What is an extension for an interior door? Types, sizes, installation. Extensions for interior doors: installation, dimensions, photos, prices What width are extensions for interior doors?

What are extras? Why are they needed when installing interior doors? What types of extensions are there by type of edge and method of fastening? How are extras installed? We will examine these and other questions in detail in this material.

We usually tell clients “If your wall thickness is more than 7 cm, then you will need extensions.” To independently determine whether your doorway needs extensions, you should measure the doorways correctly.

>>>

How to determine the number of extras?

Almost all door manufacturers sell extensions in standard widths - 100, 150 and 200 mm, and the door frame is almost always 70 mm wide. All this means that before installing the extensions, they need to be sawed lengthwise to give them the desired width.

For example, if your wall thickness is 90 mm, then it turns out that you will definitely need an additional 25 mm wide to the box. (about 5 mm is needed to insert the extension into the groove of the box) But extensions of this width are not sold, so we buy an extension 100 mm wide and saw off a 25 mm strip along each edge of the extension.

As a result, we will be left with another strip of extension (middle) 45 mm wide (5 mm was spent on cuts), which, theoretically, can also be used on the top of the box, but in practice this is not done, especially if the extensions have edged edges, i.e. e. the end of the extension has the same coating as the front part of the extension.

The extensions, without edgings, mainly have only veneered doors because... veneer (a thin slice of wood) is an inelastic, brittle material and it is impossible to bend it at a right angle without breaking it. Therefore, almost all veneered panels do not have an edge. Extensions with artificial coatings (Laminate, PVC, Eco-veneer, Laminate) have edged ends. In addition, like door frames or platbands, extensions can also be simple or telescopic.

Types of end additions

Let's return to our example with cutting the extensions with a wall thickness of 90 mm. For this case, you will need 1.5 sticks of extras. From one stick (board) of the extension we make two extensions, sawing it into pieces, and from 0.5 extension we also saw off a piece of the required width and place it on the top of the box.

As a result, it turns out that if our wall thickness is from 70 to 90 mm, then we will not need a full set of extensions (2.5 sticks), but 1.5 sticks with a width of 100 mm will be enough. If the wall thickness is from 90 to 165 mm, then you will need a complete set of extensions - 2.5 sticks with a width of 100 mm.

Table 1: Complete set of extensions for doorways for interior doors. The required number of extensions for each case of doorway wall thickness.

Standard width options

Wall thickness in mm 100 cm 150 cm 200 cm
from 70 to 90 1.5 - -
from 90 to 165 2.5 - 1.5
from 165 to 215 - 2.5 -
from 215 to 265 - - 2.5

Telescopic extensions and their features

As mentioned above, extensions come with and without edges. There is also a third type of edge: the end of the extension has a slot. These are telescopic extensions that are designed for installing telescopic platbands.

What features do telescopic extensions have? For example, if the thickness of the wall in the doorway is 800 mm, then there is an opportunity to save: buy doors with telescopic components, and you won’t have to buy additional parts because We will cover the missing 10 mm with a telescopic platband due to the fact that it can be pulled out of the frame groove by 5 mm on each side of the door frame.

Although telescopic moldings cost almost one and a half times more than simple ones, in our case we not only exclude the cost of additional parts, but also the cost of their installation. In addition, if the telescopic extension has to be sawed in half, then attaching it to the box will be more difficult, because you will have to prepare the box for collection, which will also entail additional costs.

Some manufacturers make the extensions one-sided, i.e. cutout for telescopic trim on one side only. When cutting the extension to the required width, this of course makes it easier to attach the extension to the box, but the downside is that such extensions will always have to be purchased in a complete set according to quantity, because They cannot be cut into two parts.

What if the walls are wide?

As a rule, a doorway in brick houses or in a load-bearing wall can be more than 300 mm thick. In this case, it is better to simpler and cheaper to decorate the doorway to match the wall (paste it with wallpaper or paint it) and not install extensions. The downside is that the unprotected corners of this opening risk rapid damage. Therefore, the extensions are installed throughout the entire opening and decorated with platbands on both sides. There are two ways to solve this problem:

1. Close the end of the doorway with solid panels. Many door manufacturers make wall panels or additional panels. Essentially these are the same extensions about a meter wide. In addition, you can order extensions of the required width, but only in multiples of 100 mm. As a last resort, you can buy wall panels from another manufacturer, selecting them by color.

