What is the exam: numbers, facts

The Unified State Exam (USE) is a general state certification of eleventh grade graduates, the results of which are counted upon admission to a secondary specialized educational institution or university (higher educational institution).

At the moment, the USE is held in 14 subjects, of which 4 are foreign languages (English, German, French and Spanish). To get a certificate, a graduate needs to pass 2 compulsory exams: Russian and mathematics. Additionally, each university independently determines which exams applicants must take for a particular specialty. From 2020, the USE in English is also planned to be made compulsory.

In 2016, the trial USE in English is planned to be held in early April: the oral part - on the 8th and the written part - on the 9th (these results are not counted). The main exam will begin on June 10.If, for a valid reason confirmed by facts, the graduate is not able to take part in the certification, he has the opportunity to take the exam later, in the reserve period.

If you disagree with the results of the exam, you can file an appeal - your answers will be rechecked.

After successfully passing the exam, the participant is issued a corresponding certificate, valid for the current year and 4 subsequent years. It must also be presented at school in order to obtain a certificate of secondary education.

Upon admission to the university, the applicant submits an application indicating the USE scores; the selection committee checks their accuracy. At the same time, you can submit documents to no more than 5 universities in 3 areas.

At the end of 2015, to pass the USE in English, it was enough to score 22 points. However, for admission to the language faculties of prestigious universities in the country, it was necessary to get 60-70 points in this type of exam (according to the admissions committees of Moscow State University, Moscow State Linguistic University, etc.); passing scores of universities are updated annually.

  • In Moscow the Center for Independent Diagnostics was opened, where you can take a trial USE and OGE at any time (not only for schoolchildren, but also for parents), and you can take it as many times as you want.

What to take with you for the exam and how to behave in the exam

Be sure to take your passport and a black gel (capillary) pen with you.

The list of prohibited items is much more extensive: these are any media (phone, tablet, etc.), any video and audio equipment, books, notes and "cheat sheets", as well as proofreaders and pencils.

During the exam, you cannot get up, talk - of course, with the exception of the oral part "Speaking". If you need to leave the classroom temporarily, you will be accompanied by one of the examiners. The participants are under video surveillance and any violations can be punished by removal from the exam (and the question of retaking will be decided by the State Commission).

The structure of the exam in English

The test consists of four compulsory written parts, for which the taker receives a maximum of 80 points: Listening, Reading, Grammar and Vocabulary, and Writing.

The fifth, optional oral part, was introduced very recently and is called "Speaking": it can give you a maximum of 20 points. It is imperative to pass "Speaking", even if you are not aiming at a language university: this is a fairly easy way to gain additional 10-15 points (which is not so little).

Listening

9 tasks, 30 minutes

Listening is listening to speech. After listening to a few passages in English, you should understand what they were talking about and answer a few questions in writing for each passage. Fragments are played 2 times, the response time is fixed. The topics of monologues and dialogues that will be offered for listening are weather forecast, announcements, TV and radio programs, interviews, reports.

An error characteristic of this part of the exam: the takers choose the answer option, which contains the words most often sounding in the audio fragment. But you can hardly answer the questions correctly without understanding the essence of what is happening. To better understand the meaning of the conversation, pay attention to the intonation of the speakers and the sounds that you hear in the audio clip (the sound of the sea, car signals, music, etc.). It is very important to be able to recognize the subtext, sarcasm in the speaker's speech, which can radically change the meaning of the statement.

Preparation

Only regular listening to English speech with memorization of unfamiliar words will help.

At the first stage, it will be very useful to read and listen to books dubbed by native English speakers. However, be sure to choose books adapted to your real level: pre-intermediate, intermediate, etc.

It is very effective to watch English-language films "in three touches": without subtitles, with English subtitles (with writing out new words) and with double subtitles (in Russian and English). It is advisable to limit viewing sessions to 5-15 minutes (further the level of perception decreases). To prevent your vocabulary from developing one-sidedly, try to watch diverse films: on a household topic, from the life of lawyers, doctors, scientists. And it is desirable that these were serials: by watching several seasons, one episode a day, you will be able to hone the appropriate vocabulary to perfection, after which you can start a series of other topics.

A little later, it makes sense to switch to listening to radio news: information is more difficult to perceive without visuals and subtitles, especially given the fast pace of reporters' speech. We recommend listening to the BBC radio channel, because the listening videos for the exam will be read with British pronunciation.

