Matte paint on glass. DIY stained glass paints. What can you paint with stained glass paints?

In what cases does glass need painting? What dyes can be found on sale? How to use them correctly to create complex multi-color compositions? Can you make your own glass paint?

Let's figure it out.

Why is this necessary?

Key words - stained glass painting. Painting allows you to create complex color compositions, diversify the appearance of furniture and limit the transparency of glass where it is undesirable (for example, in the case of skylights in bathrooms or transparent inserts in bathroom doors). At the same time, glass retains its main function - permeability (albeit partial) to light.

Let us clarify: traditional stained glass is a composition of glass painted with mineral dyes at the production stage.
They are combined into a composition with flexible lead tape.
Stained glass painting is the creation of multi-color or single-color designs on solid glass or ceramics.

General concepts

Paints can be divided into two main categories based on their method of application.

  1. Burnt. After application and drying, they undergo heat treatment. At home, an oven can be used for this purpose (of course, with a small stained glass area); The firing process takes from an hour to an hour and a half at a temperature of about 150 degrees.
Fired paints are, on average, noticeably stronger than alternative solutions; in particular, painted glass can be washed using any household chemicals, except abrasives.
  2. Non-fired paints simply dry at room temperature. In some cases, an additional coating may be used for fixation - a durable transparent varnish.

There are also two ways to apply paint.

  1. Aerosol formulations are applied through a stencil. Using several stencils, you can create multi-color compositions. This painting method is simple and does not require much time; however, it does not allow stained glass to be made in any way complex.
  2. A more complex solution is to transfer the relief contour of the image onto the glass using a special contour paste. Then the areas closed by the contour are filled with a coloring composition and dried in a horizontal position. The source of contours can be both photographs and paintings processed in graphic editors, and... children's coloring books, in which a multicolor image is formed in a very similar way.

Types of paints

Acrylic

Acrylic paints for glass are an aqueous dispersion of acrylic resin with the addition of pigments and special polymers that improve adhesion to a smooth surface. Thanks to their water base, they are odorless and dry quickly. The thick consistency allows them to be applied to curved surfaces or used in cases where dismantling glass (for example, standing in an already installed double-glazed window) is undesirable.

Note: acrylic paints cannot be thinned.
Too much water will cause the dye to bead up on a horizontal surface and flow down an inclined or vertical surface.

All fired paints are water-based. It is worth clarifying: we are talking about dyes that can be used at home. For industrial painting, powder mixtures of fusible glass with temperature-resistant mineral pigments are used; firing takes place at a temperature of about 800 degrees.

The photo shows acrylic-based paint.

Solvent

The base is petroleum solvent. White spirit can be used to dilute the dye.

How do these paints differ in terms of practical application?

  • Drying takes from several hours to two to three days.
  • All work, willy-nilly, has to be carried out under a hood or with open windows. Solvent and white spirit are toxic; in addition, their vapors are explosive in a certain concentration.
  • Paint can only be applied to a horizontal surface.
  • The addition of a solvent allows you to vary the color saturation: depending on its percentage in the paint, an area of painted glass can be made almost transparent or completely impenetrable to light.

Useful: to avoid confusion, it is worth clarifying that not a single stained glass paint is intended for fiberglass, plexiglass and plastics of any kind.
For these materials, polyurethane and epoxy based dyes are used.

Depending on the pigments and fillers used, different textures and appearances of the painted surface can be obtained. Thanks to their combination, stained glass windows imitate frost are born; relief images; Vintage glass paints imitate an old coating that has cracked with time.

In this case, the paint base is an oil solvent.

Painting lessons

Is it difficult to create a multi-color image on glass yourself? Let's learn methods for drawing the outline of a stained glass window and coloring it.

Image

We have already discussed where to get the sketch.

However, we have not touched on an equally important topic: what should be the image that we are going to transfer to glass?

  • It should not contain open contours. The instructions are related to the method of applying paints: multi-colored areas not delimited by contour paste will mix with each other. The exception is those cases when the strokes applied with a contrasting outline represent an independent element of the image.
  • The sketch should not contain too small elements or too closely spaced lines. The outline drawn with paste is noticeably thicker than the pencil line.

