Making a career - instruction. How to get promoted. Positional growth

Do you need a career?

Do you really want to pursue a career? Why do you want to take a higher position, position? What will the promotion of the career ladder and the hierarchy give you?

Your answers to these questions are very important. It is quite easy to make a career in the sense that it does not require any special talents, no special character traits, or any special initial data. It is very difficult to make a career because you will have to devote your whole life to it, subordinating everything else to this goal.

Why do you need career development? There are other ways to make your fortune. There is a separate article "How to make a fortune?" Self-realization is also possible in another field. Do you really need a career?

However, before you make the final decision whether you will climb the career ladder, carefully weigh the pros and cons. Once you've made your decision, follow it. Otherwise, it will be very sorry for the effort spent on unfinished business. Make your career constantly, every working day. You shouldn't do a career for two days, then score for a week, then remember again and take up a career. There will be no good from such actions, only wasted efforts.

Career rules

Here are a few rules of a successful careerist, which I myself have actively used with consistently excellent results, and which my clients use with success. There is nothing special about these rules, but they must be followed in order to advance in the service.

Create and follow a career plan

The only way to make a big project (and a career is a big long project) is to write a detailed plan with small steps and execute it. We will draw up a career plan with goals and deadlines. We will strive to fulfill it. What to do if your career plan does not coincide with the plans of the employer, read below.

Catch fish where it is

Choosing the right place to work is the most important step in your career.

There are tons of companies in which the corporate culture is not conducive to a career. All the seats are occupied, all the chiefs of all levels are holding on to their chair, they are afraid of new, any development. Stability has been elevated to a core value. Such companies often function quite normally, pay a decent salary, but they will not suit you. If your goal is a career, look for another job immediately and without regret. This is not the place for a careerist.

By the way, when I write “look for another job,” it means that you are given two months to transfer, and not two years to slowly go to interviews. In a career, as in many other things, it is very important to learn how to achieve your goals in a given time frame.

Another option is that the company is dynamically developing, but categorically underestimates its staff. All leadership positions involve outsiders. Their employees almost never get promoted. In such a company you can work for experience, it is good to come from outside to a managerial position, work there, make a project, go for promotion to another company. Decide for yourself why and how long you will work for such a company. Work exactly as much as you decide, and not during the day more.

There are many companies and organizations where the career ambitions of employees are welcomed and encouraged. Go to work there, you can quickly make a career there.

Build a network of contacts

The work of a clerk is bad for starting a career, not only because it is very difficult to prove yourself on it, but it is easy to ruin your reputation, but also because it does not at all contribute to the development of a network of contacts. This kind of work doesn't suit us.

We need work that does not interfere, or even better, directly requires building a network of contacts, meeting people, discussing professional topics. The development of a network of professional contacts is facilitated by participation in professional communities, conferences, seminars, infrastructure and commercial projects in which many people are involved. How many colleagues' phone numbers do you have in your notebook with whom you can discuss professional issues? There should be over 150 to begin with.

Be a public person in your professional community, come up with initiatives, proposals, participate in the training of young professionals. Build a reputation with as many people as possible as a problem solver, not a problem solver. Then you will be constantly offered participation in various projects and interesting positions. By the way, training young professionals is a great way to develop a network of contacts. After all, these specialists will not always be young, some of them will take key positions in a couple of years, and you will be a guru in their eyes. You will definitely be called if a serious project appears. And the rest, who will not be nominated, will be your talent pool. Having come to a good project, you will be able to attract your best students who have not yet had time to advance enough and are waiting for their chance.

In this case, we have recommendations on how to properly navigate between quarry reefs. Here are seven rules for a successful career.

# 1. Be a specialist in a narrow field

Being a specialist in a narrow field is one of the most important rules of life. Life evolution itself obeys this law. A small firm that cannot find its niche in the market is doomed to fail. The same is the case with the employee. A person who is not an expert in his field is doomed to live from paycheck to paycheck without prospects for financial development. At one time, electronics was an innovation. The personal computer arose due to the development of electronics, and therefore due to the development of specialization.