Reading

9 tasks, 30 minutes

This activity tests your ability to read and understand unfamiliar text without a dictionary: you should be familiar with about 97% of the words. And again, read the assignment carefully, a typical mistake in this part is a misunderstanding of the question asked.

Preparation

In all available ways to replenish vocabulary, tirelessly repeat learned words and try to use them in context - this is how they are better remembered. According to the 2016 codifier, publications of a popular scientific nature and excerpts from works of fiction will be offered for reading. Read modern online newspapers and magazines: The Guardian, The New York Times, BBC, Listverse, etc. It will be very useful to study the exam in English reading, analyzing the mistakes you make.

Grammar and vocabulary

20 tasks, 40 minutes

In fact, this is almost the easiest section of the exam in terms of format. The first half of the section consists of reading short passages of text and substituting missing words. For substitution, the proposed word must be grammatically changed (or left in its original form, if the rules require it) or choose a suitable single-root word, for example, absolute - absolutely, win - won, Russia - Russian.

The second half involves filling in the gaps in the text with the proposed words - you do not need to modify the word, you just need to choose one of four options. As with all multiple choice tests, if you don't know the answer, pick one at random - chances are it turns out to be correct.

Preparation

If you know English at a good level, this section will not present you any difficulty. Special preparation for the format of this assignment is not required - it is enough to repeat the English grammar (and not stop working on vocabulary).

Letter

2 tasks, 80 minutes

Since the reading of the answers from the exam forms is carried out using a computer scan, write your answer neatly, clearly and legibly, with paragraphing and structuring.

Task number 1: "Letter to a friend"

Volume: 100-140 words

Imagine you received an email from an English-speaking friend and are writing a response. You must understand the questions asked in the text and answer them in your "letter".

Typical mistakes:

  • ignorance of the rules for drawing up personal letters (repeat them without fail!)
  • misunderstanding of the essence of the questions asked
  • lack of an answer to one of the questions
  • inability to correctly formulate own questions according to the specified plan
  • not using linking words

Task number 2: Essays

Volume: 200-250 words

You are asked to express your opinion in writing about some statement on a certain plan. And again, you need to read the assignment very carefully and in no case deviate from the proposed plan.

The essay should be in a neutral style (avoid colloquial expressions), coherently, divided into paragraphs in accordance with the logic of the story.

If 30% or more of your answer coincides with the source (that is, in the answer you use words from the "problem statement"), the task will not be counted.

How to count the number of words in an essay

If the letter above contains less than 90 words, and the essay contains less than 180 words, they will not be counted (you will receive 0 points). If they are too long, the checker will score only 154 words in the first case and 275 in the second, everything else will not be checked: you may lose a farewell phrase or signature (in a letter) or conclusion (in an essay).

What are the rules for counting words? All words of the essay are taken into account, in the case of a letter - everything from the address to the signature. One word is considered:

  • all numbers in digital form (12, 2015, 10,000)
  • all short forms and abbreviations (I’m, don’t, can’t, USA)
  • compound words (well-known, good-looking, sixty-four)

In numbers expressed in several words, all words are considered (two thousand and fifteen - 4 words).

Preparation

The advice is simple - write an essay. A lot, on different topics. Count words, control the coherence of the text, do not forget to highlight paragraphs (one thought - one paragraph). Well, your work should be checked by an English teacher who is familiar with the requirements for the assignment.

Speaking

4 tasks, 15 minutes

During this part of the exam, an audio recording of your answer is made, which is sent for processing (verification) at the end of the exam. In other words, the role of the examiner is played by a computer (but one of the exam organizers is constantly present in the classroom). You can see all the tasks on the monitor - the time counter is also displayed there.

At the end of the exam, all answers are sent for verification: each examination record is checked by two trained specialists according to uniform assessment criteria.

Task number 1

In the first task, you will be asked to read a popular science text in English for one and a half minutes - first "silently" and then aloud. They also give one and a half minutes for preparation. You need to read the passage correctly, with natural intonation, without unnecessary pauses.

Task number 2

As a second task, you are asked to read the text of the advertisement and ask 5 questions to it - in accordance with the proposed plan. Preparation time - 1.5 minutes, each question should sound no longer than 20 seconds (watch the timer).

Task number 3

The third task: choose and describe one of the three proposed photographs. The preparation time is 1.5 minutes, the response time is 2 minutes. The story must be built on the points of the proposed plan. The narration should be logically coherent and contain introductory and closing phrases.

  • Recall that the coherence of the text is given by expressions like firstly, secondly, thirdly (firstly, secondly, thirdly), consequently (hence), finally (finally). The topic of introductory words and linking words needs to be worked out thoroughly.

