Replacing old steel pipes with your own hands. Replacing water pipes in an apartment: how and what to replace. Assembly of threaded connections

Any major renovation of an apartment involves a complete replacement of not only the finishing, but also communications. One of the most difficult and dirty jobs is always plumbing. Cast iron pipes in an apartment are usually replaced with metal-plastic or ordinary plastic ones. As a rule, if you have all the necessary tools and have purchased the necessary materials, you can do this work yourself, which will save a lot of money. Let's look at how the process of replacing pipes occurs in all rooms.

Replacement of sewer pipes

Sewerage is an important part of the communications running in the house. If it is done correctly, then the owner will not experience any inconvenience - the water will drain well, and there will be no unpleasant odors coming into the apartment from the pipes. But the process of replacing all the parts of this complex system is not as simple as it seems.

First of all, it is advisable draw up a detailed wiring diagram– not only the locations of plumbing equipment will be indicated here, but also the dimensions of all parts. This scheme will make it easier to purchase the necessary materials and in the required quantity, and will also significantly simplify the installation process.

What do you need for work?

Without the necessary tools, this type of work will not be possible. These include:

  • hammer;
  • perforator;
  • chisels;
  • strong screwdrivers;
  • grinder with cutting disc;
  • adjustable wrenches;
  • spray foam gun.

You will also need to purchase sealant, pipes of different diameters, gaskets, and lubricant for joining individual elements. Particularly important elements are rubber connectors, which will allow you to securely connect some wiring elements.

On a note! To seal pipe joints, it is best to purchase silicone sealant. As for the pipes, they should be produced by one manufacturer, which will avoid a number of problems associated with fitting individual parts to each other.

Pipe condition assessment

An assessment of the current condition of the pipes will have to be carried out in any case, even if they are completely replaced. If you have an accurate idea of them, you will be able to choose the most optimal dismantling option. For example, sometimes it’s quite simple to deal with old connections - just rocking the pipes at the joints is enough to simply disconnect them. If you can’t just pull out the pipes, then a chisel will come to the rescue, which is used to process the joints - the seal is removed from them. If the case is very severe, you will have to use a sledgehammer and a grinder to completely disassemble the entire system. It is also worth purchasing a gas burner for dismantling work - some elements will have to be heated thoroughly in order to disconnect.

On a note! If we are talking about replacing cast iron pipes in old apartments, then you don’t have to waste time going through the methods and immediately settle on the third option. Despite the decrepitude of the entire sewer system, the connections of such pipes are usually very strong and will not simply give in.

Dismantling and replacement of sewer pipes

Let's consider it in practice, like a room, toilet or bathroom.

Step 1. The first step is to warn neighbors that the water supply will need to be turned off, and they should also be prepared for the fact that they will not be able to use the toilet or bathroom. Otherwise, during the work, the master may expect an unexpected flow of dirty water. You also need to go down to the basement and turn off the water - both hot and cold.

Step 2. Next, all plumbing fixtures - toilet, washing machine - are disconnected from the sewer drain. To do this, you need to disassemble all connections between them and the sewer. Everything that is possible should be removed from the room where work is being done.

Step 3. After this, you need to unscrew the fixing bolts and remove the toilet itself, remove it from the room. Old and unnecessary pipes are also dismantled.

Step 4. One of the important points of this series of plumbing works is the replacement of the sewer riser. It needs to be cut off, since it goes through all the floors at once, and replacement is carried out only in a specific apartment. The initial stage is heating the lower part of the pipe at the point where it connects with the adapter that goes into the ceiling. It should be heated with a gas burner - the procedure will destroy the old sealing material. In order for the old sealing material to break down faster, the gap between the pipe and the adapter is processed with a screwdriver. By the way, this same method will allow you to disconnect other pipes from the riser so that they do not interfere.

Step 5. The pipe cools after heating with cold water.

Step 6. Using a grinder, the coupling is cut on both sides. Next, it is tapped from the pipe with a hammer and completely removed.

Step 7 Thanks to the previous steps, the lower part of the pipe can be removed. It is enough to shake it a little from side to side, and it will come out easily. Have a helper hold the top of the riser, otherwise it could fall and cause serious injury.