Glass

Before painting, the base must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased.

  1. Everything can be washed with regular dishwashing detergent or glass cleaner.
  2. Then the remaining dirt and grease are removed with alcohol or acetone.

In order to transfer the sketch to the surface to be painted, we will have to assemble a simple design for copying: the image is placed on a horizontal surface on top of thick fabric and covered with glass. For additional fixation, which will help avoid accidental displacement, you can use pieces of tape.

Circuit

Further work is carried out strictly wearing medical gloves. Even a small amount of sebaceous gland secretions can affect paint adhesion.

The contour is drawn along the sketch lines at moderate-high speed. Trying to draw lines too slowly will cause them to end up uneven due to the inevitable hand tremors. Erroneously applied strokes are cleaned up after the contour paste has dried slightly, using a razor blade or a cotton swab moistened with alcohol.

Coloring

Thick acrylic paints are applied with a fine art brush. More liquid solvent ones will fill the space allocated for them on their own: just drop a few drops into the center of the area limited by the contour.

Making your own paints

Stained glass paints and contour pastes are not sold everywhere, and not everyone will like their price. Fortunately, you can prepare everything you need for painting yourself at a much lower cost.

Circuit

The contour paste is prepared literally on the knee from PVA glue, black ink and aluminum powder.

Its source can be two-component silver paint.

  1. 50 milliliters of PVA are mixed with 30 milliliters of black ink.
  2. Aluminum powder is gradually poured into the resulting mixture until the contour reaches the consistency of medium-thick sour cream.

Is it difficult to make paints? What can serve as a basis for them?

Nitrolac

  1. We take about 100 milliliters of nitro varnish NTs-218, NTs-222 or NTs-2141.
  2. Add 40 milliliters of solvent No. 647 to it.
  3. Add 10-15 grams of oil paint for artwork to the resulting composition and mix thoroughly.
  4. Mix glue and acetone in equal proportions.
  5. Add paste from the refill of a ballpoint pen of a suitable color until the desired saturation is obtained.

BF-2

Gelatin

  1. We dilute 6 grams of edible gelatin in a glass of warm water.
  2. In a separate bowl, dilute dye for cotton fabric.
  3. Gradually add liquid dye to the gelatin base.

Please note: this composition is the most harmless; however, it is not resistant to water.
To protect the stained glass window you created, you will have to cover it with a layer of colorless nitro varnish.

Styrofoam

  1. Pour acetone into a tall glass or laboratory glassware with a narrow neck. A narrow neck will limit the rate of evaporation of the volatile solvent.
  2. Gradually add crushed polystyrene foam to it, stirring the solution with a thin stick or a piece of wire. The desired consistency will be achieved when the solution forms a film quickly flowing off the surface of the stick removed from the dish.

  1. We paint the resulting polystyrene varnish with oil paint for artistic work.

Conclusion

We hope that the proposed solutions will be useful to the reader. The video in this article will provide an opportunity to become more familiar with the technology of glass coloring and the materials used. Success in creative work!

In fact, glass paints are very diverse, not only in color, but also in composition, consistency and texture.

There are three main groups:

  • Water based paints. Most often acrylic, they are distinguished by their lack of odor, liquid consistency, transparency and environmental friendliness. If necessary, they can be easily washed off with water until they dry out. These paints are used for creativity with children. Using such paints on glass, stained glass becomes transparent and is well suited for windows.

All water-based paints are subject to “firing” after drying. The completely dried product is “baked” in the oven for a certain time and at the required temperature. Instructions for the “firing” time and temperature are indicated on the packaging.

  • Organic solvent paints. These are paints with a thick consistency and a strong, pungent odor. They are usually made on a varnish base, so there is no need to “fire” the finished product. They dry for several days and after that, they can be easily washed. In case of frequent washing and cleaning, it is better to coat the glass with stained glass on top with a strengthening varnish.

If it is necessary to dilute such paints, you need to use only a solvent from the same company as them. Other thinners will ruin the paints, so the thinner is sold along with the paints.

