Psalter 17 kathisma memorial in Russian. Archpriest Grigory Razumovsky. Explanation of the Holy Book of Psalms - Kathisma XVII

From the entire Psalter, at first glance - primarily because of its large volume - Psalm 119 is perceived in a special way: why is this text being read - extensive, monotonous and difficult for a modern reader?

The most common answer is for the most valuable Christian moral lesson, which was deeply appreciated by Blessed Augustine himself.

Comparing this song with other psalm chapters, he called those the stars scattered across the sky, and this one the midday sun. It is no coincidence that it is with these words that it is customary to remember the souls of loved ones who have left this world.

How to spend 40 days after a relative's death

Orthodox Christians believe that at forty the soul of the deceased visits loved ones for the last time, before being brought before God's judgment. She needs encouragement and guidance - there is still time for enlightenment and transformation to eternal life.

This is helped by the church memorial service, in the fifth voice of which the twelfth verse of Psalm 118 sounds in the chorus: "Blessed are you, Lord, teach me your commands."

All relatives of the departed are supposed to do good deeds to save the departed (donating lean food to the temple, buying a candle, giving alms to the beggar).

It is allowed to gather at the memorial table, remembering the deceased, but this action is necessary for those who remain, and not for the one whose soul has already left the body. Alcohol will weaken the spiritual connection of those present with the traveling soul - it is not needed at the commemoration.

It is good to pray together and have conversations that encourage reflection on the meaning of life and death. The priests especially recommend reading the 17th kathisma, which fully contains the 118th Psalm.

The meaning of the 17th kathisma from the Psalter

A lengthy song is dedicated to the Christian's understanding of the great significance of God for him. The lyrical hero shares the gracious and intimate response of his soul to the Law of the Lord - that is why this is not only a deeply personal prayer, but also pure beautiful poetry.

Almost every verse contains a new epithet for God's word: behavior, judgment, command, testimony, statutes, revelations, path, decree, law. It awakens in the soul of the singing a wealth of feelings and experiences: joy, love, worship, thirst, zealous striving for truth and goodness, frankness, anxious feelings about one's own dignity before the Creator and at the same time the daring to ask him for protection and enlightenment.

The most frequent word here is "I": this is the revelation of the heart touched by the Divine and convinced of the great goodness of the order He creates. The interpretation of kathisma recreates the true spiritual practice of a Christian. And for whom is it more important to touch her, if not for a soul preparing to appear before Heavenly Father?

Text 17 of the Kathisma from the Psalter, read from the departed

To the Russian reader, the text seems compositionally incoherent, because it is a translation from the ancient language of the Semitic group. The piece was conceived as an acrostic.

In the original, every eighth line of 22 sections began sequentially with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This idea is not accidental: after all, human language is perhaps the most appropriate and all-encompassing metaphor for the subject of the work.

How to read the 17th kathisma correctly

It is better to get your blessing from a clergyman for business. It is better to speak the text out loudly. It is allowed to sit during the performance.

First, prayers are read, laid down before the beginning of the reading of the Psalter.

Kathisma itself is divided into three parts - statues or glories: this is the moment of glorification of the Holy Trinity at the Liturgy.

Verses 1, 2,12, 22, 25, 29, 37, 58, 66, 72, 73 and 88 are read from chorus about the repose of the soul: "Rest, O Lord, the soul of your deceased servant (your servant)."

Lines 92 and 93 are repeated three times - and again the funeral chorus.

The same chorus accompanies lines 94, 107, 114, 121, 131, 132, 133, 142, 153, 159, 163, and 170 (the chorus should be read after each line). The last two, 175 and 176, are again performed three times and again the chorus for the deceased slave.

In the finale, the established prayers are heard - "according to the XVII kathisma".

All of them are in the prayer book, which should be bought in the church shop of an Orthodox church or monastery.

Days of special commemoration of the dead in Orthodoxy

In addition to the Akathist about the repose of all the dead, the "Immaculate" psalm is a universal text for all memorial days, including parenting Saturdays... There are nine of these in Orthodoxy. They are designated by the name of the closest for each people - parents.