Step 8 A rubber coupling-connector is installed in the lower part of the connector located between the ceilings. Its edge is first coated with silicone sealant.

Step 9 A part of a new plastic pipe is installed into the designed hole.

Step 10 The riser pipe is completely assembled (together with the cross and other elements) - this will help determine the need to trim it.

Step 12 The remainder of the pipe is removed, and a rubber gasket lubricated with sealant is installed on top, as well as below. The upper part of the assembled new pipe is inserted into it.

Attention! Before installing rubber elements, all sockets must be thoroughly cleaned of debris and old grease. And every connection (except for a number of rubber elements) must be made using sealant.

Replacing a tee

A tee is an element that ensures drainage from the toilet into the sewer and connects two pipes (usually the drain from the bathtub/sink and the pipe leading to the sewer riser). Let's look at how the replacement process occurs in an old apartment.

Step 1. All necessary tools and materials are purchased, including sealant, the tee itself, etc. The old tee is simply removed - just as the remnants of the sewer riser were removed in the instructions above. The neck of the pipe is cleared of debris.

Step 2. Silicone sealant is applied to the rubber adapter. You shouldn't feel sorry for him.

Step 3. The rubber adapter is tightly inserted into the pipe and presses well against it. Additionally, tap with a rubber mallet.

Step 4. The edge of the tee, which will be inserted into the rubber cuff, is lubricated with a special silicone grease, after which the tee is installed in its intended place. Other components of the sewer system are also connected to it, which will connect the entire pipe structure together.

Installation of sewer pipes

This part of the work begins after the installation of a new sewer riser. A so-called taper is installed in the outlet, into which the first section of the sewer pipeline then enters. Fixation is carried out using sealant, but only after the technician is sure that the pipe is the right size. Next, the remaining sewerage parts are installed in accordance with the diagram - splitters for the sink, washing machine, tees, branch for the toilet.

Important! After assembling the system, it is important to ensure that there are no leaks. Only after this can it be put into operation.

Replacement of water pipes

Along with replacing the sewer system, it is often necessary to carry out work to replace other pipes - water pipes. In this case, you will also need a grinder, a hammer drill, a hammer, a chisel, a special soldering iron for new pipes, assembly lubricant, and sealing tape (fum tape). In addition, the pipes themselves, fittings, adapters, etc. are purchased.

Step 1. The first step is to shut off the water supply to all pipes. If you plan to replace the risers, then it is important to notify your neighbors about the temporary water shutoff and shut off the supply directly in the basement.

Step 2. Faucets are removed in the bathroom and kitchen. To do this, use a gas wrench to unscrew the nuts on the pipes. After this, the mixer can be removed quite easily.

Step 3. If the toilet has not yet been dismantled, then its tank is disconnected from the water supply, and the plumbing product itself is removed and removed from the room.

Step 4. Old pipes at the junction with the riser are unscrewed using a wrench.

Step 5. Water meters, if installed, are also removed. They can be used again, but if they are already outdated, it is better to replace them with new ones during further work.

Step 6. Old pipes are completely dismantled. If you can’t just remove them, then they can be cut at a distance of about 30-50 cm from the risers with a grinder. This will simplify the work of removing them.

Step 7 To install new pipes, work is being done to make grooves in the walls. These are where the new water pipes will be installed. After the pipes are installed, the grooves will be sealed.

Step 8 The water supply system is being installed - the pipes are connected using fittings. Faucets are installed, and the toilet is connected to the cold water supply system.

How are pipes connected?

Step 1. To solder pipes you will need a special device. Pipes to be soldered must be degreased at the soldering points, and a mark is placed on them indicating the depth of soldering.

Step 2. Next, the pipe and fitting are put on a special device. As soon as the pipe is fused to the desired level, it and the fitting are removed and then joined. They are held in the desired position for approximately 6 seconds. This will allow you to obtain a reliable and durable connection between the two elements.

Replacing pipes in the kitchen

Replacement of the pipeline in the kitchen is carried out after completion of work in the bathroom and toilet. The process is similar to the previous ones, except that there will be slightly less work here, since usually in this room it is enough to simply connect the pipes from the riser to the mixer or drain the drain into a common sewer (provided that the risers are common for the apartment. There are exceptions - separate risers in the kitchen).