  • Acrylic stained glass paints. They are used most often, they are odorless, dry quickly and produce bright, rich colors. Such paints easily mix with each other, giving new shades. If a more delicate shade is needed, the paint is diluted using a special thinner used for artistic paints.

Acrylic paints do not require “firing”, but for better wear resistance, you can additionally coat the product with acrylic varnish. These paints are not afraid of moisture and washing, they do not fade from sunlight and are not afraid of temperature changes. When painting stained glass on glass with your own hands, acrylic paints are the best choice for beginners.

Important! Any paints should not be used on dishes that come into contact with food. For example, when painting a mug, the design is applied from the outside.

Glass paints with special effects

Novice creators use ordinary stained glass paints for painting on glass, without any effects or decorative inserts. But stained glass painting professionals use a greater variety of colors and decorative ideas.

Let's look at the most popular stained glass paints:

  • Sticky. These are paints, most often acrylic, that when dry form a thin film that can be removed from the base and glued to any surface.
  • Silicate paints. These are the most common paints, intended for “firing” and after that they become either transparent or matte.
  • Chandelier paints. When applied to glass, such paints have a metallic sheen, depending on the metal included in its composition.
  • Volumetric or foaming paints. When “firing”, such paint peels off a little from the surface and a corrugated and three-dimensional pattern is obtained.
  • Icy or granular paints. When “baked”, the granules applied to the surface with a special glue spread and a “bumpy” picture is obtained.
  • Pearlescent transparent paints. They are usually applied over the base color of the stained glass to give a pearlescent color.
  • Paints with additives. These can be either decorative sparkles, in the form of hearts, stars or flowers, or a fluorescent or neon effect.
  • Matting paints. They have a delicate range of colors and create a translucent matte pattern on the glass. This paint is applied with a sponge or roller depending on the size of the surface to be painted.
  • Crystal colors. This is usually a milky paint; when it dries, it becomes completely transparent, while reflecting and refracting light into many colored shades.
  • Marble paints. These are most often two colors that are mixed and create the effect of a marble surface of the product.
  • Craquelure paints. They usually come in a set with craquelure varnish and, when dry, create the effect of a product cracked over time.
  • Contour or relief paints. Used to highlight the outline of a picture or pattern. Sometimes they create spectacular dot pictures on stained glass.
  • Paint that creates pearls. The required amount of paint is squeezed out of the tube, depending on what kind of pearl is needed. After a few seconds the paint will round out.
  • Liquid enamel paints. They are used on water, a drop of water is applied to the surface, and the required colors of paint are dripped onto it, which create intricate patterns on the glass.
  • Structural paints. They are usually sold in the form of a paste, when applied, we get an imitation of the surface in the form of leather or stone.

Advice! When creating stained glass for the first time, it is better to use simple stained glass paints.

Styles of painting with stained glass paints

Stained glass painting made using the double stroke technique

There are also many types and techniques for painting stained glass and each time new ones are invented again and again, but old techniques and painting styles do not go out of fashion:

  • Dot painting is one of the old painting techniques. Using stained glass paints, we draw a picture or pattern on the glass with dots that do not touch each other.
  • The streaking technique is used to create “marble” designs. To do this, mix different colors from the same manufacturer and add a colorless color to them, applying them with strokes.
  • The double stroke technique is used to obtain a two-color pattern. We put a dark color of paint on the brush from one edge, a light one from the other, make a stroke by pressing and turning the brush.
  • The ombre technique is done using a sponge, brushes are not used. The result is an interesting effect reminiscent of Victorian plaster.
  • Tiffany. The outline of the drawing is drawn with a felt-tip pen, then the paints are poured in, gradually and carefully so that they do not go beyond the outline and do not mix. On top, after drying, the design is varnished. With this technique, a three-dimensional pattern is created on the glass.
  • Gzhel. This painting technique is done using only two colors: white and blue. The patterns are drawn with a very thin brush, all lines should be smooth and clear.
  • Khokhloma. On a yellow background, patterns are drawn with black, red and green paint. Khokhloma-style patterns are most often applied to a wooden surface, but there are also those who like to experiment and use this style for stained glass.
  • Petrikovskaya painting looks very impressive. Flowers or birds are created with bright colors on a gold or black background. An example of such a painting can be seen in the photo above.
  • Gorodets painting involves drawings with the theme of village life. This is a village log house or peasants in the field. There may be berries and household items. The design is outlined with a white or black border.
  • Avant-garde is the simplest patterns such as stripes, squares or circles. It is not necessary to use geometric shapes; these can be random lines or even shapeless blots.
  • Inscriptions. Well, there are a lot of options. We can sign a personalized gift or kitchen jars, indicating in which one what will be stored.