Task number 4

In the fourth task, you are asked to compare two images. It is also extremely important here to carefully read the text of the assignment and cover the proposed plan in the story: for example, find similarities between the pictures and point out the differences. A typical mistake is the description of each image separately, while it is precisely a comparison, a juxtaposition of two images that is needed.

You have 1.5 minutes to prepare - watch the timer to start on time and not exceed the story limit, which is 2 minutes. It also requires introductory and concluding phrases and the observance of the coherence of the presentation.

Typical pitfalls of parts 3 and 4 of the exam are questions like “where and when”, “who / why”, etc. When answering the first question of the pair, you can completely forget about the second - and lose points.

  • Tip: If you notice that you have made a mistake, do not be alarmed. Some errors are permissible and do not affect the score, the main thing is not to get confused and not completely shut up.

The total time for this part of the exam is 15 minutes.

Preparation

Speaking is a skill and the ability to speak English needs to be developed. Listen to English speech and repeat what you hear. Use every opportunity to communicate in English: go to conversation clubs, speak English with friends. It is extremely important that the interlocutor not only listens to you, but points out mistakes and corrects, therefore it is highly advisable to find a qualified tutor to prepare for this type of exam.

10 common misconceptions when preparing for the exam in English

  1. It makes no sense to study the format of the exam: a person who is fluent in English will easily pass the exam for the highest score
  2. If initially your knowledge is below the Upper-Intermediate level ("above average"), you have no chance to pass the exam
  3. If you do not know spoken English, it is impossible to pass the exam, since you have introduced "Speaking", and without it you cannot get the necessary points
  4. You can prepare for the Unified State Exam in English in just six months (or even faster)
  5. After reading the tips, secrets and "life hacks" for passing the exam, you will be ready for the exam
  6. For successful delivery, it is enough to listen to lectures and video lessons of teachers
  7. The best way to prepare is to repeat the test demos and reconcile the answers.
  8. If you pass the practice exam perfectly, you can stop classes.
  9. During the exam you can make a "call to a friend" or use a cheat sheet
  10. Answers can be purchased before the exam

And remember: it is impossible to prepare for the USE "the night before the exam", start at least six months before passing (or better - 1-2 years before the exam).
The English USE-2016 is scheduled for June, so you need to start preparing for it immediately. High points to you!

Have you ever tasted saltwater? I guess you have and if so, you will agree with me that it’s not very refreshing. In fact, drinking more than a few cups worth can kill you.

According to the United States Geological Survey, whose mission is to collect and disseminate reliable, impartial, and timely information that is needed to understand the nation’s water resources, about ninety-seven percent of the water on our planet is saltwater; the rest is stored in lakes, rivers, glaciers and aquifers underground. Moreover, only about one-third of the world’s potential fresh water can be used for human needs. As pollution increases, the amount of usable water decreases.

Water is the most precious and taken-for-granted resource we have on Earth. It is also one of the most threatened resources. Increased population and possible climate change will put more and more strain on supplies of this vital resource as time goes on. What could we do in this situation? Though it may seem like science fiction, the solution could lie in outer space.

I'm not saying we’re going to be teleporting to a spring on the other side of the galaxy or colonizing another planet just to have longer showers - it’s much more mundane than that. What we could achieve realistically in this century is the successful use of the solar system's rare metals and water, barring the invention of the matrix.

You may be surprised to learn that the metal in your keys, coins, cell phone, computer, car and everywhere else, originally came to this planet from space. When Earth formed, the heavy metals sank to the center and formed a solid core. The lighter elements formed the mantle and the crust we live on. Asteroids and comets that struck the Earth brought water and metals to the surface.

There are thousands of asteroids orbiting near Earth. Most asteroids are made of rock, but some are composed of metal, mostly nickel and iron. Probes could be sent out to these to identify useful ones. Then larger probes could push them towards the Earth where they can be handled in orbit.

In order to fuel ships and probes, we simply need to find a source of water, such as a comet or the surface of the moon. We collect the water and pass an electric current through it from a solar panel. The water separates into oxygen and hydrogen, which in liquid form is a powerful rocket fuel.

Is this really possible? We may soon find out. Private company SpaceX has already started delivering equipment to the International Space Station (ISS).

The ISS is proof that countries once at each other’s throats, like America and Russia, can work together and pull off multi-billion dollar projects.

Recently, a company called Planetary Resources Inc. made the news for getting big names like Google and Microsoft to invest in exploring asteroids for material gain. Although it will take many decades, it is wise to put the gears in motion now.