Attention! If there are separate water supply risers in the kitchen or toilet, then it is important to worry about installing additional metering devices in the apartment.

Basic rules of work

To prevent the work of replacing pipes in an apartment from becoming a disaster, it is important to follow a number of rules and adhere to certain requirements. Don't forget about preliminary design. If you carry out work without a clearly outlined plan, then there is a high risk of messing up something in the water supply or sewerage system, and also due to some errors and shortcomings, material consumption may increase. The project should immediately indicate where and how the various plumbing fixtures will be installed and what the furnishings will be like in the room. This will help you decide on the locations of connections and drains and think through the system down to the smallest detail.

It is important to be very careful in the process of performing work - plumbing will not forgive mistakes, and incorrect replacement of pipes can turn into a real disaster - for example, flooding of neighbors. It is also worth using high-quality tools - the tightness and reliability of the connections will depend on the clarity of the pipe cut.

You should purchase only high-quality pipes from trusted manufacturers - there are often cases when the system collapses before our eyes due to poor material. It is better to buy everything you need in branded stores after consulting with a specialist.

Plumbing must be purchased before work begins and with a small reserve in case of unforeseen situations. All metal threaded connections must be sealed with fum tape or flax.

Important! If you plan to bury pipelines in the wall, then it is important to use the connection method using soldering. Simply twisted elements are still not reliable enough. And before walling it up, it is important to check the functionality of the entire system at maximum pressure.

And it is worth remembering that access to the pipes should be maximum, even if some of them are hidden. Otherwise, in case of leaks, it will be extremely difficult to repair the system.

Replacing pipes in an apartment is not a disaster. And even a novice master can easily handle the job. But he must be aware that if the installation rules are violated, there is a risk of leaks, which can lead to flooding of neighbors, which the latter will definitely not be happy about. Therefore, it is worth weighing the pros and cons and only then getting to work.

As you know, the housing office is responsible for the external sections of water supply pipes. However, the internal sections of the structures (that is, those located towards the apartment) must be dealt with by the residents themselves.

In what cases are pipes replaced? Sometimes this work is necessary for aesthetic purposes: to improve the appearance of the wiring, to bring the structure to the desired finish in the apartment. In addition, pipes deteriorate over time and begin to leak, which makes their replacement simply necessary. For example, the service life of metal structures is 30-40 years. In some cases, it is necessary to replace structures in an apartment prematurely. The reason for this may be improper installation or unfavorable operating conditions.

To avoid problems, it is recommended to carry out preventive replacement of structures in a timely manner. Signals for this are a strong drop in pressure, which can be caused by plugs of layered sludge, as well as by the presence of through holes that appear due to corrosion.

Instructions for replacing the system

What material should I choose to replace the water supply in an apartment? Reinforced polypropylene is almost ideal. Structures made from this material are easy to install with your own hands; the connections are strong and of high quality. They are affordable in terms of cost, light weight, and can withstand high pressure in the water supply system.

Let's look at how to properly replace a water supply pipe in an apartment. First you need to dismantle the old system:

  • Old risers are disconnected and removed;
  • Old structures are being dismantled. This can be done using a turbine, cutting the structure, starting with the valves;
  • The valves are carefully removed. If they are old, it is recommended to first unscrew the head with the thumb. This will eliminate the need to make a recess in the wall. When unscrewing the head, the valve should be pressed using a gas wrench.

After dismantling the old pipes, you can begin cleaning the system. The structure, right up to the valve, is often clogged with sand and small debris, which can later turn into growths that are difficult to remove. For this reason, cleaning should always be carried out before installing a new system. You can do this yourself, using a steel string or a screwdriver (depending on the design).

If you choose a string, you should attach a handle to its end for ease of use. At the second end you need to fix a small hook. To clean, the string is inserted into the pipe and pushed forward. In this case, you should scroll it.

Following this, the water supply valves are replaced. Which valve to choose? Ideally, it should be ball-type so that the water can be turned off with one turn of the handle. The valve should be fixed to the old thread. In this case, a winding made of special flax treated with paint is used. Before doing this, do not forget to place newspaper under the water supply system so as not to stain the floor with paint.