Painting on glass with stained glass paints is a real art and once you start small, with simple drawings, you will want to improve and learn something new. In the video in this article you can watch the process of painting with stained glass paints on glass.

Dear friends, subscribers and blog visitors!
As I already said, and now I’ll remind you again, truly professional stained glass paints- varnish, or solvent, that is, those that are dissolved only with special solvents.
It is their properties that are most suitable for writing large, durable, high-quality works.

On the other hand, even the best stained glass paints have their drawbacks, and in some cases these shortcomings turn out to be very significant. Let's try to figure out which stained glass paints are best to choose for a specific task.

The main properties of paints that need to be taken into account when choosing

Let me remind you that all stained glass paints are divided into three types:

In this article, we will talk about stained glass paints based on resins, (solvent) and water-based, since they are very popular among lovers of painting glass, plastic, metal...

Lacquer stained glass paints are good for the highest quality of the resulting fill. and, accordingly, the finished image. The surface of their layer after drying is almost perfectly smooth, due to the adhesion of the resin to the surface, they adhere very firmly to it without additional procedures: they do not wash off, do not wear off, do not crumble. Does not require additional fixation at high temperature

Left - Painted light, transparent stained glass Art Nouveau style, size 120/70 cm, Right - Large painted stained glass, size 250/160 cm

In addition, they are amazingly bright, juicy, rich, they perfectly convey colors and shades, maintaining transparency and light transmission. And just as important, these colors then do not change with the age of the work, since varnish paints do not fade in the sun, do not fade after several years of use, and are resistant to ultraviolet rays.

Stained glass varnish paints are ideal for fabric bases, that is, for canvases. You may not know, but solvent-based stained glass paints are successfully used even by artists who paint oil or acrylic paintings, thus complementing their masterpieces.

Read those that block a person’s brain and prevent them from starting to paint.

But varnish stained glass paints have a small drawback. In particular, they smell strongly of solvent; when working with them for a long time, susceptible people may feel unwell, and sometimes an allergy may develop to these paints.

Actually, water-based stained glass paints were created as a safer alternative to varnish. They do not smell and do not cause allergies.

Water-based stained glass paints must be fixed by firing in the oven at a temperature of 160, about 40 minutes.

But, on the other hand, such safety was achieved due to the abandonment of resins, and without it, the paints lost the saturation and brightness of colors: all acrylic stained glass paints are less transparent, their colors are not so saturated, over time they can fade even more, although there is a lot here depends on the brand and manufacturer.

A significant disadvantage of water-based stained glass paints is their fragility. In order to fix the paint on the surface, the product needs to be fired in the oven at a certain temperature. Even after firing, paints do not like long contact with water...

As a result, without additional firing, sometimes they easily fall off the base, sometimes they are washed off or erased with hard objects. Some unfired paints can even be wiped off with a wet cloth. If they are burned after application, the work becomes durable, but even after this the paint can be scraped off with a knife.

On a note

Therefore, by the way, at home you should not apply any paints at all to the dishes on the side on which food is laid out: both lacquer and acrylic paints are equally harmful here. Patterns on dishes are made only using industrial technologies with firing of dishes and paints at temperatures up to 500°C.

By the way, not only paint for glass painting has disadvantages. For example, in order to clean paint from brushes, toxic and unpleasant-smelling solvents are used...

Despite this drawback, oil painting is considered the most popular technique in fine art. Accordingly, there are quite a few admirers of the product, which is neutral in smell, but at the same time has a different kind of difficulty in operation.

For reference: Oil paint is made by mixing pigment with refined oils, while acrylic paint is made by rubbing the pigment with water. There are other paint compositions, for example, oil paint on resins, so-called alkyd paint, which I also use for paintings on canvas.

