How are wooden covers made?

Wooden smartphone cases are a new trend in the development of mobile accessories. The cases are made from unusual types of wood, which allows each product to be unique. Currently, there are many different models of wooden covers. Uniqueness in this case is achieved in various ways - applying various patterns, unusual combinations of different types of wood, using a variety of ornaments.

Production of covers using only valuable wood species. The base of the case is soft touch plastic, covered with a layer of wood. Before varnishing the covers, we carefully sand the covers with a sanding machine and also with very fine sandpaper. This is a long and very important process, which accounts for most of the master’s time. After sanding the covers, we varnish the covers with a hard glossy varnish. Thanks to the varnish, the texture of the wood appears more clearly, the case becomes more pleasant to the touch, and most importantly, its wear resistance from scratches and unfortunate falls increases. After all of the above, the image of your choice is engraved on the case.

Non-toxic wood species are used in the manufacture of these covers, and no chemicals are used in processing the material. This allows you to create a unique and practical item, the use of which will not cause any harm to the health of the person who purchased this case.

What kind of wood can the case be made from? The covers are made from three types of wood. - American walnut - Oak

All three types of wood are very durable and wear-resistant

American walnut has a characteristic gray-brown color and dark veining. Oak is perfect for white iPhones. Black Wenge wood with dark brown veins emphasizes the premium quality of your phone. A case made of Wenge wood is suitable for those who value minimalism.

Engraving on wenge is not very distinct, so we recommend this type of wood for those who want a case without engraving.

Nowadays, a lot of accessories have been invented for various gadgets. There are special keychains and pendants, cases and laces, not to mention stickers and decals. However, if we talk about cases, what are we used to? Moreover, they are made of leather, plastic or wool. However, as it turns out, you can use other materials too!

Of course, you can guess this yourself - after all, technology is moving forward, which means that not only leather cases can be seen here and there. But the designers propose something completely strange - making a case out of wood. Could any of us have come up with this idea? Probably, but not so many people even think about the fact that the case does not have to be made of soft materials. Be that as it may, here we see exactly the wooden cases invented for the now fashionable iPhone gadgets - they are made of hardwood and bamboo, and there are a variety of colors - from dark wood to very light. It is also worth saying that mobile cases are designed for several brands of phones - they will fit the iPhone Touch, iPhone Nano, and iPod Classic.

The cases look solid, beautiful and new, each has a personalized number, but another question arises - is it convenient to wear such a gadget? In theory, the case was invented so that the phone does not get scratched, if it falls, it does not break, and it is protected from dirt and dust. All these points apply to this project, but is it even convenient to keep the phone in such a case? As they say, you won't know until you try. Therefore, let us inform you that the price of the cover is $40.

My father recently purchased an iPhone 5s (now an outdated model), and I know for sure that he will never buy a case for it. Therefore, I figured out how to make a phone case with my own hands as a gift, so that his conscience would not allow him to refuse it.

Although I am making a wooden case for a 5s model phone, you can make a case for any iPhone by downloading the case parameters on the Internet (available with the parameters of the iPhone model range for those who develop applications and accessories for them). I didn't even have to pick up the phone itself to take measurements, so my gift was a real surprise. I only needed to adjust a few things myself when I first put the case on my smartphone, so I won't give any measurements - you can find them on the Internet.

Step 1: Tools and Materials

Tools:

  • 3D printer and laser cutter
  • measuring metal ruler
  • jigsaw
  • belt sander (optional, you can sand by hand)
  • drilling machine (if you can drill with pinpoint precision by hand, you can use a regular drill)
  • engraver with a set of attachments (diamond head, disk cutter, emery attachment, etc.)
  • various screwdrivers, hammers, sheets of sandpaper (from 120 to 400 grit)
  • sharp knife for removing excess glue

Materials

  • sheet of hard wood, the sheet area should be approximately 2-3 times larger than the surface area of the phone. I used a 3mm thick walnut sheet, but I think 2mm would work (but then you'd have to be very precise), as would 4mm (which would make the case bulky)
  • scraps of wood of greater thickness for the sides of the case, approximately equal to the thickness of the phone plus 1-2 mm
  • miniature screws and nuts, appearance to suit your taste
  • superglue, wood glue

Step 2: Making wood blanks

First, I made a cardboard phone template using the dimensions I found on the Internet. If you can make a template from a piece of wood a little thinner than the phone, that would be great. Observe the dimensions and check the angles so that you don’t have to redo everything later. Of course, if you're confident in your abilities, you can glue the parts right around the phone, but I wouldn't take that risk.