Then the filter is installed. In this case, the settling barrel should be located at the bottom so that all sand and debris flows into it. An adapter fitting is installed. The latter must provide a transition from a threaded connection to a polypropylene structure.

Pipe installation instructions

First, you should purchase a soldering tool attachment. It must match the dimensions of the structure being installed. The external chamfer is removed from the pipe. The reinforced structure with foil is cleaned. One end of the nozzle is attached to the fitting, the other to the structure itself.

The polyethylene must melt. The structure is placed in a fitting. In a few seconds they will be securely fastened. You can see how the work is done in the photo. The last step will be to check the system for functionality. To do this, partially open the valves and check for leaks in the structure.

Those who decide to renovate a new building apartment will not have to change communications, because the pipes in new houses are made of polymer materials that meet all modern requirements. But if you live in an old house, then replacing the plumbing in the apartment is a necessity. After many years of use, they have reached a high degree of wear and tear, and their appearance leaves much to be desired. If you prepare well, you can replace the pipes in your apartment yourself.

Where to start replacing plumbing pipes in an apartment

Modern communications and components are of high quality and durability. However, sometimes there is a need to replace water pipes in an apartment. This may be for the following reasons:

    the pipe is clogged with rust and mineral deposits (typical of old pipes, the inside of which has not been treated with an anti-corrosion coating);

    if desired, change communications in the bathroom or toilet from open to hidden;

    due to a breakthrough or leak caused by pipe wear or installation errors;

    when remodeling a bathroom, during which it was necessary to change the wiring of communications.

Before you start replacing pipes in your apartment, you need to assess the amount of work to be done and outline a plan for its implementation. It should contain the following items:

    pipe layout diagram;

    replacement materials;

    necessary tools for replacing pipes;

    dismantling old communications;

    installation of new pipes according to the drawn up diagram.

After assessing the volume and nature of the work to be done, it is necessary to draw up a diagram of the planned wiring. It may not differ from the existing one, or it may be completely different.

    galvanized and metal;

    cast iron;

  • metal-plastic;

    plastic.

Types of pipe routing

Pipe routing can be of several types. Let's briefly describe each of them.

    Serial (also called “tee”) wiring. This is the simplest type. Two pipes (with hot and cold water) are diverted from the riser, and from them, using tees, water is supplied to where you need it. This scheme will not require large financial costs or special physical effort from you. In addition, the sequential distribution of pipes in the apartment is easily dismantled and has good maintainability.

    Collector wiring. This scheme involves connecting a pipe to each consuming device. Collector wiring will require more labor (which means the installation cost will also increase), but in general this circuit is more reliable and durable than the tee circuit. In addition, each pipe has its own shut-off valve, which will allow, if necessary, to close the required one, leaving the rest open.

    Open type. With this type of wiring, communications are laid along the walls of the apartment using various connecting elements - brackets, clamps, etc. The disadvantages of this type include low aesthetics - all pipes are visible. But the convenience of replacing pipeline elements increases many times over, and any breakdown can be detected and repaired very quickly without the risk of flooding neighbors.

    Hidden type of wiring. This scheme is becoming increasingly popular. With a hidden type of pipe distribution in an apartment, communications are removed into special recesses that are made in the floor screed. This option has very high aesthetics, but repairing or maintaining such a network will not be easy. In addition, it is possible that after repairing pipes with this type of wiring, the entire room will need repairs.

When is it necessary to replace pipes in an apartment and at whose expense is it carried out?

A pipe leak in an apartment is a big nuisance and, unfortunately, a common event. The areas of greatest risk are apartments in old housing stock, where communications have not been changed for decades. However, you don’t have to wait for an emergency to replace pipes. You can renovate your apartment and install modern pipes instead of outdated ones.

When the need to replace pipes arises, the first question that comes to mind is where to go? Should the management company do this? What is the cost of replacing pipes in an apartment? Is it possible to contact a third party to carry out this work?

    Replacement of pipes in the apartment. How to act.