2. Close the end of the doorway with joined panels. If, for example, the wall thickness is 30 cm, then you can take two sets of extensions 10 and 15 cm wide and join them, filing one of the sets in width. It is especially good to join telescopic extensions using a glazing bead.

Installation of accessories

The extras are installed when assembling the box. First, we assemble the box, and then we attach the extensions cut to the required width to the box using special mounting plates with short self-tapping screws. Thus, the extensions with the door frame become one. This entire structure is mounted in the doorway.

It is not recommended to install the door frame separately, and then the wide extensions separately, because securely fastening the extensions to the frame will be problematic. If you glue it or don’t attach it at all, then over time the panels may come away from the box, forming a gap. Separately, you can install extensions with a width of no more than 50 mm.

The door frame and the opening in the wall do not always match in size. In such a situation, correct installation of the doors is ensured by the use of an additional strip. Installing extensions on interior doors adds completeness to the design of the structure and protects the wall opening from mechanical influences.

The need to install additional elements

What is an extension for an interior door? This is a special horizontal or vertical strip (extender) that covers the end wall of the doorway between the platband and the frame (tray). Door structures are produced in standard sizes, which sometimes do not correspond to the thickness of the walls in private houses and apartments.

Additional elements perform two main functions:

  1. Aesthetic - they cover defects on slopes and add beauty to the door structure.
  2. Protective - strengthen the door frame, preventing it from loosening and distortion during frequent use.

Raw materials for making accessories

Taking into account the material, color, texture, texture and other characteristics of the door leaf and frame, an additional panel is selected. It is recommended to purchase expanders at the same time as the door and from the same manufacturer. The raw materials for their production are:

  • array of coniferous trees;
  • Chipboard, fibreboard, MDF;
  • plastic.

Panels made of any material are covered with a top decorative layer. Finish options:

  • natural veneer;
  • lamination (coating of paper impregnated with melamine resins);
  • films made of polymers (PVC, eco-veneer and others);
  • varnish coating (for wood);
  • painting.

Lightweight and durable extensions are made from thin MDF sheets mounted on a wooden frame and with a cellular internal filling. It is possible to make expansion panels for interior doors with your own hands. The difficulty will be choosing the shade and texture of the panel coating. Such extensions for interior doors look original if they have a contrasting color, have a different texture from the entire structure, or are decorated with decorative carvings.

Types of additional strips

  1. Standard straight retractors are available with or without a protective edge. Ordinary flat panels that are attached to the wall with nails or glue. It is recommended to use planks with an edge, since a butt-mounted platband may not hide the entire thickness of the material and worsen the appearance of the passage. The convenience lies in the fact that such an extension for an interior door can be adjusted in width on site during installation.
  2. Telescopic extensions for interior doors are distinguished by the presence of longitudinal grooves on both sides, which ensure tight, reliable adhesion to the platband and door frame of a similar configuration without additional fasteners using the “tenon-to-groove” principle. The width of the expander is adjusted by extending the bar from the slot by 2-7 mm. Unlike straight ones, telescopic slats are easier to install and look more attractive.

Dimensions of extensions for interior doors

The dimensions of the additional strips are determined by the size of the door openings. In height they are produced in the range of 206-220 cm. Thickness depends on the material of manufacture and ranges from 5 mm to 40 mm. In width you can find extenders from 50 mm to 56 cm. For opening depths of more than 20 cm, experienced designers recommend decorating the door with slopes. Such extensions for interior doors that are wider than 15 cm are not in demand and are usually made to order from the buyer.

The net width of the panel is determined by measuring the depth of the doorway and subtracting the width of the frame from this number. It is extremely rare that there is a need to install a door in the middle of the jamb. In such a situation, the result obtained is divided in half, and expansion strips are fixed on both sides of the box.

Methods for installing accessories and preparatory work

It is more convenient and easier to install expansion strips simultaneously with the door structure. Extensions are installed in two ways:

  1. Having conveniently positioned the door frame in an open space, resting against a wall or horizontally, the expansion panels are fastened to the frame and installed in the opening as a solid structure. If there are no grooves, the parts are connected with glue, screws or bolts. The geometric correctness of the angles is checked using diagonals or a level. Then the gaps between the extensions and the wall are foamed.
  2. The door frame is installed. After the foam has dried, the extensions are attached to it.