From a sheet of wood, cut two boards that are 1 cm larger than the dimensions of the phone. For now, you don’t have to adjust them to size. Mark the board you like best as the bottom cover of the case.
Then cut the sides (0.75cm wide) from thicker wood, making sure they are thicker (taller) than your phone. The difference should be small so that after further grinding there will be a gap of approximately 1 mm. Carefully glue them on the inside of the lid around the perimeter.

Before gluing the sides, make sure that the phone fits in the case, especially in height. To do this, place the phone inside the workpiece and cover it with a second plank on top; it should lie flat on the sides.

Step 3: Tighten the nuts

Attach the front panel (the board that is not the “lid”) to the workpiece with tape. Using a pencil, draw a rectangle on the board and carefully cut it out. Be careful not to cut off too much - there should be room for four screws in the corners of the case. For the sides, leave a gap of 4-6 mm, for the top and bottom parts - a little less, since we will screw in the screws on the sides.

Without removing the tape, drill four holes in the top cover and sides, with a diameter slightly smaller than the threads of the screws. Don't drill through! It is best to do this on a drilling machine with an indication of drilling depth. When drilling holes, always drill shallow first, then test the screw, and then drill deeper if necessary.

Countersink the holes so that the screw heads are flush with the surface of the lid. Be careful not to accidentally drill through the hole!

Step 4: Form the border of the front panel and cut a hole for the camera

Based on the parameters found on the Internet, I drew on the top cover the boundaries of the hole that is needed for the microphone, the return button, the screen, and the front camera.

Drill a hole inside the hole outline. Remove the jigsaw blade from the mount, thread it through the drilled hole, place the blade back into the mount and be sure to tighten it. Cut a hole along the marked outline. In the same way, make a hole for the flash and camera on the back cover of the case. While cutting the hole in the back cover, I cut through the top of the case, then just glued it back (pictured). It is not necessary to glue this piece back, since there is a power button underneath it, and the hole makes it easier to access. I decided to put the piece of wood back in place and make another button.

Sand the edges of the cut holes; using different engraver attachments you can make the cut angle completely square or, conversely, round it.

In the last photo you can see that I rounded the corners of the case (with a belt sander). This should only be done when the top cover is screwed into place, only then will the rounding contours of the covers match. It is not necessary to round the corners, but this shape follows the shape of the phone inside and visually makes the case much less bulky.

Sand the entire surface of the case first with 200 grit sandpaper, then 400 grit until it is completely smooth. I didn't use any finishing compound because I didn't have one. Perhaps I would use oil or some non-toxic composition, since the case will be in constant contact with my hands and face.

Step 5: Making holes in the side walls and buttons

You can make buttons out of whatever you want.
Using dimensional data from the Internet, I drilled holes in the bottom, top and side walls of the case - for the speaker, volume buttons, power button and silent mode button, for the microphone, for USB connectors and headphones.

Before you start drilling, be sure to insert a piece of wood into the body (in the first photo) to prevent the wood from splitting.

Once you've drilled the holes, you can get creative for the buttons.
Three buttons are quite simple - I ground off the height from the head of the bolt so that there was practically no hole left for a screwdriver, then I cut the threaded part to a suitable height with a disk cutter (you can also use a hacksaw for metal). Glue a small nut onto the cap with superglue. I didn’t glue a nut onto the volume up button because I wanted it to be different from the other two. Before you start gluing, try the case on the phone to make sure the holes line up with the buttons. The edges of the holes may need to be adjusted a bit to ensure they don't overlap the surface of the buttons and cause constant pressure on them.

The silent mode button was a little trickier to make - I needed to make a lever, so I made one from a piece of wood about the size of a match (pictured) with a small notch to grip the switch. I made another deeper notch and hole, and sanded the lever a little to adjust the size of the notch.

The lever needs support. For this I used a bent nail. It should go halfway through the thickness of the side wall. You need to somehow get smart and be able to drill holes, put a nail through them and put a lever on it along the way.

If this seems too tricky to you, you can simply cut a hole in the case so that you can easily press the button with your finger.

Step 6: Shutdown

Place the phone in the homemade case and tighten the screws.
If the phone dangles a little inside the case, place a folded piece of paper under the phone.