According to the rules for maintaining common property, the management company is responsible for the section of communications up to the first drain valve from the riser. After the tap, the pipe belongs to the owner of the apartment, and only he is responsible for its performance and safety. Therefore, eliminating the breakdown or replacing this area falls on the shoulders of the homeowner. It’s a different matter when repairs or replacement of risers are required. Since these pipes are the responsibility of the housing office, if they leak or malfunction, you should contact them for replacement.

However, as practice shows, utility workers are usually reluctant to contact apartment owners on this issue and do not always respond promptly to calls for plumbing work. Quite often there are reasons why they do not want to replace the risers themselves. To avoid such a situation, you need to contact the management company not orally, but with a written statement, a copy of which you should keep. The Housing Office should put a resolution on this statement. In it you should indicate the reason for replacing the pipes.

If the answer to repair or replacement is negative, it is necessary to insist on an inspection of communications, after which a report on the technical condition of the pipes must be drawn up. If a refusal follows even after this, you should again take a written response from the Housing Office with a justification for the refusal. This document will be very useful if the riser breaks and you suffer property damage. In this case, the management company must be sued and demanded to compensate for the losses incurred.

There is another option for replacing a public pipe. You can do this yourself by involving a specialized organization. However, this does not cancel the application to the housing office according to the above scheme. If the hired company replaces or repairs the pipes in your apartment improperly, the document will be able to help in solving the problems that have arisen.

You also need to remember that if it is the management company that replaces the pipes in the apartment and determines the cost of the work, then the owner of the premises pays for the service.

It cannot be said that any refusal by the management company to replace risers will be illegal. A reasoned refusal is quite possible, for example, if the owner of the apartment moved the pipes in the bathroom during the renovation, in order to implement the planned new design of the premises. In this case, the transfer or replacement of communications is not the concern of the management company.

If leaky places and traces of rust are visible on the riser, then this is a serious reason to contact the housing office. True, specialists can not replace pipes, but “repair” them by installing a clamp on the problem area. Sometimes there may be 5-6 such clamps on a pipe.

    How to write an application for pipe replacement.

This application is made in free form. In it, you describe the situation and demand the intervention of the management company to replace or repair the pipes in the apartment.

It is also worth noting that the owner of the premises who submits the application has no debts to pay for utilities, does not make late payments, and therefore can count on the provision of quality services. An application is written addressed to the head of the management company. If there are any difficulties with drawing up the document, then samples are available at any housing office, you can check them.

    Replacement of pipes in a privatized apartment and a municipal one. Who cares?

Not everyone living in an apartment can be its owner. The owner of the premises pays for work in a privatized premises. When concluding an agreement with a contractor, you need to check that he has permission to carry out this type of repair. The document must also contain a clause stating the company’s responsibility for its work. If the contract is concluded with a management company that constantly maintains the house, then it must provide all the necessary guarantees.

If a person lives in a municipal apartment, then you need to look at the terms of the rental agreement. It is possible that the tenant himself must carry out the necessary work to replace or repair pipes in the apartment. In this case, you need to look for an organization that will replace the pipes and pay it. If the agreement states that the repair of communications should be carried out by the municipality, then it is necessary to write an application to the appropriate department under the administration of the city or district.

What material to choose so that the replacement of pipes in the apartment is successful

The most common pipes for cold and hot water today are made of metal-plastic, polypropylene, copper and galvanized steel. Let's take a closer look at the pros and cons of each material.

Metal-plastic pipes

Metal-plastic pipes have the form of a structure in which there are four layers - cross-linked polyethylene, an aluminum layer, the thickness of which is 0.4 mm (performs a reinforcing function), a layer of glue and wear-resistant plastic on the outside.

These communications are universal. Based on the name, such a pipe combines a layer of both plastic and metal. Thus, the outer layer is not subject to corrosion and has a long service life. The inner layer makes the pipe reliable, yet flexible and durable. The developers of metal-plastic communications managed to eliminate the problem characteristic of plastic - instability to high pressure and temperatures.

    corrosion resistance;

    ease of installation;

    the outer layer of the pipe does not conduct current;

    many different fittings.

The disadvantages of such pipes are:

    the need for constant tightening.

Polypropylene pipes

If you are replacing pipes in your apartment with polypropylene ones, the price of the repair will definitely please you. The cost of such communications today is the most optimal in terms of price and quality ratio. You will also get high performance characteristics of pipes made from this material. This type of communication can be called the most utilitarian and practical.