Building competence is central to your career development. But do not confuse a deep study of the profession in order to work late according to the job description (and without it). You should also not confuse the development of your profession with the implementation of functionality that does not concern you. In Russia, and throughout the CIS, it is very fashionable to load an employee who has shown excessive agility.

It is not profitable for you to work more. It is profitable for you to work for yourself and perform only the functionality that will work for your resume and contribute to vertical growth.

At one time I happened to work as a marketing analyst in one of the largest telecommunications firms. In addition to the main job, at first, a new inexperienced employee was loaded with work that did not concern me. Specifically, to make reports, which should be done by an employee of a neighboring unit. He did not do this, since he was loaded. As a person willing to work, I certainly took on the job. My bosses noticed this and began to add new ones. Began to be sewn up in a routine. There was no way to refuse this functionality. Since the bosses agreed at their level. But I was not interested in what my superiors agreed on. I needed to get rid of this job. One smart colleague advised me to do the following. Sometimes (and better often) it is worth being cunning. Do work that doesn’t bring development to you intentionally badly. This will make you mistrustful. On the one hand, there will be a rumor about your incompetence, on the other, you will no longer be entrusted with none of your business. You have free time for self-development during working hours, and this already works in the future to increase your earnings. Believe me, you don't have to work hard. Especially if it is of no benefit to you personally. As a result, they stopped trusting me to do my job, because I do it “badly”. I freed up my time to learn new functionality. At first, the boss disliked me because of this. But later I came up with a very useful report for my boss. With this, I recovered, and later applied for a resume to another company, since I did not find an interesting and more paid position in the current one, and got a job with a salary twice as much.

Morality

"Pump up" yourself with new skills that will give you the opportunity to earn more. Get rid of uninteresting tasks and in no case do not do your job.

# 2. Determine Where 20% Effort Will Give You 80% Results

Richard Koch, professor of management economics and business strategy at the University of Birmingham Business School, advises early on in your career to determine in which direction 20% of your efforts will give you 80% of results. The famous Paretto principle. It is based on the correct choice of the minimum of the most important actions that will bring the maximum result, while further improvements may be unjustified. It doesn't matter who you are. Employee, founder, self-employed person, small or large employer. In any case, you have clients on whom your prosperity depends.

In any region, 80% of people achieve only 20% of the result, and 20% of people are content with as much as 80% of the wealth. Why is this happening? What are people doing wrong? First of all, the aforementioned Richard Koch advises to start asking yourself questions. Are you the right person for your clients, are they the right person for you? Do you work for the company you want? Is in the right department? Are you busy in a profitable area of work? Do you enjoy your work? If not, then you should change the place of stay. Koch was involved in management consulting. In his field, he constantly asked himself questions. Accordingly, we have a clear picture here. I got a big client - great! I signed a big contract - super! You have a team of students to whom you can transfer routine tasks - a class. You have close contact with the management - great.

You should not sit for years in one place, afraid to move to another job. This is silly. Don't listen to girls in HR who say they don't like flyers (employees who change companies more than once a year). Yes, such people are perceived with suspicion. However, everything can be played up by correctly writing a resume. Including frequent job changes. Public opinion negatively about extravagant personalities should not worry you. You must learn one fact - you were born for yourself, not for the public. Look for what will bring you maximum results with the minimum expenditure of energy.

No. 3. Start working for yourself early in your career

We've already talked about planning. Now we are going to talk about planning your working time. It must be planned with the expectation of preference for those tasks that are many times more productive than others. I am sure that, starting your career, you will be dumped tasks a la "clean up the documentation, consisting of 1500 letters", "answer 567 site signers by mail in the style of" Sorry, but we cannot help you ", fix 5000 incorrectly printed flyers letter ... Yes, there will be many such tasks. Get rid of them by any means. Up to imitation of sick leave. Nothing personal just business. You are not hired as a valuable person, but as a valuable machine that performs a set of functions. However, you are not a cog. You benefit from doing less and getting more. This very "getting more" clearly does not depend on how well you draw the letter in the 3456th flyer. What kind of development can we talk about if you are doing this? But there is still personal time. And it belongs to you, not your employer. The job of the employer is to get the most out of you. Your task is to give him the minimum. Be prepared for the fact that the employer will often beat you, so you should always strive for the place of this very employer.