We've already landed probes on the surface of asteroids and taken samples from them. We can put something as large as the ISS, which weighs just short of 500 tons, according to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), in orbit.

We can make a half-million-mile round-trip to get rocks from the moon. We can do all of these things already. They just need to be applied and developed in a smart way.

Oh, this wonderful school time, with its vivid (and not so) memories, teachers, subjects, last bells, which, as usual, ends with one special touching event - the last bell. Parents are worried about their child, who will soon take his first step into adulthood.

But before celebrating their graduation and entering the desired university, eleventh graders are forced to play an insidious game called "Unified State Examination in English." Now, what d "ya know about it?

The Unified State Exam in English is taken when entering humanitarian specialties, for example: philology or linguistics, translation or teaching, international relations or regional studies, etc. As you may have already noticed, training in the above-mentioned areas is precisely based on a foreign language, so English is considered a core subject.

The exam itself consists of written and oral parts, which are not held in more than one day. In the first - students pass the written part, it includes: listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. In total, on this day, the graduate needs to complete 40 tasks in 180 minutes. Can you deal with that? A student can receive a maximum of 20 points for each section. So, on the first day you can and should score 80 points.

The second part - the oral part of the USE in English - takes place on another day and is surrendered at will. It lasts only 15 minutes and consists of 4 tasks. During this time, students will have to answer questions and describe pictures. On this day, a graduate can earn another +20 points.

It is logical that it makes sense to take the oral part: in case of unsuccessful answers, you do not lose anything, and in case of successful ones, you will earn additional points. Think about it! Thus, a graduate can achieve a maximum of 100 points in the exam. The minimum score for passing the exam is 22 points. If lower, then everything is gone! Below is the number of USE points in English and the grade corresponding to them:

Obviously, I would like to pass the exam with a high score, because there is a chance to enter, for example, on the budget, and during the entire study receive a decent scholarship and all kinds of buns from the state.

Below we list the best ways to prepare for the exam in English.

Dates for the exam in English 2019

The approved exam schedule should be published in January 2019 (so far it is known about the period for the delivery of the main part of the subjects from May 28 to June 20). But today there is an opportunity to learn something interesting:

  • from the second half of March to mid-April 2019, for example, an early examination will take place, from March 21 to April 4. However, not all schoolchildren can take the USE ahead of schedule. These graduates include those who graduated from school before the 2018/2019 academic year, underachieving students of previous years without a certificate, as well as students in evening schools. Those who decided not to enter the university, but to go to serve in the army, can also take the test ahead of schedule; children leaving to live abroad; applicants of foreign universities, or those who came to study from abroad. An exception is also made for children leaving for sports, cultural or scientific contests or competitions, as well as for schoolchildren who are assigned medical procedures during the main testing;
  • from the last days of May until the beginning of June 2019, the main period of the exam is scheduled. Vanguy that the first exams will begin on May 28, 2019;
  • the start of the additional period of the exam was announced on September 4, 2019. The additional examination will take place during the first half of September.

Changes in the exam in English 2019

In principle, no special innovations have been noticed at the moment. Although there are some clarifications. For example, according to the wording of the criteria, which have become more specific and unambiguous. If earlier there were questions about what constitutes a violation, then from now on there will be no more such questions. Comparison:

  • 2017 (the task is completed in full: the content reflects all the aspects specified in the task (full answers to all questions are given, three questions are asked on the indicated topic); the style of speech is chosen correctly, taking into account the purpose of the statement and the addressee; the norms of politeness accepted in the language are observed);
  • 2018 (the task is completed in full: the content reflects all the aspects specified in the task (full and accurate answers to all questions are given, three questions are asked correctly on the indicated topic); the style of speech is chosen correctly, taking into account the purpose of the statement and the addressee; the norms of politeness accepted in the language are observed ( 1 incomplete or imprecise aspect allowed). The wording of task 4 in the "Speaking" block has been clarified.

Bonuses are good, but understanding its strengths and weaknesses is essential to successfully overcome this challenge. Therefore, now let's talk about the structure of the exam, which is conventionally divided into four main blocks and one additional (195 minutes).

Listening Comprehension

In the first block (30 minutes), the student completes 3 tasks. The examiners turn on the recording and do not stop it until the very end, however, between the fragments there are pauses for reading the assignments and transferring the answers to the form. For each correct answer in this and other parts of the exam, the student receives 1 point.