When installing expansion panels, it is important that all connecting surfaces are clean. Before installing the extensions on the interior door, excess foam is cut off on the fixed frame, the grooves and parts are cleaned of dust and other contaminants. This measure will prevent the door structure from skewing. To fix the expanders, it is recommended to use polyurethane foam with low drying pressure.

Installation of simple additional strips with self-tapping screws

Standard straight extensions are installed simultaneously with the door or after its installation in the following sequence:

  • The width of the horizontal panel is determined, and if there is excess, it is cut off.
  • The plank is tried on again and, if all dimensions match, it is fixed with self-tapping screws.
  • The side parts are adjusted and screwed to the wall in the same way.
  • All joints are sealed. Platbands are put on.

The screw caps are closed with furniture plugs (self-adhesive or plastic) in the color of the facing material.

Features of installing telescopic extensions

Installation of telescopic panels is easier and faster. The wall and installed tray are pre-cleaned. The planks are tried on and the excess length is cut off. The upper horizontal element is mounted first, then the sidewalls. Extensions of this type are inserted into the grooves of the door frame to the required depth. That is, until the panel covers the entire open surface of the wall. For a strong connection, the end of the expander is tapped with a rubber mallet. The panel is attached to the wall with liquid nails. A level is used to check the evenness of surfaces and install platbands.

Design of portals

Today, more and more often, designers propose combining different living spaces with original portals. Openings without doors expand the space and create a special microclimate in the house. The design of passages in a single stylistic solution with the rooms favorably emphasizes the unique design. Standard rectangular doorways are decorated with extensions for interior doors and trims.

In a country house, portals form the passages to the terrace or to a room with a fireplace. The apartments have original looking portals that open onto an insulated loggia or combine the kitchen space with the living room.

Some recommendations will help you implement the correct installation of interior doors with your own hands:

  • Straight extensions are attached to a perfectly flat wall with liquid nails. The surface is degreased, the adhesive is applied pointwise, the panel is pressed and gently tapped with a rubber hammer.
  • For any installation method, it is recommended to immediately put on the trims, as they level the extensions and are additionally fixed with foam.
  • When there is significant curvature of the walls or a wide installation gap, backing bars are used.
  • When the door is opened 180°, the expanders are installed on the side opposite the hinges.
  • An electric jigsaw is used to cut additional panels.
  • Small cracks are filled with wood putty to match the facing material.
  • For installation, black or hardened screws are used.
  • Do-it-yourself installation of interior doors will be easier if a wooden plank is attached to unplastered slopes.
  • When adjusting the dimensions at the installation site, the parts are applied to the wall with the back side and notes are made with a pencil. The cut strip is again tried on in its place and only after that is fixed. Vertical panels may vary in size!
  • The horizontal expansion bar is leveled using wedges.
  • Spacer bars installed in several places (for example, made of foam plastic) will help to avoid distortion of the panels when the foam dries.

Additional strips enhance the doorway, logically completing its decoration. It is quite possible to decorate the wall yourself, since the long and labor-intensive process of installing expanders does not require special skills or the use of complex equipment.

Sections of the article:

Door extensions are special vertical and horizontal panels that are installed in doorways in cases where the width of the door frame does not match the width of the wall. What is it and what functions do these products perform? In another way, additional panels are called additional boards (or planks, slats). They perform an important aesthetic function, since with their help you can easily close defects in slopes, and can even strengthen the structure of the opening itself.

The choice of door trims should be made taking into account the material, size and design of the doors. Also, when choosing such products, pay attention to the width of the groove of the box (the thickness of the additional strips should not be greater than the width of the groove). If the box does not have a groove, then you can choose planks of absolutely any thickness.
Advice: experts recommend choosing a box with a groove, since in this case the extensions will be attached more firmly.

Materials and design features

Like the door itself, the slats are an important element of interior design, as they cover the excess part of the wall, and give the door itself a finished look. Be sure to select these planks so that they are in harmony with the entire interior design of the room. Additional elements for entrance or interior doors can be made of fiberboard, solid wood, MDF and other materials. The finishing can be natural or artificial veneer, glass, plastic, or laminated film.
Typically, such products are produced two meters high, but if the doorway has a non-standard design, then the planks must be made individually.