Unlike pipes made of PVC or polyethylene, polypropylene pipes are not so susceptible to temperature changes, especially low ones. Polypropylene can also cope with hot water, but it is necessary to prevent exceeding the threshold values.

How to replace pipes in an apartment with your own hands

Replacing pipes in an apartment is not a cheap task. To finally understand this, just call a couple of companies that provide similar services. Thus, if you have at least minimal installation skills, you can replace the pipes in the apartment yourself. At the same time, it will be possible to save a significant portion of the funds in the budget, even taking into account the purchase of some tools.

At first glance, replacing pipes in an apartment is not so difficult - remove the old ones and install new polymer ones. However, this work only seems simple; in fact, there are many nuances that should be taken into account in order to avoid troubles.

Replacing water supply pipes in an apartment

    Old water pipes, manufactured in the 1960s and 1970s, were made of “black” steel. Obviously, such communications in a modern apartment do not stand up to criticism. Many owners replace them with new ones made of plastic.

    As a rule, water pipes in an apartment are replaced according to the diagram below.

    First, a new layout of the plastic pipeline is planned. Replacing pipes is a good reason to improve the wiring. Usually they replace the old tee with a more modern manifold.

    Having planned the wiring and drawn the location of the new home water supply lines with chalk along the walls, you can proceed to purchasing all the necessary parts. It is better to calculate the meterage of pipes in an apartment on site, which, moreover, practically eliminates errors with the number of fittings. If you plan to replace them with plastic or metal-plastic communications, this assumes that they will be installed by welding or fittings, respectively. It is difficult to give a clear preference to any option, but it is worth noting that the installation of metal-plastic pipes is simpler and faster compared to polypropylene products. However, the latter win in reliability.

    Having purchased replacement pipes and fittings, you can begin dismantling the old pipeline. To do this, turn off the water in the apartment at the cold and hot water supply risers. Then they disassemble the threaded coupling on the home water supply line, which connects it to the valve on the riser. When all this is done, there is no need to stand on ceremony with the old pipes - they are cut off with a grinder and taken out of the apartment.

    Having removed the old pipes from the apartment, you can begin installing new water pipelines. Polypropylene and metal-plastic pipes are mounted from the tap to the manifold comb (if a sequential system is selected, then to the tee).

    The joints of the polypropylene water pipeline are connected by welding using the same couplings. The pipe and coupling are placed on a soldering iron, heated and pressed into each other. Metal-plastic is assembled faster: the locknut is unscrewed from the fitting, a pipe is inserted into it and put on the fitting fitting. After this, the locknut is screwed onto the end of the fitting, thereby tightening the joint.

After all of the above, all that remains is to connect the pipes to the fittings of the hot and cold water risers.

Replacing sewer pipes in an apartment

Replacing sewer pipes in an apartment will be somewhat different, primarily due to more complex calculations and dismantling. At the same time, the assembly of a new pipeline usually occurs faster than in the case of communications for cold and hot water. This is possible due to the fact that the sewer pipes are joined through a socket joint with an O-ring. Therefore, there is nothing difficult in replacing these communications in an apartment with your own hands, you just have to prepare for dirtier work than in the case of plumbing or heating systems.

The actual replacement of sewer lines in an apartment takes place in three stages.

    At the very beginning, you need to update the siphons under the sinks. After this, the slope of the sewer pipes that connect the siphon and riser is calculated. Slope is the difference between the entrance to the pipe and the exit from it, with the entrance located under the siphon, and the exit in the tee on the drain riser. The height difference is directly related to the length of the pipe. Typically, the slope of a pipe with a diameter of 50 mm is 2-3 cm per linear meter. After calculating the slope, it is necessary to project all dimensions onto the supporting surface of the future sewer pipeline, drawing the location of the branch on the wall. Having completed all this, you can remove the old sewer pipes.

    Dismantling the old system begins with shutting off the fan riser. This happens by inserting a pneumatic plug into the collapsible end of the riser inspection, which will block the drains from the neighbors. Next, you need to very carefully hammer out the central tee, which collects all the sewer pipes in the apartment. Then the old pipes are dismantled. To disassemble them, no special actions are needed; cast iron pipes are broken with a hammer, and their remains are removed from the apartment.