  • The first task is to listen to 6 statements and correlate them with statements, one of which is superfluous, that is, it will be necessary to identify the correspondences between the main ideas and audio fragments.
  • In the second exercise, dialogue and remarks are given - it is necessary to determine which statements are false (false) and which are true (true), in addition, to identify which statements were not mentioned in the text (not stated).
  • In the remaining 7 tasks (No. 3-9) it is proposed to listen to the interview and mark the correct answer out of the three proposed. The student listens to the audio recording and selects the correct answer to each question. For this task, you can also get maximum 7 points.
Advice: Understand the meaning of the words the speaker is saying. There may be hidden answers to tasks.

Reading

In the second block (also 30 minutes), the ability to analyze and highlight basic information from the text is tested. It, like Listening, consists of 3 parts (9 tasks).

  • In 10 tasks, 7 mini-texts (3-6 sentences in each) and 8 headings are given, which must be selected for each text, with one extra heading. Maximum points: 7.
  • In the 11th task, taking into account the cause-and-effect relationships and the logic of presentation, you have to fill in a special text with six gaps. There are 7 excerpts to fill out. Hence, one more. Maximum points: 6.
  • In the remaining 7 tasks (№ 12-18) you read a small English text and 7 questions to it. Each question is given 4 answer options, of which you need to choose one correct one. Maximum points: 7.
Advice: try not to spend more than 10 minutes on 1 task; delve into the meaning of the text (look for keywords); learn / repeat how complex sentences are built; in the third task, the questions after the text are arranged in the order in which they are answered in the text. That is, the answer to the first question will be at the beginning of the text, to the second question - after the answer to the first, etc.

Vocabulary & Grammar

70% of the assignments (№ 19-31) are aimed at the knowledge of word formation and the school curriculum in English grammar. In the last seven (no. 32-38) exercises, you must make a choice in favor of one of the four suggested answers, taking into account the context and the desired grammatical form. All about everything is given 40 minutes.

  • First, the text is given with 7 missing words. To the right of it there are words that require grammatical transformation (put a verb at the right time, for example) and insert. Max. number of points: 7.
  • In the second task - a text with 6 gaps. Again, you need to grammatically transform (form a single root word that matches the text in meaning) and insert words into the text. Max. number of points: 6.
  • Again, the text with 7 gaps, you need to choose 1 correct option out of 4 proposed. Max. number of points: 7.
Advice: for all tasks, allocate no more than 12 minutes (except for the second - there is 15); read the context; repeat: tenses and forms of verbs, voice (active and passive), comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives, ordinal numbers, the formation of suffixes and prefixes in English.

Writing

In the fourth block, there are only 2 tasks (but which ones!), For which 80 minutes are given (for them you need to have time to write and check your work).

  • First, an informal letter to a friend (about 100-140 words). The text of a short letter from this very "friend" is given, after which there are questions. You need to read the text with questions, and write an answer (that is, answer a friend's questions and ask your own). Max. number of points: 6.
  • Secondly, an essay on a given topic (about 200-250 words). In this section, a statement is made (usually rather controversial), and the student writes an essay on this topic, expressing his opinion, demonstrating the learned vocabulary, knowledge of grammar rules, the structure of various written works, and, finally, the ability to describe and argue his point of view in writing ... You have to do it in 80 minutes. Max. number of points: 14.
Advice: do not write an essay on a draft in full, it is better to jot down your thoughts and ideas on it; do not forget about a high-quality introduction (description of the urgency of the problem) and completion; do not write addresses (even fictional ones); Check out examples of friendly English letters on the Internet; do not forget to thank your friend for the letter (at the beginning); ask questions in the letter; love paragraphs (but not 1 sentence each); use " I believe...», « I assume...», « In my opinion... "; the conversational style is also acceptable (" Guess what?», « What "s up?», « Howdy!», « See ya!», « Later!"); write in a neutral style (task 2); justify and confirm your point of view, describing different ones; draw conclusions and summarize.

Speaking

The oral part of the exam in English is not required, but speaking is necessary to get the highest possible score. This block is the shortest and only takes 15 minutes. It consists of four tasks, for which you can get a total of 20 points: reading the English text aloud, posing questions to the ad using keywords; description of the picture / photograph; comparative analysis of the two proposed photographs, guided by a given plan. The student hands over the tasks in front of the computer, which shows the countdown, and his answers are recorded. At the same time, there is an organizer in the audience who monitors the course of the exam and at the first doubtful situation has the right to use a firearm (jk).