These ones days when you should remember the dead, order services (in advance, preferably in the evening, especially if you cannot attend the funeral service), and pray at home:

  • Ecumenical: Trinity (before the Holy Trinity) and Myasopustnaya (a week before Lent);
  • on the pre-Easter Forty days: the sixth day of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks;
  • private: nine days after Bright Sunday - Radunitsa;
  • Memorial Day for Orthodox Warriors - September 11;
  • Dmitrievskaya Saturday before November 8 - the day of memory of the great martyr Dmitry Solunsky;
  • Commemoration of the victims in the Great World War II on the day of the Great Victory.

It is very convenient to purchase orthodox calendar for the coming year, all fasts, days of remembrance of the dead, all holidays and much more are indicated there.

Conclusion

This part of the Psalter is able to give the thoughtful reader a truly inexhaustible spiritual experience... No wonder many priests and spiritual leaders of Christianity recommended reading the seventeenth kathisma every day.

Friends, the day is coming when believers especially remember the dead: relatives, friends, neighbors, parishioners from their church, enemies, finally. In general, all:Orthodox and unbaptized. Only the closest people pray for the unbaptized and suicides with special prayers. It is also good to give alms for them. This can be done even by strangers who are not indifferent to such a suicide.
I will not talk now about how much our prayer is needed by the dead: someone knows himself, others will be able to read about it in the next posts of my diary (I am quoting little by little the very interesting work of Hieromonk Seraphim Rose "The Soul After Death", in which these questions will be considered in detail); still others can buy a corresponding book in any temple and study it on their own. I will only say that Orthodox Christians pray for the dead, of course, not only on specially designated days. It's just that on such days, you need to pray more for the dead.

So I bring to your attention a passage from the Psalter (there is a part in the Bible with this title), accompanied by special prayers. The Orthodox call this passage the 17th kathisma. The 17th kathisma is read in the days of special commemoration of the departed (like the coming day). Another 17 kathisma is read by caring relatives for 40 days after a person's death, so that it would be easier for him to get to God. It will be beautiful if you have the patience to read the 17th kathisma this Saturday for deceased relatives and friends.

Psalm 119

Blessedness of blamelessness on the way, walking in the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who test His testimonies, they will seek Him with all their hearts, who do not commit iniquity in His paths. Thou hast commanded Thy commandments to preserve exceedingly. that my way may be corrected, thy justifications may be preserved. Then I will not be ashamed, always pay attention to all Your commandments. Let us confess to You in the righteousness of our hearts, always teach us the destinies of Thy righteousness. I will keep Your justification: do not leave me to the brink. How will the youngest path correct his way? Always keep Thy words. With all my heart I seek You, do not take me away from Your commandments. Thy words are hidden in my heart, that I will not sin with Thee. Blessed are you, Lord, teachme by thy justification. My mouth has proclaimed all the destinies of Thy lips. On the way of Thy testimonies we shall delight, as for all riches. In Thy commandments I will mock, and I will understand Thy ways. In Thy justification I will learn, I will not forget Thy words. Render to Thy servant: live me, and I will keep Thy words. open my eyes, And I understand the wonders of your law. I am a stranger on earth: do not hide your commandments from me. Love my soul and desire your fate for all time. Thou hast forbidden the proud: curse those who deviate from Thy commandments. Ward off diarrhea and humiliation from me, like Thy demands of the dates. For the princes sit and slander me, but Thy servant mocks in Thy justification. For Thy testimonies are my teaching, and advise me Thy justifications. My soul clings to the earth, live me according to your word. You have proclaimed my ways, and thou hast heard me: teach me in Thy justification. Give me understanding the way of Thy justifications, and I will mock in Thy wonders. My soul is weary from despondency, trust me in Thy words. Leave the way of unrighteousness behind me, and have mercy on me by Thy law. The path of truth you will, and have not forgotten your fate. Clung to thy vision, O Lord, do not put me to shame. The path of Thy commandments has flowed, ever broadened my heart. Give me the law, O Lord, the way of Thy justifications, and I will seek and take it out. Give me understanding, and I will try your law, and I will keep it also with all my heart. Instruct me on the path of Thy commandments, as I delight. Incline my heart into Thy testimonies, and not into covetousness. Turn my eyes away, do not see the cyets, live me in Your way. Deliver your word to your servant for your fear. Take away my reproach, hedgehogs, like Thy fate is good. Behold, I have longed for Thy commandments; live me in Thy righteousness. And may Thy mercy come to me, O Lord, Thy salvation according to Thy word, and I answer the word that reproaches me, as if I trusted in Thy words. And do not take away from my lips the word is true to the brightest, as if in your fate hopes. And I will keep Your law, I will take out, in the age and in the age of the century .. And I walk in breadth, like Your commandments, exacting, and the words of Your dates before the king, and not ashamed. And byLearn in Thy commandments, even more than beloved more deeply: and I lifted my hand to Thy commandments, even as I loved, and mocked in Thy justification. Remember Thy words to Thy servant; Thou hast given their hope. Then comfort me in my humility, as Thy word live on me. Gordia transgressed the law to evil, but they did not deviate from Thy law. Remember Thy fate from time immemorial, O Lord, and comforted. I was pleased with the sinner who forsake your law. Peta byahu me Your justification in the place of my arrival. Remember in the night your name O Lord, and we preserve thy law. This is quick for me, as for the justification of Thy demands. Thou art my part, Lord: reh, keep Thy law. Pray in Thy face with all my heart: have mercy on me according to Thy word. Thou hast thought Thy ways, And bring back my nos in Thy testimonies. Prepare yourself and do not hesitate to keep the threads of Your commandments. Already the sinner has pledged to me, and have not forgotten Thy law. Midnight east, confess to you about the fate of your righteousness. I am a partaker to all who fear You, and to those who keep Your commandments. Thy mercy, O Lord, fill the earth; teach me with Thy justification. You have done goodness with Thy servant, O Lord, according to Thy word. Teach me goodness and punishment and reason, as if we command your faith. First, do not even humble ourselves, I have sinned, for this sake we have preserved Thy word. Thou art good, Lord, and by Thy goodness teach me Thy justification. Multiply the iniquity of the proud for me, but with all my heart I will test Your commandments. Be damp, as their heart is milky, and I have taught thy law. It is good for me, as thou humbled me, as if I may learn to justify Thy-them. The law of Thy mouth is good to me, more than thousands of gold and silver.