When does it become necessary to install extensions?

Not all houses have walls of standard thickness. Therefore, sometimes the thickness of walls in country or private houses can reach several tens of centimeters, which is incomparable with thin apartment interior partitions. Therefore, when installing doors, the extra centimeters of the wall that were not covered by the door frame can be sealed in the following ways:

  • Paint;
  • Cover with matching wallpaper;
  • Plaster with a decorative type of plaster;
  • Close with slats.

The additional strip for doors must be selected so that its dimensions and texture fully correspond to the design and structural features of the door frame. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase the extensions together with the doors. But if this is not possible, then you can make them yourself from ordinary wooden boards of the required thickness and color. If it is not possible to match the exact tone of the door, then the planks can be painted in the desired color.

Installation subtleties

Usually the strips are attached to only one side of the doorway, but there are cases when they can be installed on both sides. This way the door frame itself can be expanded. First of all, the vertical strips are installed, and then the horizontal strips are installed. The platbands are fixed after the installation of the extensions is completed. If uneven walls are found, the extensions must be cut out.

The width of the board is chosen taking into account the fact that the addition + door frame have a total thickness that will not be less than the thickness of the wall.

You can see the detailed process of how door trim is installed in the photo. The first step is to install the door frame with one edge flush with the wall. After attaching the door frame to the wall, which is done using frame dowels, corners and other fasteners, you can proceed to the next step.

We measure the width of the wall (from the edge of the additional groove to the edge of the wall). Next, cut the board to the required width using an electric jigsaw. The height of the strip should be no greater than the height of the door frame. It is necessary to prepare a couple of boards for the left and right vertical parts. After installing the strips, you can install the door leaf itself, and fill the remaining gaps with foam.

Cutting and installation of the platband is the final stage of work. The additional board intended for the installation of interior doors must strictly comply with their design, otherwise the harmony will be disrupted. Therefore, when choosing doors for your private or country house, do not forget to purchase all the necessary additional elements for them.

Installation of extensions on door frames in panel houses

Sometimes in panel-type houses the wall openings have a trapezoidal cross-section, so on the two sides of the slope the difference can be up to 80 mm. In such a situation, the door frame will be attached in the narrow part, and the wide part of the opening will be closed with the help of extensions on the door. From a technical point of view, sealing the gap with polyurethane foam will be incorrect, and if considered from the material side, it will even be unprofitable. Therefore, there are two ways out of this situation.

The back side of the vertical plank is covered with bars 30 to 40 cm long. It is not recommended to use a solid bar, as it will deform over time. It is necessary to select the cross-section of the bars so that the distance from the wall to the installed extensions is 10 mm. After this, the products will be inserted into the groove of the box, and if a gap is formed, it must be filled with foam.

Types of extras.

The second method is to arrange a frame structure in the opening. Using self-tapping screws, the planks are attached to the slopes, and the space that remains is filled with polyurethane foam. When the foam is completely dry, the vertical elements of the door extensions are glued to the frame. The horizontal strip is simply laid on the vertical elements.

The installation of telescopic strips is considered very simple, the installation of which does not even require glue or screws, because the fastening is carried out using grooves. This makes it possible to use planks in openings even with large irregularities or defects. Many people have a question: how many extensions do you need for an entrance or interior door? As a standard, 1 door requires 2.5 pieces (two vertical strips and one horizontal strip of shorter length).

How is the required thickness of the extensions determined?

With a wall thickness of 90 mm and a frame width of 70 mm, it is necessary to add 25 mm of extra space (90-70 = 20 and another 5 mm must be added to insert the strip into the groove of the door frame). It will be difficult to find an extension of this size, so it will have to be cut from a 100 mm wide plank. To do this, cut off a strip of the required width (25 mm) along each edge. The remainder can also be used in the future for the top plank, but if the plank has an edged edge, then in practice this is rarely done.

If the board does not have an edge, then in most cases it is veneer, which is a fragile and not very elastic material, so it cannot be broken. Nor bend it at the right angle. And products made from laminate, eco-veneer or PVC will have edged ends.

Selection rules

In Russia, the standard door frame dimensions are 2000 mm, and in European countries - 2100 mm. After measuring the width of the wall, you need to subtract the width of the door frame from it. The resulting value will be the width of the door trims that need to be made or purchased.