By swapping places with him, you change your attitude. Now you dictate the terms. Only in one case should you not strive to open your own business. If in your current company you are actively absorbing knowledge. This is exactly the asset that will help you turn a dataset from your head into real money as quickly as possible by opening your own business. As a rule, active absorption of knowledge occurs in the first 2-3 years of your career. During this period, you will not receive a lot, but you will know a lot in order to learn how to receive a lot. In principle, during this period, you can not rock the boat, but do not forget to get rid of stupid tasks.

I used this principle early in my career. For five years I have changed many companies and have never regretted the fears of the new employer, they say, "Why do you leave so often?" In my first job, I learned meticulousness from my female colleagues. I admit that working in a women's team, and even, let's say, too scrupulous (analytics department), is far from sugar. But I did not baptize children with them. He left there soon and received a position with a salary twice the previous one. There was a great team there. At this point, I learned to think strategically. I no longer performed boring tasks, but solved and gave advice. The next position brought me twice the salary, but also more problems. The working day did not end for 12 hours. I decided it wasn't worth it. Having gained knowledge in telecommunications, and then in IT consulting, I decided to open my own business. Got knowledge. I will not say that I learned everything, but I received the necessary luggage. Now it's up to me. Now I am leading three projects and in a year I have reached an income level exceeding the salary at the last job. I consider it a success. I was not particularly interested in what employers and, even more so, my colleagues at work would think of me. I got what I needed from them. And what did you give? Yes, he gave his work. That's what. Among other things, he kept good relations with the right people, and this is very important in business.

No. 4. Outsource work that is not your specialty

The most successful companies are the ones that ditched unnecessary services, and only did what they did best. If the company is in marketing, it is not engaged in production. If she knows about inventions but doesn't know how to sell them, she hires a competent outsourcing firm to sell. It is better to sell, but get less than not sell at all. An important rule of a careerist is to hire as many performers as possible who perform functions that are not inherent in you. At the same time, you will focus on those areas where you are stronger than your competitors. At the beginning of your career, if you work, say, in the analytical department (doing economic analysis), you should not get into IT (unless, of course, you want to become a programmer in the future). This is not your job.

Your task is to force the above-mentioned department in a short time and provide you with material for work with the highest quality. You don't need to figure out what problems your programmers have and why a certain code did not work at 5 in the morning, but worked at 6 and lost a piece of data. You don't have to worry about that. In practice, the quality and speed of work depends on your rigidity.

No. 5. Be careful and prudent

As a rule, when you work for someone there is an unspoken rule - do not take the initiative. It ends sadly. People understand that you can be dumped by areas of work that you will pull. And then it’s already inconvenient to refuse. You will be scolded, they say, there is no one besides you. Therefore, it is necessary to be prudent in this matter. It is also important to correctly position yourself in the team and in front of the boss. At first, you shouldn't stand out. About appearance - be careful, you need to smell good. At the same time, there is no need to stand out with bright clothes. They will be jealous. And envy will lead to negative attitudes. You don't need it.

While the essence and the matter are you take knowledge from your colleagues. Do not start a familiar relationship. Be polite, keep up conversations, but never discuss your boss, your colleagues, or gossip. In a team, gossip flies with lightning speed and your reputation can be tarnished. Make the necessary acquaintances with higher-ranking people, get them in the eye, as they can contribute to your vertical advance. Relationship with superiors is a separate topic. There are several types of bosses. And with each of them you need to behave differently. Here are the main ones:

Having made a career from the bottom up

The most difficult type, since it has already passed your way to the end. There is nothing you can do about it. We'll have to work hard. Only selfless work will help you achieve success. It is worthwhile to immediately plan how to move to another department from such a boss, "taking out" the maximum knowledge, since vertical advancement with him will be extremely slow.