In general, I love creating work., where you can use different types of paints and materials. Such, and paintings in this technique are much more interesting. And you can express yourself better and show your abilities to others on one surface. And maybe surprise your loved ones with this!

All stained glass paints are intended for decorative purposes only.

So, taking into account these properties of paints, you can decide which stained glass paints are better in a particular situation.

When to use varnish (solvent) paints

Lacquer stained glass paints are used primarily for professional interior decoration, stained glass windows, various glass structures, signs, when decorating interiors and buildings. They allow you to get the perfect painted work or painting with the colors and shades that the artist needs.

Varnish paints are also used:

  1. For artistic;
  2. For decorating porcelain, glass, plastic;
  3. For painting on fabric and
  4. When creating important artistic works, for example, in mixed media.

Fragment from a video lesson on painting a glass painting using mixed media

In other words, if you plan to paint a picture on glass or canvas and if you want it to be bright and durable, you need to choose varnish stained glass paints. In addition, varnish paints do not require additional fixation at high temperatures. And then, it’s hard to imagine canvas in the oven, isn’t it?

Situations when acrylic paints are better

Water-based stained glass paints are used mainly in amateur art, as well as for teaching children how to paint with them. When a novice artist wants to try painting with stained glass paints, but doesn’t want to immediately take on expensive professional products, he tries to paint bottles, cups, and small glasses with acrylic stained glass paints.

Here, possible fading of paints is not so critical, and they can be fixed to the surface during firing quite reliably.

It is also better to choose acrylic stained glass paints in the following cases:

  1. For children's creative activities, such materials are safe and inexpensive;
  2. For temporary decoration of windows, shop windows, interiors. After the holidays or events for which the decoration was carried out, the paints are easily washed off;
  3. For non-critical commercial painting of small objects - vases, plates, mugs, bottles and sets. Here, various motifs are drawn using stained glass paints, congratulations are written, and decorations are made in traditional styles.

It’s a great joy for children to “smack” paint on a large glass surface

Actually, this is why acrylic stained glass paints are different: those that are suitable specifically for children, special decorative ones for temporary application. Among them, you still need to choose the right brand.

Let's make a brief conclusion:

Organic based stained glass paints:
- do not get burned
- lie flat on the surface
- durable, bright, very shiny
— lie down and stick to any surface: glass, wood, plastic, fabric
- work is a pleasure

Water-based stained glass paints:
- baked in the oven
don't always lie flat
- do not shine, moderately durable
- intended for glass painting only
- “they fray the nerves a little, spoil the blood”…. Shouldn't we look for something to replace them?

For painting large stained glass windows, doorways or paintings on glass, canvas, you will need varnish paints. These paints are designed for art on any surface.

In any case, if you have a professional approach to your work, I think you don’t need to explain why varnish paints are preferable to you.

If you need to paint a small vase, plate, decorate a window with snowflakes or a New Year's drawing for Christmas, teach your child to write on glass, water-based paints are your choice.

But when you get the hang of it and start taking painting more seriously, sooner or later you will still take up stained glass varnish paints.

Types of stained glass paints and their features

Using stained glass paints, you can create an elastic applique that will decorate absolutely any glass object or mirror. But first, you should decide what kind of paints you need for painting on glass.

1. Paints for working with glass are produced on a water-based and synthetic basis.

The former can be diluted with water, do not require a varnish coating, as they require “baking”, but are prone to the appearance of air bubbles, so they should be mixed very carefully. The latter, in turn, lie perfectly flat on the work surface, can be mixed to obtain new shades with other colors (preferably within the same series), require varnishing and, unfortunately, have an unpleasant odor. For this reason, water-based stained glass paints are recommended for children. And professionals can make choices based on specific needs.

2. Paints for stained glass are not only bright, but also matte and transparent.

For example, matte ones are suitable for creating New Year's snowflakes and frosty patterns on windows, and transparent ones are suitable for elegant designs on wedding glasses.

3. Stained glass paints can be “baked”, that is, requiring heating to 160 degrees when using a stove, as well as “non-baking”, that is, coated with varnish to protect them from atmospheric and mechanical influences.