You can purchase extensions for doors measuring 100, 150 or even 200 mm.

Whatever accessories you choose for your doors, remember that it is better to consult with specialists once again than to redo it twice later. Therefore, ask the questions that interest you to the specialists from whom you order the door and its accessories.

Sizing

In most cases, planks with a thickness of 10-16 mm and a width of 90, 120 or 150 mm are used to create slopes. In such a situation, it is advisable to use a 100 mm extension. Even a section of successive planks will look neat after adjustment. A wider additional board is used to arrange the door frame of the front door.

If the door fitting is not included in the door kit and you have doubts about how to measure correctly, then it is better to call a professional measurer and entrust the installation process to the hands of professionals. When ordering or making door trims, you must first calculate their dimensions. If you decide to test your strength and install the slats yourself, then when calculating the dimensions, subtract the width of the box from the wall thickness and add a couple more centimeters to this value in order to prevent the possibility of error.

Any door, entrance or interior, should look organic. Agree that a motley doorway does not look very nice - when the canvas has a wood tone, and the slopes vaguely resemble the pattern of a wall or a white ceiling.

If earlier the opening slopes were destined to be only plastered, painted or covered with wallpaper, then the modern market offers a new solution to the problem - door trims. What it is? - some ordinary people will ask.

With the advent of door extensions, the interior or entrance opening began to look richer and more beautiful.

Let's study this concept to know how to choose the right door and additional decors so that the opening has a logically complete look.

The word “dobor” itself already indicates that you need to get something. In our case, the door frame, which most often has a standard width of 75 mm, will be used. But the walls of each house or apartment may differ from the prescribed dimensions and dictate their own rules for choosing an entrance door or an interior door.

Walls are constructed from different materials: brick, blocks, logs, frame construction. Not only the external walls of the building, but also internal partitions can be made from this material. Therefore, a certain width of the doorway may remain unaffected by the frame. It is unlikely that it will be possible to install platbands to match the main canvas, because the result will not be very good. This is where door (or frame) extensions come to the rescue.

Door extensions allow you to close the wall of the opening to match the door block.

By purchasing planks of the appropriate size and color, you will create a beautiful door portal that will look much better and richer. Even cheap doors are transformed by installing door trims.

By the way, you can decorate a doorway beautifully. But this is suitable if there is no door at all.

What types of door extensions are there?

This is the second question that arises in the head of a person who has become acquainted with the concept of door extensions. Because you need to know their classification if door decors are purchased separately, after installing the interior structure.

In terms of size, all door elements are mainly divided by width. Standard planks are from 50 to 560 mm. The length of the strips is produced in parameters of 2100 or 2200.

Select the additional board according to the size of the doorway.

The thickness of the leaf is equal to the size of the groove, which is cut out at the end of the door frame and corresponds to 10 mm. If your opening does not correspond to the presented dimensions, then with a smaller width the extensions can be cut, but with a larger width the strips must be ordered from the manufacturer of interior doors.

Based on the material used, door panels from the manufacturer are made from the same material as the door block:

  • solid wood of different types;
  • MDF;
  • laminate;
  • Fiberboard.

Any detail is tinted in a specific color or covered with PVC film, imitating various shades. It is best to select door decors together with the purchase of a new door to avoid problems with matching the shade or texture.

You can make extensions with your own hands from any available material:

    • plywood;
    • board;
  • remnants of plastic panels.

This is a more profitable solution for non-standard openings, when there are problems with the curvature of the walls, their large thickness, or the doors are made by hand. In other situations, it is easier, cheaper and more reliable to buy ready-made door panels. Many manufacturers make them complete with the main product.

Based on the method of installing the extensions, it cannot be said that they are all the same. This is mainly due to the door frame, which was purchased complete with the door leaf. Not all frame strips are equipped with a groove that allows for the installation of a door addition. Therefore, the strips can be installed in a groove or without it. The installation technique is slightly different, but we will talk about this later.

In terms of color, the choice of planks is as wide as the choice of interior doors.

Door trims are selected in color and texture in accordance with the frame and leaf.

Each door decor must match the set so that the opening looks harmonious. Even a small difference in color will catch the eye in good lighting. In the photo you can see perfectly selected door panels, allowing you to create a single portal that fits well into the interior of the space.

When choosing an extension for a metal entrance door or interior block, there are no particular differences.