Stuck

This guy made a career out of sticking to his patron. Nice type. Beneficial for you. He is predictable, megalomaniac, cunning. At the same time, you are able to take his place. He will robolet in front of you if he finds out that you are connected with the higher authorities.

Upstart

Promoted quickly by chance. I didn’t have time to get embittered during the promotion. You can negotiate with him. Loves employees with dignity who are able to put themselves below him. Appreciates quality work. You can work with him. May help you get promoted.

Blockhead

Stupid zeal is currying favor as a general. The method of "working" with him is length of service. He's an honest idiot and can recommend you for a promotion himself. If it does not work out, you need to make connections with the authorities by him.

Slacker

Usually ranked by connections. It's easier to work with him. Appreciates the work they do for him. With delusions of grandeur. He can be outsmarted. But taking his place is difficult. Therefore, try to make connections past him.

No. 6. Strengthen your composure

It will be tough at first, so endurance is important. You don’t want to hear from any of your friends or relatives at the end of your career: “I didn’t do it, buddy. The gut is thin! " In the very early stages, learn to use people for your own purposes. At first, of course, they will play you. You are a pawn. But with proper construction, everything will change. Shine in front of your superiors. Don't take on unnecessary functionality.

Participate in corporate events (a great chance to make the necessary connections in an informal setting). Make contacts with newly arrived colleagues, as these people can become devoted to you. Master the skills of acting. It is important here to portray accepted emotions in your company. Yes, you really don't give a damn about the photos of your boss in Turkey, but it should never be portrayed if he shows them to you. At one time, I learned how to tell jokes well, working in one of the companies.

It got to the point that at every opportunity, my superiors asked me to tell something new. Using this, they paid attention to me in meetings. It is important not to overdo it, otherwise they will think that the clown will be perceived this way. You need to move to the main thing and shine in front of him, right?

No. 7. Be energetic and don't give up.

Discouragement is a sin. It's said in the Bible. Have you often seen your colleagues dressed in anything at all, with gray eyes that do not represent anything? I often. You shouldn't be like them. This leads to collapse or getting stuck in one place for many years. At one time, I made a plan for every day what to do. The plan was not to do all-all-all of my responsibilities. It was about bringing the maximum benefit to yourself. Let's say you start your morning by learning something new. Time has come to 11-12? You need to go to coffee with your boss, discuss everyday life, tell a joke, find out what is being done at the top. Dinner? You shouldn't dine alone. It is clear that you want to devote this hour to yourself, but it is better to spend it with benefit. Not necessarily with the boss. It can be a new colleague at work, and an important specialist for you (who can be useful to you) from another department, or a nice assistant to the director of the company, which can be useful to you when analyzing the main person. Do not disdain these people. It is advisable to have lunch with the right people 3-4 times a week. After lunch, you can do your immediate duties. As a rule, this is a routine. If there are a lot of them, then it is better to do it in the morning, since it is better to do uninteresting tasks faster in order to free up the day.

Do not forget to leave time to plan the work for the week. Do you smoke? This can also be used for your own purposes. You can learn a lot of important things in smoking rooms. Above all, do not go too often and do not gossip. They will definitely find out about this.

Conclusion

These tips are not a panacea. You yourself know very well that not everything is going according to plan. But it is better to have a plan than not to have one and it is not clear where to go.

For most, job incentives are good wages and career opportunities. Professionalism and experience should be rewarded not only with money, but also with a higher status. How to achieve success in your career: practical advice.

Almost every person dreams of a successful career that will allow him to achieve success in work, to realize himself in professional activities.

But if we talk about it simply, then in fact it is quite difficult to climb the career ladder without ever stumbling.

The fact is that in any job it is not enough just to be responsible, executive and disciplined. You should work effectively, constantly strive for the set goals, and having achieved one of them, do not stop, but follow the other.