    After dismantling, the assembly stage begins. First, a PVC pipe is installed from the toilet flush to a cast iron tee with a diameter of 100 mm. After this, drain pipes of taps and bathtubs with a diameter of 50 mm are inserted into the tee. Installation is simple: the smooth end of the pipe is inserted into the socket, directed in the opposite direction from the direction of drainage of wastewater.

After completing these steps, the plug is removed from the revision and the riser is sealed (just screw the cap on). The replacement of the sewer pipes in the apartment has been completed and they are ready for use again.

Replacing heating pipes in an apartment

Replacing these pipes will be the fastest. Since you cannot replace the supply and return risers (this is communal property), all the work consists only of replacing the batteries and those sections of pipes that lead from the radiators to the riser.

Replacing communications should not be carried out during the heating season. When the heating is turned on in the apartments, you will not be allowed to interfere with the operation of the system.

Replacement of heating communications is carried out as follows:

    After making sure that there is no water in the riser, you need to cut off the horizontal distribution pipe, leaving a small section near the riser;

    A thread is cut into this area (with a die and a die), onto which a ball valve is screwed. The same actions are performed on the second riser, after which there is no urgent work left, since the interests of the remaining residents of the house are no longer affected;

    Having installed new batteries, you can begin to install pipes. The first to install is the supply pipe, which is connected by bends to the upper fittings of the radiators. After the supply pipe, a discharge pipe is installed, which is also connected by bends to the lower fittings of the batteries. The pipes are connected by welding, since polypropylene products that can withstand a coolant temperature of 95 degrees are used for heating;

    the last stage is to connect the supply and discharge pipes with the valves on the riser.

Replacing drain pipes in an apartment

The vent pipe serves to prevent unpleasant odors from entering the apartment. It connects the sewer riser to the street. Usually these pipes are installed vertically, but other shapes can also occur, for example, angular.

It is quite possible to replace the drain pipe in an apartment on your own. The materials and tools for this work are similar to those needed to replace the sewer lines. There are a number of rules to keep in mind.

    The diameter of the riser and the waste pipe must match.

    The end of the drain pipe should be led to the roof or to a place where the unpleasant odor will quickly dissipate.

    The fan pipe must go through warm rooms, and its end must go outside. This is necessary for the formation of draft, which appears due to temperature differences.

    Typically, each riser has its own fan pipe. Since standard-plan apartments, as a rule, have no more than two risers, this condition should not create unnecessary problems. You should not replace the drain pipe using a vacuum valve.

So, replacing pipes in an apartment can easily be done on your own. All that is required of you is accuracy and taking into account certain nuances. If no mistakes were made when replacing the pipes in the apartment, then the new communications system will last for decades without breakdowns.

How much does it cost to replace pipes in an apartment?

If replacing the pipes in your apartment yourself is not part of your plans, you can always turn to specialists. In this case, the determining factor when choosing a company will be the cost of their services. When replacing pipes in an apartment, the price depends on the following factors:

    type of communications;

    quantity of materials (depending on the size of the apartment or house and the wiring method);

    hidden or open type of pipe laying;

    presence or absence of additional equipment.

In the table below we give the approximate cost of services for replacing pipes in an apartment.

Nothing lasts forever! And if there is, it may no longer suit you. So it is with communications. Owners sometimes have a desire to update the network completely or partially. There can be a lot of reasons for this - from a simple leak to a change in design.

Let's figure out how to replace pipes with plastic ones yourself.

Plastic is the most popular material today

Introduction to plastic pipes

What are the advantages of the material and are there any disadvantages? How can you be sure that the best choice is made? First things first.

Advantages and disadvantages

Why is replacing metal pipes with plastic ones a wise decision? The secret is in the special properties of this material.

Among the advantages are:

  • duration of operation (up to 100 years depending on the type of structure);
  • lightness of the material;
  • immunity to corrosion;
  • ease of installation;
  • strength;
  • noiselessness during network operation;
  • elasticity;
  • environmental friendliness (the chemical composition of the liquid moving through the system does not change);
  • low thermal conductivity;
  • versatility of the gasket (the material can be installed in both open and closed ways);
  • ease of transportation;
  • moderation in price.