For the front door, you can choose panels made of MDF or solid wood.

A small nuance lies in their installation, because the metal box does not have a groove for decorative strips. Only connecting elements are suitable here.

In terms of price, the extras also differ. This is due to the material and size of the plank. But you shouldn't save money when purchasing. If solid wood doors are chosen for a house or apartment, then you should not buy laminate doors. Such savings will spoil the impression of the entire interior. Be sure to choose all the finishing elements for the interior opening from the same material and preferably from the same batch.

Choosing the right door panels without headaches

If you have started a renovation or simply decided to install or update doors, do not rush to run to the store. The choice should always be thoughtful and balanced.

First, measure the entrance or interior doorway (depending on where you choose the door). For wall thicknesses up to 80 mm, it is enough to purchase a door frame and leaf. If the size is larger, even 50 mm, you need to think about buying door extensions.

If additional wall decor is needed, measurements should be taken correctly. Walls rarely have the correct dimensions and proportions. We take measurements in horizontal and vertical planes, taking into account the characteristics of the door frame (with a groove, without a groove, because 1 cm plays a big role when installing extensions). We determine the required width of the extension by taking measurements at three or four points on the right, left, and upper parts of the opening. It is better to take the planks with a small margin; in the future, it is easier to remove the excess than to increase the missing millimeters.

If you plan to install the accessories yourself, buy spare parts so that if one element gets damaged, you don’t have to return to the store. When choosing the services of a specialist, it is enough to trust the experience of a specialist.

We recommend purchasing the accessories at the same time as the door block. If repairs are being carried out and you decide to update the old door and replace the old slopes with new additions, then you will have to approach the search for door frame additions responsibly.

Different ways to install certain types of extensions

Basically, the installation of door panels depends on the type of frame initially selected. It determines how quickly and simply the installation will be done.

    • If there is a groove in the end part of the vertical and horizontal beams, pre-provided by the manufacturer, it is necessary to adjust the extension to the size of the wall of the opening not affected by the frame. Install three planks in the groove, first applying glue or securing with foam (this depends on the gap that appears between the wall and the extension).
  • If there is no groove, you need to make it yourself using a router or use another method of installing the extension based on the characteristics of the walls.

We described more complete information on this in one of our articles. Let's just say a few words that installation in any way, taken as a basis for independent execution, does not require special skills.

You can do the installation of door panels yourself by choosing the right method.

We just don’t forget that the planks must be perfectly level, so that in the future it is easy to install platbands for a complete set and a finished look of the door portal. When cutting off the excess width of the strip, do not forget that the groove for installing the platband should not be damaged. If you neglect this point, you will have to change the bar or find a way to firmly adhere the platband to the entire structure. Look at the photos of the extensions, complemented by door frames.

The door portal will look richer and better if you select and install extensions and trims.

When doing renovations or thinking about how to give new life to an old door, do not forget about the little details that give the portal and interior a complete look. Having studied the information about door extensions and what they are, you are closer to creating the ideal interior with your own hands.

If you decide to install doors in your apartment or office, in 80% of cases you will need to install extensions on interior doors.

Why do you need an extension when installing a door?

Additions are vertical flat panels made in the color of the door, and allow you to “adjust” the thickness of the doorway and secure the trim on the other side of the wall. There are additional benefits:

  • Ordinary ones, i.e. flat panels
  • Telescopic, having grooves at the end for a platband with a tenon

Additional door elements are most often made from: MDF, fiberboard or coniferous wood and are flat panels about 1 cm thick and approximately 207 cm high.

The standard width of extensions are usually 100, 120, 150 and 200 mm wide. It is better to buy them together with interior doors so that all elements are made in the same color.

Installation of accessories must be calculated in advance

If installation of extensions on interior doors is required, the price for the work is calculated separately. Therefore, when measuring the openings, it is necessary to immediately calculate the number of additional trims and inform the master how many doors require installation of extensions.

First of all, you need to measure the thickness of the walls in the openings, and understand how much thicker the wall in the opening is than the frame of the interior door. If the extension is ordinary and the wall thickness is more than 7-7.5 cm, the extension is needed in any case

For example, if the wall of the doorway is 10cm thick. — we make the following calculation: 10-7+1=4cm. In total, you need three such elements for one door: two vertical and one horizontal. In the store we order one additional element 15 cm wide, the master cuts it into 3 parts of 4 cm each and installs the additional elements.