Currently, HR specialists have developed seven important, key rules that can greatly facilitate career advancement.

By following these recommendations, a person will learn how to competently and productively manage their career development. Of course, a set of effective rules may have some individual characteristics, but on the whole they are all fairly uniform.

The first rule, which should never be neglected, is that any employee who dreams of reaching career heights must have a sincere desire. As in all other industries, psychology plays an important role in career management.

To achieve clearly set goals, attitude, absolute confidence in oneself, in one's own strengths is of great importance. It is known that only the desire for something is a huge force that allows you to move forward, to act effectively to achieve your goals.

This applies in particular to issues of career advancement. However, it is important to consider that this desire should belong only to the person who wants to reach the desired heights.

There is no need to try to realize other people's ambitions in this matter, this will not lead to a positive result. That is, you may achieve a certain position, but you should not expect moral satisfaction from this process.

A person who is building his career must live in such a way that without a new position he cannot think of his further existence. Career growth should be constant and measured. Unplanned "jumps" up the career ladder will take away strength and not bear fruit.

But here it is worth learning that career growth can never be successful without constant personal development. A person who dreams of becoming a real professional in a particular field, and constantly strives to get new high positions, must independently acquire new knowledge, study the positive experience of his colleagues and managers, and also pay a lot of attention to negative experience.

Even if the company allocates some funds to improve the qualifications of its employees, it is necessary to constantly acquire new knowledge outside the company. Some choose self-education, others regularly attend developmental seminars and trainings in specialized centers. In fact, it is absolutely not important how the training will take place, the main thing is what result it will bring.

The next rule of success in career advancement is to focus on the main goal. Quite often, to get the next position, to which a person has been striving for a long time, you need to pay great attention to your mistakes and successes.

This allows you to concentrate as much as possible on those issues, the solution of which will allow you to build a career. All the employee's merits must certainly be recognized and appreciated. Of course, moving up the career ladder will definitely take a lot of effort. A job like moving up a career ladder will never be easy and quick.

Remember that even a small step up is the result of long-term work. However, you should never try to become a specialist in all areas at once. This will lead to unnecessary diffusion of effort, and will also cause an avalanche of unnecessary and useless activities to collapse. It was from the totality of these statements that psychologists concluded that only concentration can lead to success.

Constantly work to improve efficiency in terms of time management and activities. In this aspect, it will be correct to study the main provisions of time management - a science that allows you to optimize working time as much as possible.

Competently constructed time management makes it possible in the shortest possible time to complete the maximum amount of work most efficiently. Before starting any work, you should draw up a schedule for completing tasks, and it is not advisable to deviate from it. This self-organization allows you to work extremely efficiently.

Any business you start is always worth bringing to the end. Even a small job should not be abandoned halfway, because this will be the first step on the path to failure. You need to start a new business only when the previous one is completely completed. Thus, it will be possible to correctly distribute resources.

Some people have been given this trait since childhood, and even in their school years they will not start a new one if the old one is not read to the last page. But if you do not have such a skill, then you need not give up, but develop this habit. At the very beginning, it may seem difficult, but over time, this science will become easier and simpler. The ability to go to the end will help not only in your career, but also in all areas of life.

Learn effective stress management techniques. This factor is important and therefore should never be neglected. No matter how effective the work is, stress, mistakes and failures will still arise from time to time. It is very important that all work-related excitements should never be brought home.

In addition, you cannot feel sorry for yourself, this will only aggravate the situation, but will not solve it. Any problem needs to be solved, and quickly and efficiently, and not to groom it. This approach is correct, and this is confirmed by many years of experience in psychological practices in management. By following these simple rules, you will quickly move up the career ladder.

The career ladder is the path that a person needs to walk. This is something like a ladder, along which all the steps must be passed.

How to climb the career ladder quickly

Any specific position and feature of the company's work consists of the likelihood and stages of career advancement.

Here's an example of a manager for career advancement:

Have power. At first, this will turn out to be insignificant, for example, to monitor the work of a couple of ordinary workers, but when they have successfully performed the assigned functions, you can expand the powers.

