Many readers keep a diary. What is it and most importantly why?

In schools, teachers introduce reading diaries for their students from the 1st grade, gradually complicating its form.

Reader's diary of a student - this is a cheat sheet with which it is easy to remember the books read, heroes, the main idea and retell the works.

In the primary grades, keeping a reader's diary teaches the student to read systematically, develops the initial ones. Analyzing the work, the student writes down the course of his thoughts, learns to retell. Of course, at first, one cannot do without the help of parents, because it is not always easy to find the main idea of ​​a work, as well as to correctly fill in and present one's thoughts in a reader's diary. The joint form of work in the diary unites, makes it possible to read together and discuss, as well as to understand for parents which genre is more interested in the little reader. In the future, this will contribute to the correction of reading directions by genre.

Of course, the main task of keeping a reader's diary at school is to expand the horizons of knowledge.

Making a reader's diary

There are no strict requirements for the design of the reader's diary. To date, printed diaries have been developed in accordance with the classes. They are colorfully decorated and contain game tasks.

It also became possible to keep an electronic reader's diary. It helps the student to develop the skills of working in the Word program, finding the necessary information on the Internet, pictures and photos, correcting his own spelling mistakes. But in elementary school, this can develop into the fact that parents will keep a diary for the child, and this should not be allowed.

However, all teachers are interested in using ready-made or electronic diaries, as they do not meet their requirements, so each teacher has the right to offer his own options for conducting.

Each student draws up the title page in the diary at his own discretion, indicating the surname and name.

It is better to take a notebook in a cage for ease of drawing. Each page (or spread of a notebook) is a report on the book read.

In any case, two completely identical diaries cannot exist, since everyone approaches this issue individually.

How to design a reader's diary in grades 1-2?

In grades 1-2, you can offer such an approximate plan for working on a work: the author and title of the work, the number of pages read, the main characters, the main idea (what about?), genre. You can also add a picture. It can be made by the student through carbon paper or independently.

By grade 3-4, you can complicate the work plan on the work in the reader's diary. Such work is already more like an annotation for a book you have read.

How to organize a check of the reader's diary?

Checking the reader's diary by the teacher should be mandatory and systematic. The student must understand why he is doing this, and his work is appreciated and approved. Otherwise, all the work is done in vain.

At the lesson, you can selectively interview students on the books they read.

You can hold an extracurricular reading lesson every 2 weeks, where all the children will go to the blackboard, demonstrate the book and BRIEFLY retell the contents. Any student and teacher can ask questions about the content. The goal is to understand how much the student understood the content of what was read. Such lessons develop oral speech, learn to briefly retell, answer any questions and get marks.

In grade 4, organize a check of the diaries in absentia. After all, this is a full-fledged reader's review! The main condition is that everyone must be tested.

  • It is better to start filling out the diary immediately after reading the book, while the impressions are still fresh.
  • After reading, the reader must necessarily explain why the book has such a title.
  • If the work is large, division into parts is allowed. Be sure to include the pages you read.
  • Artwork must be age appropriate. Reading small informational texts from encyclopedias in grade 4 should not be allowed.

At the end of the school year, many teachers give students lists of literature that needs to be studied during the holidays. However, books are not just meant to be read. Who needs a reading diary

Some parents have a negative attitude towards the management of CHD. Very often you can hear the phrase: “How to keep a reader’s diary for a child, even if sometimes I don’t remember the name of the author or heroes of the read work? Based on this, we can conclude that we read only for the sake of a moment of entertainment. However, this is not quite true.

The general education school curriculum includes works that teach children kindness, mutual understanding, relationships and other necessary qualities of an intellectually developed person. In addition, the purpose of the reader's diary is not at all to develop a love of reading in the baby. As a rule, children read any work (even a fairy tale) in order to learn something interesting that they have not heard about before. In addition, many competitions, quizzes or marathons are held, in which children will have to remember what they once read. For example, tell a fairy tale, a riddle, answer a question about some hero. And how will they be able to do this if the material they read has flown out of their memory a long time ago? If the kid knows how to keep a reading diary and use this knowledge, then the information will be available to him at any time.

What is a reading diary for?

The reader's diary is a kind of cheat sheet that will help the child remember all the material they have ever read. In addition, the black hole teaches children to make an analysis of the work, brief conclusions from what they have read. After all, this is what is most difficult for elementary school students. Studying the works, writing down the summary in the black hole, the child also trains writing skills. Memory is also trained, because writing down the names of the main characters and the author, various dates, the content of the text, the child remembers them better. Among other things, parents, by controlling the maintenance of CHH, can understand which genre is more interesting for the child and what should be paid attention to. Keeping a reading diary

In principle, a black hole is an ordinary notebook in which the student writes down his thoughts, some quotes from the work, a summary, the names of the author and the main characters. The simplest model is when the sheet is divided into two columns, in one of which they write the title of the work, in the other - their conclusions. However, this scheme is more understandable to the older generation; it is not suitable for kids. How to keep a reading diary for children? In principle, there is nothing complicated in this. However, it will be difficult for the child to draw up such a model. It is best to do this with your parents. So, they take a simple student notebook (preferably not very thin) and draw it into several columns:

It is advisable to fill in the CD immediately after reading the work or the next day, having the text at hand in order to remember the most important points. From time to time, you need to look through the completed pages to refresh your memory and consolidate the impression of the work. How to write a reading diary

For a diary, it is advisable to take a common notebook in a cage, because a thin one will quickly lose its attractive appearance and a first grader will not have the desire to fill it out. In addition, it can quickly get lost. Together with the child, decorate the cover beautifully, on which indicate the name and surname of the student. If desired, you can decorate the binding with pictures or drawings.

