearms and artillery in the 16th century made large formations consisting entirely of pikemen vulnerable to fire, despite their amazing power in close combat. Significant losses in the fighting columns of pikemen were evident in the bloody battle of Biokka in 1522, where warriors armed with arquebus inflicted a heavy defeat on the forces of the Swiss pikemen.

Pike and small arms

In the post-Italian Wars period from the late 15th to late 16th centuries, most European armies switched to the use of pikes, often in combination with primitive firearms such as arquebuses. Large defensive detachments of pikemen were formed, behind which arrows could hide.

A typical example of such a development was the Spanish thirds (formations), which consisted of: a large formation of pikemen; small, mobile squadrons of arquebusiers moving along the perimeter; as well as traditional combatants. These three elements formed a mutually supportive combination of tactical roles: arquebus-armed warriors wore down the enemy line, pikemen protected arquebus-armed warriors from enemy cavalry attacks, and vigilantes, usually armed with swords and spears, attacked enemy units of pikemen, in the event that two such opposing formations entered in contact. The Tertii fielded fewer spearmen than the Swiss mercenary and Landsknecht columns, and their formations ultimately proved to be much more tactically flexible on the battlefield.

The percentage of warriors armed with firearms in tercio-like formations has steadily increased as technology in the manufacture of firearms has advanced greatly. This progress is believed to have been due to the decline of the cavalry, although it actually restored it. Although the cheaper and more versatile infantry was getting better at firearms, the proportion of cavalry in armies remained fairly high. In the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, smaller formations of pikemen were used to protect the musketeers, often as a center unit with two units of archers on either side, called "shot sleeves".

During this period, the length of the peak, as a rule, was from 4.5 to 5.5 m. However, there are sources that insist on slightly different sizes of the peak - from 3 to 4.5 meters.

End of the peak era

In the 17th century, improvements in the mobility of muskets, coupled with the invention of the bayonet, forced the obsolete pikes out of most European armies. In addition, improvements in the performance of artillery led to the abandonment of large military formations in most European armies. Priority was given to several attacking lines in a checkerboard pattern, in order to minimize the number of casualties and provide a larger front for salvo fire.

It turned out that solid bayonet barriers were an effective solution against cavalry, and the firepower of the musket was now so lethal that battles were often decided by riflemen alone. During the Napoleonic era, the spear spontoon, a kind of shortened pike with two appendages resembling wings spread out to the sides, was retained as a symbol by some officers. In practice, the use of such weapons was reduced more to gesticulation and signaling, rather than to the usual use.

In such an environment, spearmen developed a strong dislike for their own weapons. They were forced to stand and do nothing while the fighting continued around them. As the opposing musketeers fought like duels, the pikemen felt that they were mere targets, not soldiers, and that they had nothing to add to the battle raging around them. There are examples when pikemen threw their spears and took up the guns of their fallen comrades. This fact was a sign that the importance of the pike as a weapon on the battlefield was waning.

The approximate end date for the use of pikes in infantry formations can be considered 1700, although the armies of Prussia and Austria had already abandoned the use of pikes earlier. Other armies, such as the Swedish and Russian, continued to use this type of weapon for several decades after the end of the 17th century (the Swedes of King Charles XII, in particular, used the pike to great effect until the 1720s). During the American Revolution, pikes called "trench spears" made by local blacksmiths were still in limited use until the continental army and militia got enough bayonets.

Also in Poland, during the Kościuszko uprising in 1794, the pike was revived and became, within a short period, an amazingly effective weapon on the battlefield. In this case, General Tadeusz Kosciuszko was faced with a shortage of weapons and bayonets to arm the landless serfs, recruited as partisans straight from the wheat fields, who had only sickles and crude resemblances. combat braids. This military-grade agricultural equipment was then used in battle as a cutting weapon, as well as makeshift pikes. Peasant pikemen, armed with such crude tools, played a major role in achieving an almost impossible victory over the much larger and better equipped Russian army at the Battle of Racławice on April 4, 1794.

Civilian pikemen played a similar role, though to a lesser extent, in 1798, four years later, in Ireland. Here, especially at Wexford and during the Dublin uprising, the pike was useful mainly as a weapon for the men and women who fought as foot soldiers against cavalry armed with firearms.

Homemade lances made from bayonets impaled on poles were used by escaped criminals in the Castle Hill Rebellion of 1804.

Indeed, as early as the Napoleonic Wars, at the dawn of the 19th century, Russian militia foot soldiers (mostly landless peasants) could be armed with shortened pikes in battle. As the 19th century progressed, the obsolete pike still found use in countries such as Ireland, Russia, China and Australia, usually in the hands of desperate peasant rebels who had no access to firearms. John Brown planned to arm the rebel slave army in America mostly with lances.

One attempt to resurrect the pike as the primary weapon of the infantry occurred during the American Civil War, when the Confederate States of America planned to enlist twenty regiments of pikemen in 1862. In April 1862 it was decided that each Confederate infantry regiment would include two companies of lancers, a plan supported by Robert E. Lee. Many pikes were made, but they were not used in battle, as the plan to include pikemen in the army turned out to be unclaimed. Shorter versions of pikes called "boarding pikes" were also used on warships - usually to repel boarding attacks - until at least the third quarter of the 19th century.

The great Hawaiian warrior King Kamehameha I had an elite troop of warriors armed with very long spears, who supposedly fought in a manner identical to European pikemen, despite the usual concept of the general disposition of his men for individual duels as a method of close combat. It is not known whether Kamehamea I himself introduced this tactic, or whether it was adopted based on the use of traditional Hawaiian weapons.

The pike was issued as a British militia weapon in 1942 after war ministry responded to a letter from Winston Churchill saying that "every man should have some kind of weapon, it may be a mace or a pike." However, these handguns did not leave the stores after the pikes "produced an almost universal sense of anger and disgust at the Militia units, demoralized the men and led to questions pertaining to both Houses of Parliament". In some Spanish cities from the 18th century until around 1980, there were night guards called "serenos" who carried a short pike (approximately 1.5 m) called "chuzo".

Peaks are relevant today only for ceremonial purposes. They are used to carry the banners of the infantry, as well as an element of some honorary units. Some of the infantry units serving as protection for the President of the Italian Republic in the Quirinal Palace in Rome are also equipped with this type of weapon.