To gain power you need:

  • be more active, in particular if there is top management;
  • in any case, be aware of the work and actively participate in the debate;
  • promote yourself as an executive and responsible employee.

Properly plan and disperse the time - try to do all the other functions on time, in no case should you be late.

Put forward your own thoughts and try to get their approval.

For these purposes, you will need:

  • prepare everything to the smallest detail;
  • willingly give answers to all questions about your own plan. An important rule: do not talk about an idea if the likelihood of its effective implementation is a huge question or, most likely, there will be huge difficulties in its implementation.

Get along well with the leadership, here you need to:

  • you always need to communicate with respect;
  • in no case should you discuss your boss with other employees;
  • speak words of praise to the management;
  • in any case, try to completely do any kind of assignment. In addition, to quickly move up the career ladder, you need to monitor your appearance. It is necessary to think about whether it corresponds to the company, status, age category and much more.

What qualities must be possessed

  • Striving for improvement. First, we add that a person should have a desire to get some kind of position. In addition, you need not only to desire the given, but to do everything in order to achieve the desired goal. Psychology in every position is of the utmost importance, since with a great attitude you can carry out any work on time and simply, but with a bad one you can do everything upside down. So you can successfully move up the career ladder if the mood is correct.
  • Professional growth. To get a high position, any of us must have the appropriate skills and abilities. This is due to the fact that good work consists of constant responsibility and hard work, for this reason, in order to do it reliably, you need to have some knowledge. For this reason, people who are trying to climb up the career ladder all the time must engage in self-improvement and increase in their skills in a particular area for a long time. Only in this case can you prove to the company's management that an employee can meet all the necessary standards in order to perform certain tasks. In this case, the increase will turn out to be fast, since in many cases the leaders of various companies put enterprising people in leadership positions who are constantly looking for something. With such persons, you can constantly and reliably develop a company that will be more effective.
  • Work constantly. Climbing the career ladder is not granted by itself, for this reason, a person striving to become a leader must constantly and reliably carry out work. But you also don’t need to work very hard, as it can be very convenient for specific workers. They can start transferring merit to themselves, and a completely different person does the work. For this reason, it is necessary to rationally evaluate all the work performed in the company, since it is important that it is needed and provided to this particular employee.
  • Competent distribution of the working day. Another important principle, thanks to which you can climb the career ladder, is the correct allocation of the length of time. When working, it is constantly spent on completing the most important tasks, moreover, if you plan ahead, then you can get a very large amount of work than, if not look at the length of time at all. But do not forget to devote an hour of your time to rest, as as a result of constant work without rest, you will work less efficiently.
  • Consistent implementation of tasks. Most people try to do a lot of work, thus showing management that they are skillful and can do a lot of tasks. But you can also get a lot of started, but unfinished work. 6. Resistance to stressful situations. It must be remembered that any type of work consists of numerous stresses that arise from various moments. Basically, they arise in the case when the management was unable to evaluate the work, or in the case when the task was performed illiterately or within the specified period.

How to get around rivals

In the struggle for advancement, it is necessary in any case to try to become better than opponents.

Here you can use the following tips:

  • competently talk about your own reasons;
  • no need to be afraid to talk about shortcomings;
  • demonstrate how to make a decision more effectively in a given situation.

To achieve the desired goals, you must:

  • constantly ask questions about incomprehensible questions;
  • in any case, get help from top management;
  • honestly point out your own shortcomings and try to correct them as quickly as possible in the future.