On the first pages, create a kind of memo on which indicate what literature you need to read.

A template for a ready-made reader's diary can be taken from the teacher. But in most cases, teachers recommend making out a notebook at their discretion. As a rule, a reader's diary for first graders consists of the following columns:

  • Title of the work.
  • Author.
  • Genre. Here you need to indicate what exactly the baby read: a fairy tale, a story, a story, a verse, etc.

It is very difficult for a child who cannot read to do homework. He is not interested in the lessons, he is restless, he does not visit the library, because reading books with a low reading technique is not so much pleasure as torment.

Reading is a complex psychophysiological process in which two sides can be distinguished:

1) semantic - understanding, awareness of the content and meaning of the text being read

2) technical (subordinate to semantic, serving it) - speed (tempo), correctness and expressiveness of reading.
Meaningfulness of reading

assumes the reader's understanding of:

The meanings of most of the words used in the text, both literally and figuratively;

The content of each of the sentences included in the text, clarification of the semantic connection between the sentences;

The content of individual parts of the text (paragraphs, episodes, chapters) and the meaning of these parts (i.e. not only what is said, but also what is said by it);

The main meaning of the entire content of the text, i.e. awareness of this content and their relationship to what they read.
Correct reading

it is expressed in the fact that the reader avoids mistakes, or, on the contrary, allows: substitutions, omissions, permutations, additions, distortions, repetitions of letters (sounds), syllables and words; correctly or erroneously emphasizes the words of the text being read.

No wonder I love to read. At the Faculty of Journalism, we had the subject “History of Foreign Literature”, thanks to which gigantic lists of books appeared in my life. During the semester, it was necessary to overcome from 50 to 70 works. Complex, deep, heavy. "Doctor Faustus", "Magic Mountain", "Ulysses", "One Hundred Years of Solitude", "Billiards at half past nine" - all these books settled in my head for a long time, because we took them apart for hours in pairs.

But time passed, and the contents of the books were slowly erased from memory. I began to read literature in a completely different way. After reading, there is too little left in my head: I realize this in a month or two.

Who was the main character? Why was he in conflict with the world? And how did it all end?! What to do: read again?

What to do

The solution was born in a conversation. My friend and I discussed this problem and suddenly realized that we need to start a reader's diary. Like in school, but more interesting. Not just to list what happened, but to give a detailed analysis of what was read.

I fired up the idea. I was looking for something similar on our site. I found a diary for schoolchildren - "Reader's Diary" by Marta Raitzes. It has 4 columns: book, author, translator, quotes and my thoughts. There are pages with facts from the book. Fields where you can draw a mind map, write a fanfiction or a review. Add the recipe that you read in the work. And even make a crossword puzzle based on the book.

It didn't even bother me that the diary was for children. After all, those who decide to read and take apart books piece by piece, this will not stop. But I didn’t want to wait until he came, and I left the option on the note.

My version of the diary

Decided to start with something simpler. And in the end I bought a notebook, opened the first page and divided it into several columns:

  • title,
  • author,
  • the year of publishing,
  • the main characters,
  • action is happening
  • what's happened,
  • What is the book really about?
  • quotes.

I filled in almost all the lines in a swoop. Until the column "What the book is really about." Stopped here. The last time I analyzed the works with the help of the phrases “Cool book! I already wanted to re-read it right away ”or“ Be sure to read it! I couldn't sleep because of her until three in the morning." But for a reader's diary, this scheme was not suitable. 4. Don't always look for "the main idea."

This advice applies to fiction. Sometimes we want to reduce works to a list of problems that are described in the text. But often it is not created for this at all. A fiction book is the world into which the writer invites us.

Do not forget to enjoy its colors - stylistic devices, language, charismatic characters, author's style.

American writer, poet and critic Mark Van Doren writes: “Reading Shakespeare's play, we are in it. We are drawn there quickly or smoothly - most often quickly - and once in this world, we are completely immersed in it. This is the secret of Shakespeare's power over us - and it remains unsolved. The author creates a special world around us, which we did not even suspect. And this world absorbs us without a trace.

5. Draw a story.

My reader's diary is not limited to text. Visual images help me remember what I read: I draw a cover or a scene from a book that hooked me the most. What for? The book "Visual Notes" says that our brain processes information verbally and visually. This means that sketches are not simple pictures, but a way to reproduce important moments from a work in memory.

What is the use

Keeping a reader's diary turned out to be terribly interesting. While I do it "the old fashioned way" - by hand, in a notebook, filling every cell with my imperfect handwriting. I'm thinking of switching to the electronic version: to make a big google doc. Or adapt a creative notebook: one of them will come to me soon.

The diary has several important advantages.

  • A complete reading experience. The book does not disappear in the abyss of thoughts, but stands on the shelf of memories. With a cover, explanations and a bookmark on the right pages where you liked the quotes. There is a feeling that you "lived" the story and understood the author. Figured out everything that was bothering you.
  • Like a detective. The text about the book is like an investigation: you are trying to dig deeper than usual. It seems that you were reading an action-packed thriller, but in fact - a psychological drama. Or at first glance there was a simple story about the life of a choreographer. And on the other hand - a guide to survival in the creative profession.
  • Memory. The content is really remembered many times better. Especially when you write the text by hand, reflect on the decision of the protagonist, highlight the thoughts that you liked.
