Nikolai Nikolaevich was born into a family of a military man in Ukraine, in the village of Bogdanovka, Kirovograd region, where fate threw his father after the war. His mother during the war was an active participant in the partisan movement, fought in the legendary unit of General Kovpak, where she met her future husband. In 1950, the family moved to Balashikha, near Moscow, from where Nikolai Nikolayevich's father went to the front. After the war, my father worked in the Ministry of Defense, then in the General Staff and the Ministry of Foreign Trade, my mother was a mathematics teacher. Nikolai's parents dreamed that their son would become a military man, but after graduating from school in 1965, he unexpectedly entered the 2nd Medical Institute, the pediatric faculty. In the cycle of television programs “To Help the Practitioner”, Nikolai Nikolayevich was so interested in the story of Academician Vyacheslav Aleksandrovich Tabolin that the young man decided to enter only the medical institute. It so happened that it was Vyacheslav Alexandrovich who became for Nikolai Nikolayevich not only a teacher, but practically a second father for life.

In the 3rd year, Nikolai Nikolayevich began to study in a scientific circle, after student classes, he went to the cathedral scientific laboratory at the Filatov hospital, where his second, practical part of his studies took place, it ended late in the evening, he often had to return home on the last train. It was the work in the circle that made it possible to truly feel like a future doctor. After graduating from the medical institute, Nikolai Nikolaevich received a referral to the Sosnovsky district of the Tambov region, to the district children's hospital, a year later he returned to Moscow, where he went to work in the city maternity hospital No. 12. In 1973, Academician Tabolin suggested that Nikolai Nikolayevich move to his clinic for the position of senior laboratory assistant.

In 1976, Nikolai Nikolaevich Volodin defended his Ph.D. thesis, after which he became an assistant to Academician Tabolin. At this time, he begins to work in a specialized children's hospital No. 8 in Moscow, which provided assistance to women with miscarriage and nursed premature babies. Then it was the only such institution in the country, and perhaps in the world. In those years, the mortality rate of newborns in intensive care units reached 80%. Nikolai Nikolaevich became one of those scientists who began to fight this horrifying statistics, developing methods for providing medical care to children with low body weight (from 15 to a kilogram), then, from the 80s, with extremely low weight - less than a kilogram. The topic of Nikolai Nikolayevich's doctoral dissertation in 1989 was research on nursing children born prematurely with extremely low body weight. As a result of this work, methods have been created today that allow nursing 78% of children born with a weight of 500 grams to a kilogram. A great merit in the success of perinatal medicine in our country belongs to the Russian Association of Perinatal Medicine Specialists, which was established in 1994 by Viktor Vasilyevich Gavryushov, a year after his death, Nikolai Nikolaevich Volodin became the president of the association. Now this organization unites more than 1500 specialists from the subjects of the Russian Federation. For 13 years, the association has developed approaches and standards for the treatment of newborns, thanks to which infant mortality has decreased by almost 50% over the past 10 years.

In 1993, Nikolai Nikolayevich was invited to work as the head of the department of educational institutions of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Russia. Konda decided in 1997 to unite science and education together in one structure of the Ministry of Health, he became deputy head of the Department of Research and Educational Medical Institutions. In those years, there was a real threat of destruction of medical education in our country. It was planned to transfer healthcare from federal to local funding, to unite all medical universities into a single structure, they began to close pediatric faculties, etc. Nikolai Nikolaevich was one of those who did everything to preserve the unique medical universities in Russia. From 1999 to 2004, Nikolai Nikolayevich was the director of the Department of Educational Medical Institutions and Personnel Policy of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. In 2004, he headed one of the most important departments in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, which included pharmaceutical activities, ensuring human well-being, as well as science and education, and for the last year and a half he worked as deputy head of the Federal Agency for Health and Social Development.

At the end of 2007, Nikolai Nikolayevich was elected to the post of rector of the Russian State Medical University. It was in this university that the elite of medicine, first of the Soviet Union, then Russia, was brought up for many years. Nikolai Nikolaevich has a lot of work to do, it so happened that the university does not have its own clinics, and in order for the university to exist in the new conditions, it needs them. The new rector will have to solve this problem at the level of the government of the Russian Federation. The university has great potential, in order not to lose, but to increase everything accumulated, Nikolai Nikolayevich's talent as a leader and his great diligence are needed. Despite the high positions and great organizational work that Nikolai Nikolayevich has been doing for many years, he first of all remains a brilliant scientist and a real doctor. In 2000 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences, and in 2004 he became an academician. Nikolai Nikolayevich is the author of 400 scientific papers, 12 textbooks, 23 monographs, 14 inventions, he received 2 patents. The scientific interests of Academician Volodin are primarily related to the problems of perinatal medicine, improving the quality of medical care for high-risk pregnant women and their newborns, including those with extremely low body weight. He is developing methods that allow restoring the breathing of newborns, such as artificial lung ventilation, solving the problems of damage to the central nervous system of children and perinatal immunology. It is very important that in recent years, under the leadership of Nikolai Nikolayevich, various specialists have been combining their efforts to solve the problems of perinatal medicine. So, on the basis of the Perinatology Center, a department of perinatal surgery was created.