  • In the first task there will be a text of a near-scientific nature, which must be read aloud in the most expressive way. This will take 1.5 minutes (+1.5 preparation time). Accordingly, for the entire task - no more than 3 minutes. The task is estimated at 1 point.
  • The second task is an ad for which you need to come up with 5 keyword-based questions. Preparation - 1.5 minutes, the wording of each question - 20 seconds. Total - 3 minutes. Here you can earn 5 points.
  • In the third task, 3 pictures / photographs will be shown. We choose one and describe it according to the proposed plan. The task is about 3.5 minutes. 7 points are given for successful completion.
  • And in the fourth task, we are again offered pictures. This time there are 2 that you want to compare and describe their similarities and differences. You will also need to explain why the chosen topic is close to the graduate. The number of minutes and points is equal to the number of the same in the previous task.
Advice: practice pronunciation and read texts on various topics with the correct intonation and expression (see YouTube for Christ "s sake!); observe pauses, accents and intonation; do not forget about time and try to read clearly, but delay; learn to ask questions about texts on different topics; know how to compose questions correctly; read the assignments carefully and answer all the questions; tell me which photo you have chosen at the beginning of the answer (" I "ve chosen the photo number... "); most likely, you will have to describe a photograph of a “friend”; use speech cliches like: “ the 1st picture depicts ...», « whereas the 2nd shows us ...», « the main difference is that ...», « also, they have the same ...», « in comparison to the first picture, this one is ...».

By the way! If you want to learn how to write an essay correctly in English for the exam 2019, then read it!

Let's look at the changes that the USE has undergone in comparison with last year.

Typical mistakes when preparing for the exam

The collection of the main typical mistakes in preparing for the exam in English, first of all, includes the inability to correctly allocate the preparation time. The student knows what he is having problems with. More time should be devoted to this. Another common problem is the inability to speak. You can practice this skill by constantly playing small dialogues with everyday situations in your head, or by describing objects, people and buildings that you see on your way (to perfection) to school, cinema or supermarket.

In addition, there are the following errors when preparing for the English exam:

  • Out of date tutorials or resources in the network can also do a lot of harm in preparation. Graduates are offered many materials that promise the best preparation. But not everyone copes with this task. Better to use the tutorials advised by professionals. It is imperative that you go to the FIPI website, where the most recent data are always published.
  • Inconsistent preparation. The student either does not sit down at all at the textbooks, or sits at them without rest. It is necessary to draw up a plan over time and strictly follow it. It is necessary to start preparing for exams in the fall of grade 11, and even better - from grade 10. The volume of knowledge is large, it takes a lot of time.
  • Ignoring incomprehensible material. When preparing for the exam, you should start repeating what is not clear. To fully assimilate the material, read the topic in the textbook, contact your tutor or your teacher, sign up for courses and find out what you do not understand, do not try to calm yourself down. With the material that you master, it will be much easier: a few days before the exam you will be able to quickly remember and go over all the previously weak points.
  • Not comprehensive training. During the lesson, teachers themselves often pay attention to reading and grammar, while forgetting about correct pronunciation and perception. Alas, so far such a sad trend can be traced in many schools. It is worth remembering that all the components of the program will be presented in the problems in the exam. And it is imperative to pay attention to each.
  • Cramming... The difficulty of the exam is that it is designed for understanding the material, some tasks are designed for an impromptu answer. Usually, such tests allow you to get the most points and compensate for the lost ones. Having memorized all the material, you will not be able to explain similar examples that will be presented in the test. In addition, you will not have enough time to memorize the entire volume of the material.
  • Passing only trial texts... Yes, they are definitely needed, but do not count on the fact that if you scored the maximum score on such, then the main exam is in your pocket. Tasks are completed in different ways, tests are mixed, become, in a way, individual.
  • Wrong mental attitude may interfere with the exam. The ability to concentrate and relax at the right time will help you to tune in correctly. Positive thoughts also play a role. They help to cope with assignments. Believe in yourself, but don't be driven - too much arrogance can be a treacherously insidious enemy. Everything should be in moderation.

A hot time for graduates is approaching - on the eve of the Unified State Exam, including in English. Millions of eleventh graders actively study textbooks, take private lessons from tutors, and learn the rules. But in the 21st century, the Internet has become an excellent assistant for those who are interested in preparing for the exam in English. In this article, we will provide an overview of the best online resources for preparing for this exam, as well as look at the structure of the final test and give useful tips on how to take the exam in English.