(Three times)

Lord have mercy.(Three times)

Thy hand create me and create me, give me reason, and I will learn Thy commandment. Those who fear You will see me and rejoice, as if in Your words, hopes. Ra-zumeh, Lord, as the truth of Your fate, and truly you humbled me. Be Thy mercy, let Thy servant comfort me according to Thy word. May Your bounties come to me, and I will live, as Your law is my teaching. Let the pride be ashamed, as the unrighteous lawlessness is against me, but I will scoff at Thy commandments. Let those who fear You and those who know Your testimonies convert me. Let my heart be blameless in Thy justification, for I will not be ashamed. My soul disappears into Thy salvation, on Thy words, hopes. My eyes disappeared into Thy word, saying: When will you comfort me? There was nothing like a fur on a slate, I have not forgotten Your excuses. Koliko are the days of your servant? When will you create judgment from those who persecute me? Thou hast told me the transgressors of mockery, but not like Thy law, O Lord. All Thy commandments are true; unrighteously chasing me, help me. Vmele not a cup for me on earth, but I do not leave Thy commandments. Live me according to Thy mercy, and I will keep the testimonies of Thy lips. For ever, Lord, Thy word is in Heaven. Thy truth to generation and generation. Thou hast founded the earth, and abides. The day abides by Thy discipline: as all work is done for Thee. As if it were not for your law, my teaching was, then you would have perished in my humility. I will never forget Thy justifications, for in them Thou didst revive me.

[Wednesday]