Installation of the door panel is necessary:

  • during installation, if the wall thickness is greater than the door frame thickness:
  • during installation, for a beautiful finish on distorted slopes:

  • when finishing a doorway into a portal, without a door leaf
  • when finishing a doorway into a portal with the installation of a sliding door

All of the above work is performed by our craftsmen; the cost of installing interior doors with extensions can be found in. When ordering finishing of the entrance door slopes, you can order additional panels with color selection from us.

Installation of doors with extensions if the wall is 1 cm thicker than the frame.

You need to make extensions 2 cm wide, 1 cm will go into the grooves and 1 cm will remain. It is necessary to attach platbands to this narrow extension. In order to save material, it is allowed to saw the extensions along at least 1.5 cm. in width.

If the walls are blocked vertically or the doorway has different wall thicknesses at the top and bottom, then the extensions have to be made trapezoidal. For example, the bottom extension can be 3 cm wide, and 2 cm wide on top. Not very beautiful, is it? Therefore, in this case, telescopic extensions with extended platbands look more aesthetically pleasing.

Installing extensions on a thick wall

If the wall is very thick (from 20 cm and above), the panels are spliced together using furniture clips, glue, hardboard strips and thin pine blocks.

Here is a photo of an interior door with wide slopes on a thick wall:

Installation of telescopic extensions on interior doors

Installing telescopic extensions on interior doors is not quite the same as installing regular ones. Such a panel has longitudinal grooves up to 2 cm deep at the ends for installation. The advantage of telescopic molding is that fasteners (pins or nails) are not visible, and it is possible to easily dismantle the platbands. Telescopic extensions do not need to be wedged during installation, since they just need to be inserted into narrow grooves in the box.

Here is an approximate calculation if the tenon on the platband is 2 cm wide:

  • If the extension is telescopic and the wall thickness is more than 10cm. , and the door does not need to be opened 180 degrees - additional extensions are needed
  • If the extension is telescopic and the wall thickness is more than 8.5 cm, and the door needs to be opened 180 degrees, extensions are needed

If the tenon on the platband has a smaller width, then the above calculations need to be reconsidered.

As you can see, installing an extension with a platband on a telescopic system has its own characteristics due to the presence of a groove in the extension and a tenon on the platbands.

For example, when installing conventional panels 4 cm wide, you can order one panel 15 cm wide and “dissolve” it into 3 strips. But when installing telescopic extensions, this will no longer be possible - you will have to order 2 elements of 10 cm each. wide due to the presence of two grooves for platbands at the ends. If the additional board has only one groove at the end, and has a tenon on the other side, then you will have to order 2.5 additional 10cm pieces for 1 door. width.

The width of telescopic additional strips is calculated based on the fact that the platbands can extend from the extensions to the width of the tenon. You also need to take into account the length of the tenon going into the extension and you will understand what width is required.

The disadvantage of the telescopic system is that the extensions cannot be cut into narrow strips due to the groove for the platband. This is especially noticeable with a wall thickness of 9 to 11 cm, because The cutting line passes through the groove and therefore the extension falls apart into 2 parts. Therefore, we have to abandon the additions, place the door frame not flush with the wall, but in the middle, thereby deepening the door leaf, which limits the door opening to 180 degrees, because The door begins to pull out the hinges.

When installing telescopic extensions on portals (openings without doors decorated with platbands and extensions), approximately the same situation almost always arises. The wall has a thickness of, for example, 13 cm, and the extension has a standard width of 15 cm. and grooves on both sides. Therefore, it is necessary to saw it lengthwise, cut off the tenons from the platbands and nail the platbands to the cut edge of the trim with pins or nails.

Extensions between the front door and the second wooden door

To enhance sound insulation, the entrance and wooden doors are installed side by side, leaving free space between them, which is best decorated with extensions. This type of work is considered very labor-intensive due to the difficulties with foaming the extensions and subsequent smooth joining with both doors at the same time.

requires a certain amount of experience from the master. It is necessary to outline and cut all the planks, taking measurements using a ruler with the door frame installed. It is important that the gaps between the frame and the extensions are minimal, and to do this they need to be properly wedged around the entire perimeter of the door frame or secured with self-tapping screws.