The Unified State Exam (Unified State Exam) is a final examination paper at a school, without which it is impossible to enter a university. When entering a higher educational institution, the points of the graduation exam are also important, so schoolchildren try to pass the exam for the highest scores. The Unified State Exam in English 2018 is not mandatory, but applicants who intend to enter a specialized university will have to take this exam.

In terms of the level of complexity and its structure, the USE in English is similar to the FCE international testing, for the successful completion of which it is necessary to speak the language at an upper-intermediate level (Upper-Intermediate).

For Russian-speaking schoolchildren, this is a rather high bar, so it is better to start preparing for the upcoming final exam in advance - from grade 9.10. In this case, in 2-3 years, the student, slowly from the initial level, will be able to fully acquire knowledge and develop skills for successfully passing the USE in English.

Of course, you can prepare for this exam faster, but for this the student must have a sufficiently high level of proficiency in a foreign language, at least an intermediate (Intermediate).

To prepare for the successful passing of the exam, it is necessary not only to know the subject well, but also to understand how the examination work works.

What are the elements of the USE 2018 in English? The examination test consists of several parts: written and oral. The first part is mandatory, and the second is optional, they are rented on different days.

The written part, in turn, consists of five sections:

  • listening;
  • reading;
  • vocabulary and grammar;
  • letter.

For each section, the student can receive a maximum of 20 points. The graduate is given 180 minutes to complete 40 tasks. Having passed the first part of the exam perfectly, a student can score 80 points out of 100. To get the maximum number of points, he will have to come again and pass the oral part. It contains only 4 tasks, for which only 15 minutes are allotted. For the oral part, you can get a maximum of 20 points.

So, for the Unified State Exam in English, a graduate can gain the maximum number of points - 100, which practically guarantees him admission to a specialized university. However, in order to pass the exam for 5, it is enough to gain 84 points. And in order for the test to be counted, it must be passed at 3, that is, at least 22 points.

As a rule, the test results are published on the official website of the exam two weeks after passing the oral part. You can find out your result on the official resource ege.edu.ru by filling in the appropriate fields with your data. Having successfully passed the exam, the graduate receives an electronic certificate and is entered into a special register. Paper certificates have not been issued since 2014.

To understand how the English final exam works, we will take a closer look at an example of such a test. And at the end of each section, we will provide useful tips from tutors who specialize in preparing students for the USE.

Principles of Listening Acceptance

This section is divided into three parts, and it takes 30 minutes to complete it. These are exercises 1 to 9 out of a total list of 40 tasks. The student will hear an audio recording of three fragments, which the examiners will turn on and will not stop for 30 minutes. There are pauses between the fragments of the recording so that the student can read the assignment and transfer the answers to the form. For each correct answer, the graduate will receive 1 point.

  1. 7 statements are given. Then the student will have to listen to 6 statements and correlate them with statements, one of which is superfluous. You can get 6 b.
  2. 7 statements are given. The student listens to the dialogue and determines which statements correspond to the dialogue (True), which do not correspond to reality (False), and which are not mentioned in it (Not Stated). It is possible to get the maximum 7 bp.

Remember that in the relative clause who is used for people, which for things, and where for places. Also remember that the infinitive is used to express purpose.
  3. The questions in the third task are arranged in accordance with the position of the answers in the text, that is, at the beginning of the text you need to look for the answer to the first question, a little further - to the second, etc.

Principles of passing vocabulary and grammar

This section is designed to test the vocabulary of the students, as well as how the graduates have mastered grammatical constructions in the English language. The student will have to complete three tasks in 40 minutes.

  1. Given a text with 7 words missing. To the right of the text there are words that need to be grammatically transformed (for example, put a verb in the past tense) and inserted in place of the gap. Task for 7 bp.

In total, a maximum of 20 points can be scored for written work.

How to write a letter to a friend in English correctly:

  1. A letter to a loved one is written in an informal style.
  2. The design of the "header". In the upper right corner, you need to write the address: first the city, then the country of residence. But it is better not to indicate the street name and house number, because even if the address does not exist, it can be interpreted as the disclosure of classified information.
  3. In the same corner, below the address, skipping one line, write the date.
  4. Then, on the left, an unofficial appeal to the addressee is written: Dear Nil / Joe (the name will be indicated in the assignment). Keep in mind that Hello is not allowed in this case. Do not forget to put a comma after the address. Continuation of the letter - from a new line.
  5. Each paragraph, according to the rules, begins with a red line. You should start the letter by expressing gratitude to your friend for the message you received (Thanks a lot for your last letter). It will not be superfluous to apologize for the long answer (Sorry I haven’t been in touch for so long). It will be a good move if you mention some information from the received message.
  6. Then the main part is written (the second and third paragraphs). In the second part, you need to answer the questions received in the letter, and in the third part, you need to ask a friend questions.
  7. The fourth paragraph is the final one, in it it is necessary to notify the addressee of the end of the message (I "ve got to go now!). It would be good form if you offer to keep in touch (Take care and keep in touch!).
  8. At the end, you need to write a standard cliche - Best wishes, All the best (a comma must be put), etc. Under this phrase, on the next line, you need to write your name.