There are a lot of advantages. Plastic is the most optimal material among its “brothers”. Networks made from it last a long time and do not cause trouble to the owners, of course, if the replacement of plastic pipes in the apartment was done correctly.

There are few disadvantages - just a few:

  • restrictions on the temperature of transported substances (depending on the type of structure);
  • selection of installation technology (they also vary and depend on the type of material);
  • compatibility in composition (control to ensure that liquids that can corrode plastic are not transported through the network).

Types of plastic structures

Let's consider how to replace old ones with plastic pipes so that the disadvantages do not appear. During the production process of products, other substances are added to plastic, so you may find the following markings on purchased items:

  1. MP – metal-plastic. This “duo” of ingredients is said to be ideal for honing your home craftsmanship. The material does not fail either in the cold (withstands frosts very well) or when transporting liquids with high temperatures (up to 900 degrees). The only negative is sensitivity to external deformation. Bend such elements carefully.
  2. PE or polyethylene. The main advantage of this composition is that you can work with it at low temperatures, that is, even when it is -20˚ outside, you can carry out work on laying a polyethylene network or repair already installed communications. The main thing is to choose the right pressure threshold - low or high.
  3. PES, which means cross-linked polyethylene. Such material is used both for laying water supply lines and for heating networks. Why "stitched"? Simply, the technology of processing products under pressure, aimed at increasing the threshold of resistance to temperature changes and increasing stability, is called “stitching”. Elements are treated using nitrogen, silane gas, the peroxide method or irradiation of electron flows.

This is what cross-linked polyethylene looks like

  1. PVC or polyvinyl chloride. If you see such a marking, do not buy the product if you plan to install a network for domestic use, since the composition contains chloride. Such material is suitable for arranging swimming pools and chemical plants, but not for the home.
  2. PP – polypropylene. This material is suitable for supplying water to housing. Thanks to a special device (3 layers - protective, plastic itself and foil), the products are resistant to temperature changes and can successfully transport liquids reaching temperatures of more than 1000 degrees. However, there are also disadvantages: low elasticity (products do not bend well), the impossibility of replacing elements (welding is used “forever”, so replacing a damaged section of a plastic pipe is impossible in this case).

And this is polypropylene

Replacement technology

It's time to move on to practice. Let's look at how metal-plastic pipes are replaced.

Due to its ease and plasticity, installing plastic is a pleasure

Work order

Planning everything correctly is half the battle. The preparatory stage is no less important than repair work. If you have decided on the material, then proceed according to this scenario:

  1. Draw a plan or drawing of what exactly you are changing and how you are going to do it.
  2. Calculate how much material is required for the work.
  3. Purchase pipes and connecting elements.
  4. Find tools and devices for joining products.
  5. Turn off the water.
  6. Dismantle the old network fragment.
  7. Install the plastic parts.
  8. Check system functionality.
  9. Get rid of trash.
  10. Enjoy the results.

Dismantling old elements

Do-it-yourself replacement of pipes with metal-plastic ones begins with destruction. Dismantling can differ only in technology and the number of tools used. Breaking is not building, so you can figure out how to remove failed network fragments yourself. In some places you can actually unscrew it, but in other places you will have to use a grinder to cut it off.

For work, get the following tools:

  • a hammer with a wooden or rubber head;
  • Bulgarian;
  • perforator;
  • chisel;
  • grinding discs;
  • screwdrivers;
  • adjustable wrenches.

Worth paying attention! Try to combine pipe replacement and repair, then you can hide the new network in the walls.

This is what the wall looks like after replacing steel with plastic.

Installation of plastic

When the old elements are dismantled, you have two options:

  • install new plastic fragments in their place;
  • lay the network differently - according to a new plan.

The connection of plastic products depends on their complete composition. Welding technology can be applied with a construction soldering iron/welding machine or chemical composition, either using fittings or gaskets and bolts. Focus on the type of plastic pipes you prefer.

If you want to “drown” the network into the walls, you will have to make grooves before installation. Don't forget about insulating the elements. Turn on the water only when the products become a complete system.