From 1990 to the present, Nikolai Nikolayevich has been heading the Department of Neonatology of the Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education of the Russian State Medical University. Under his scientific supervision, 28 candidate and 6 doctoral dissertations have been defended; in 2008, three more of his students are expected to defend doctoral dissertations.

Nikolai Nikolayevich has three daughters. The eldest, Masha, is a talented lawyer, she recently had a son, Yegor. The middle daughter, Daria, graduated with honors from the Moscow Dental University, was a presidential scholarship holder, had an internship in England, and now she is actively engaged in scientific work. The youngest daughter, Annushka, is still quite a baby.

In his student years, Nikolai Nikolayevich was fond of sports, went in for tourism. His favorite routes were rafting on mountain rivers, the highest achievement - the fifth category of difficulty - the Kazyr River, Eastern Sayan Mountains. In his youth, he was a candidate master of sports in skiing, a member of the Institute's team. Now, on rare days of rest, he sometimes manages to go skiing in the mountains.

Nikolai Nikolaevich Volodin is a man of amazing fate, a well-known organizer of health care, a brilliant scientist who raised excellent students, a doctor, as they say, from God, who devoted his whole life to creating an amazing science, perhaps the most humane even among all medical sciences - perinatal medicine, which helps to appear into the world of babies.

Rector of the Pirogov Medical University Nikolai Volodin about his dismissal.

The scandal around the medical university flared up after Izvestia published an article about strange lists of applicants. The management of the university began to check after the appeal of our newspaper. Now the dismissed rector of the Russian National Research Medical University. N.I. Pirogov (RNIMU), Nikolai Volodin, in an exclusive interview with Izvestia, outlined his point of view on what is happening.

- Do you already know about the order of the Ministry of Health and Social Development?

Yes. Signed up this morning. And he did it without hesitation, since this is the decision of a higher authority. The mood is wonderful. Even my shoulders straightened from the load that I carried. And carried - worthy.

- Previously, you said that you were not going to write a letter of resignation?

The founder of the university, the Ministry of Health and Social Development, believes that I am not coping with my duties. So the founder is right. This is the decision of the higher authority.

- What did the internal investigation show - where did the "ghosts" appear in the lists of applicants?

Neither I nor the members of the selection committee, who are now under suspicion, are not to blame. We have become hostages of a situation that was fabricated by a certain group of people in a highly professional and very competent manner. They had "their hands" in the selection committee. One person was enough there, and he took advantage of the informal atmosphere in the commission. In the evenings, this employee introduced fictitious names in portions.

Why didn't anyone notice the trick before? Until recently, you have argued that this is impossible.

Everything was very clean. But we ourselves have identified these "ghosts". I remember well the morning of August 2, when you came to me with a letter from the programmer Simak, who noticed an anomaly. Yes, I then said that this could not be. But when you left, he gave the task to check everything. We counted all night. And at nine in the morning on August 3, 626 names were already thrown out of the list. It was we who announced the new rating of applicants and reported everything to the minister. It was we who called all the guys, and they showed up for enrollment. And not a single person from the applicants of this year was injured.

- Now the press says the amount of the bribe that was paid for admission to your university - 400 thousand rubles.

It's just a bluff, wildness. Well, let them bring me at least one who paid. Why such bribes when you can come with your scores to the admissions office and quite officially for 80-90 thousand - depending on the faculty - to conclude a contract for training. And immediately become a student.

- Has the employee-saboteur already been identified?

It is now very difficult to define it. Of course, I have my suspicions. If the competent authorities ask, I will express my point of view. This whole campaign had one goal - to undermine the authority of the rector. This I declare to you officially. It's unreal - 626 names of "ghosts" among the applicants. Someone really wanted us to fail the reception plan.

- Do you have many enemies?

In 2007, I came to the university, which rented out 10.5 thousand square meters. m of space. There was a fish shop, baths, confectionery shops, restaurants, bowling alleys, billiard rooms, car services, parking lots, toy factories, and a place for entertainment worked in the student hostel. All communal kitchens were rented to the Konkovsky market. And now there is none of that. I threw out this rubbish. We have been suing the tenants for a year now to get them to repay their debts.

- That is, those whose financial interests you have infringed can be involved here?

Not only. For many, I am an uncomfortable figure. My students now walk along the cleanest corridors. And before everything was spit, filthy. No one smokes in the building now. Since September 1, a 200 m zone around the university has been declared non-smoking.

The audiences are completely different. Without undue modesty, I can say that in Russia there is no other university of this level in terms of development today. We are in seventh place in the ranking of scientific publishing. And in 13th place in the citation index after Moscow State University, Leningrad State University and 5-6 other universities. We have equipment that none of the universities in Russia currently has. In the list of 29 national universities, the only medical one is ours. We have done all this in the last three years. And now there is an undermining of an institution that should be set as an example.

- Won't you fight?

With whom? I was open to all journalists. What is shown on television - this abomination, this dirty trick? Nobody wants to just figure it out and think.