How to write an essay for the Unified State Exam in English:

The essay is also written in a neutral style and contains five paragraphs:

  1. Introduction: the topic-problem is formulated and the existence of two opposite points of view is immediately indicated.
  2. Own opinion: express their own point of view on this issue and provide 2-3 arguments in its defense.
  3. Opposing Views: Opposing points of view are discussed and arguments are presented to support them.
  4. Expression of disagreement: you need to explain the reason for disagreeing with opposing opinions, and defend your point of view without using the arguments from the second paragraph.
  5. Conclusion: a conclusion on the question posed is being written.

Tutor Tips:

  1. It is strongly recommended not to go beyond the required volume. It is permissible only by 10% inaccuracy, that is, for writing it is permissible to write from 90 to 154 words, and in an essay - from 180 to 275 tokens. If a student writes at least one word less, then he will not receive a single point for the task. If the volume is exceeded, then the examiner will count the specified limit from the entire text and will evaluate only it, while the examiner removes points for the fact that the work is not completed, and the topic is not disclosed or conclusions are not written.
  2. Don't write paragraphs containing only one sentence. Each thought must be revealed and argued. You can use such speech constructions as I believe, In my opinion, etc.
  3. Pay attention to your writing style: in your letter, in any case, do not use colloquial expressions like Wish me luck! or Guess what ?, and in an essay it is better not to write informal well, cause and slang expressions.
  4. At the same time, it is recommended to use linking words in written works, since they give the text consistency, allow opposing either two parts of the sentence or complement one of them.

Principles of passing oral speech

This is the shortest part of the exam, which is taken on another day, and lasts only 15 minutes, during which the student must complete four assignments.

A feature of this part of the test is that the graduate performs tasks in front of a computer, on the screen of which a timer is turned on, and all answers are recorded through a microphone. At the same time, the examiner in the classroom monitors the progress of testing.

  1. A popular science text appears on the monitor. In 90 seconds, you need to quickly read it to yourself, and in the next 90 seconds, you need to read it out loud with expression. Execution time - 3 minutes. For the task - 1 p.
  2. An advertisement of an advertising nature is displayed on the screen. Based on the keywords, you need to compose five direct questions to this text. 90 seconds are allotted for preparation, after which it is necessary to have time to formulate each of the questions within 20 seconds. Execution time - 3 minutes. For correct execution - 5 points.
  3. Three photographs have been proposed, of which you need to choose one, and describe it in accordance with the proposed plan. Execution time - 3.5 minutes. You can get - 7 pts.
  4. Two pictures are shown, which must be compared, describing the differences and similarities, explaining the choice. Execution time - 3.5 minutes. It is possible to dial - 7 b.

A maximum of 20 points can be received for the oral part.

Tutor Tips:

  1. To prepare for the delivery of the first assignment, it is worth working on texts of different topics, reading them with the expression: you must observe all the pauses, natural intonation, logical stress. It is also important to keep within the allotted time, but you should not rush too much.
  2. To successfully complete the second part of the oral exam, you need to practice the ability to ask questions to a variety of texts. Do not forget to use auxiliary verbs when writing questions and put them in the correct form, consistent with the noun.
  3. In 2018, on the exam in the third task, you will be asked to describe a photograph to a friend. Therefore, when composing a text, you need to use an appeal. At the beginning of the description, you must indicate which photo you have chosen (I "ve chosen photo number ...). It is also important to answer ALL questions asked in the assignment, indicate where and when. Do not forget about the introductory phrase (I" d like to show you a picture from my photo album./Would you like to have a look at my picture?) and the final cliché (I hope you liked my picture./That"s all for now.).
  4. In the fourth task, the emphasis should be on comparing images, rather than on their descriptive characteristics. When comparing pictures, one should use such common clichés as In comparison to the first picture, this one ... The first picture depicts ... whereas / while the second picture depicts ..., The main difference is that ... and others.