How not to make mistakes or stumble

  • "Who owns the information, he owns the world." Try to learn more about the people around you. It is worth preparing for the meeting well in advance and even if the conversation only lasts a minute.
  • Give your own subordinates more freedom. Try to distribute functions among the employees provided to you in such a way that everyone can show themselves.
  • Trust the workers. With a positive attitude, you can do the extraordinary. Thanks to faith in people, one can gain strength, can remove restrictions, and enable him to develop his own potential.
  • Believe in yourself. We, unfortunately, perfectly remember our own mistakes than winnings. And for this reason, we can underestimate ourselves. And the whole environment is able to dissuade you from any project than to provide support. And for effective career advancement, you need the strength that comes from believing in yourself. Collect your own victories. In difficult times, you can have support from the winnings, which are recorded in your journal.
  • Find hidden opportunities. Knowledge of the important points of the state budget helped in the career of the famous politician. Explore the latest technologies that provide us with the PC and the World Wide Web, be able to improve your abilities in the work you are working on. Go to a variety of courses.
  • Become sociable. You've probably already seen that most positions are held by outgoing people. They are able to become sociable with anyone. Write down all the cell numbers that are provided to you, collect business cards, you do not need to be afraid to talk to strangers. Go to exhibitions.
  • Meet people who know more than you. Through curiosity, you will achieve a lot.
  • Don't just focus on your own company. Today the main player in business is a strategy called "Win-Win", that is, no losers.
  • Watch your manners. Be flawless. Go to meetings as quickly as possible, dress in business style.
  • There is no need to retreat from your own dreams.

Successful people and losers differ from each other by perseverance in achieving their own goals.

How not to be overwhelmed

In order not to let yourself be broken, remember one important point, if you fully embody yourself in a certain position and are, to some extent, an indispensable employee, then at first the management will not move you forward, since it is unprofitable for them.

There is no need to be zealous, but at the same time, we do not forget to serve the bosses in such a way that in a delicate way we mark the mistakes of employees.

Be more proactive by telling management that you can communicate throughout the entire production process. For an idea not to fail, you don't have to be dangerous to your own boss.

The service ladder is adventurism and perseverance, when you need to use all your own charm and ability to negotiate with other people.

We all know people with attractive careers. They are entrusted with the most interesting tasks, they are given powers that colleagues do not have, they are the first to be promoted. There is no coincidence here. Luck comes when opportunities match readiness.

Chances are, a person with an enviable career is working very hard to move in the right direction. And one of the main components of such a movement is the manifestation of courage.

To move decisively up the career ladder, regularly and, if necessary, assertively, do the following:

Instead of waiting for an opportunity to move up the career ladder, find it yourself. To get started, look for opportunities within your company and, if there are none, expand your search area beyond it. (If you expect professional prospects to come to you on their own, then you don't have the courage.)

Ask your boss for new responsibilities and functions. Once you have a new challenge or reward, learn, improve, expand your skills, and develop your talents as hard as you can. (If you’re not looking for opportunities to learn and develop, then you don’t have the courage.)

Don't sit in the shade. Make sure everyone knows what a dedicated and passionate employee you are, what a leader you are. Be discreet, but don't be discouraged. (If you remain in the shadows, then you do not have courage.)

If you feel stuck in your career, act immediately and purposefully to get back on the road to success. It is unlikely that anyone will notice (or worry) that your career dynamics are not aligned with your intentions. (If you are not at the helm, then you do not have courage.)

If you feel ready and deserving, feel free to ask your boss for a promotion or find another job that will be a step or two ahead of your current position. Don't expect others to recognize your willingness to be promoted - show them that you are ripe for more by acting and demonstrating your ability. (If you have not done this for a long time, then you do not have courage.)

You should have a plan for career advancement and stages of promotion. If you have one, make sure you take the time to implement it. (If you do not go assertively towards your goal, then you do not have courage)

If you don't like your job or if you want something different, take action to make a difference. Define your preferences and stick to them. (If you’re not seeking constructive change, then you don’t have the courage.) A healthy, courageous career means doing work that you truly enjoy and want to do. You also know exactly where you want to work, and you have a plan for how to get there. You are not shy of opportunities that enrich knowledge, skills and experience, you are not afraid to take on more responsibility, including financial ones - on the contrary, you are purposefully looking for such opportunities. You get a promotion or a raise because you ask for it. When you find a problem, you call attention to it or solve it. And if difficulties arise? You become part of the solution, not the problem.