Thine am I, save me: as for Thy justifications for seeking.I am waiting for a sinner to destroy me, the dates are Your sound. Every end has seen the end, Thy commandment is broad. If we love Thy law, O Lord, my teaching is all day long. Much more my enemy has made me wise, Thy commandment, as in my age is. More than all those who teach me, minds, as if your dates are my teaching. More than a hundredretz mind, like Thy commandments are exacting. From every way of deceit, restrain my feet, as if I will keep Thy words. We have not deviated from Thy destinies, as Thou hast made us lawful. How sweet is thy word to my throat: more than honey with my mouth. From Thy commandments of the mind: for this sake have we hated every path of unrighteousness. My foot-lamp is Thy law, and light to my paths. Swear, and set them up to preserve the fate of Thy righteousness. Humble yourself to the brink, Lord, live me according to your word. Free my lips, please, Lord, and teach me Your destinies. I will take out my soul into Thy hand, and I have not forgotten Thy law. Putting sinners in a snare for me, and from Thy commandments I did not go astray. In the inheritance of Thy testimonies forever, as the joy of my heart is the essence. Incline my heart, make Thy justifications in the age of retribution. Hate of the law, but your law is your beloved. Thou art my helper and my intercessor, in thy words of hope. Escape from me that deceit, and I will test the commandments of my God. Step on me according to Thy word, and I will live, and do not put me to shame because of my expectation. Help me, and I will be saved, and I will learn in Thy justification I will take out. Thou hast despised all that depart from Thy justifications, for their thinking is unrighteous. All sinful earth is transgressing without food, for this, for the sake of the beloved, Thy testimonies. Nail Thy fear to my flesh: I fear Thy fate. Co-create judgment and truth, do not betray me to those who offend me. Receive Thy servant for good, lest pride be slandered against me. My eyes disappear into Thy salvation and into the word of Thy righteousness: do with Thy servant according to Thy mercy, and teach me about Thy justification. Thy servant am I: fool me, and let us see Thy testimonies. Time to create the Lord-devi: destroy Your law. For this, for the sake of the beloved, Thy commandments are greater than gold and topazium. For this reason, go to all Thy commandments, hate every path of unrighteousness. Wonderful are Thy dates: for this reason I have been tried, my soul. The manifestation of Thy words enlightens and admonishes babies. My mouth was opened, and my spirit was attracted, like Thy commandments desires.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, both now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, God.(Three times).

Lord have mercy.(Three times)

In male I have not died on earth, but I have not forsaken Thy commandments. Live me according to Thy mercy, and I will keep the information of Thy mouth.

Thine am I, save me: as for Thy justifications for seeking. If you are waiting for a sinner, destroy me, your witnesses are minds. Every end has seen the end, Thy commandment is broad. If we love Thy law, O Lord, my teaching is all day long. Much more my enemy has made me wise, Thy commandment, as in my age is. More than all those who teach me, minds, as if your dates are my teaching. Even the elder understands, like Thy commandments are exacting. From every way of deceit, restrain my feet, as if I will keep Thy words. You have not deviated from your destinies, as you have ordained me. How sweet is thy word to my throat: more than honey with my mouth. From Thy commandments of the mind: for this sake have we hated every path of unrighteousness. The lamp of my feet is Thy law, I am the light of my paths. Swear, and set them up to preserve the fate of Thy righteousness. Humble yourself to the brink, Lord, live me according to your word. The free lips of mine are well pleased, Lord, and teach me your destinies. I will take out my soul into Thy hand, and I have not forgotten Thy law. I have laid the sinner's net for me, and have not gone astray from Thy commandments. The inheritance of Thy dates for ever, as the joy of my heart is the essence. Incline my heart, make Thy justifications in the age of retribution. Hate of the law, but your law is your beloved. Thou art my helper and my Protector, in Thy words, hopes. Depart from me that deceit, and I will try the commandments of my God. Nail Thy fear into my flesh: for Thy fate we have feared. Having done judgment and righteousness, do not betray me to those who offend me. Receive Thy servant for good, lest pride be slandered against me. My eyes disappear into Thy salvation and into the word of Thy righteousness: do with Thy servant according to Thy mercy, and teach me about Thy justification. Thy servant I am: give me understanding, and we will see Thy testimonies. Time to make the Lord: destroy Your law. For this, for the sake of the beloved, Thy commandments are greater than gold and topazium. For this reason, for the sake of all Thy commandments, direct, every path of unrighteousness hated. Wonderful are Thy dates: for this reason I have been tried, my soul. The manifestation of Thy words enlightens and admonishes infants. My mouth was opened, and my spirit was attracted, as if commanding Thy desires.

Look upon me and have mercy on me, according to the judgment of those who love your name. Direct my feet according to Thy word, and let not all iniquity possess me. Deliver me from the slander of mankind, and I will keep Your commandments. Enlighten Thy face on Thy servant, and teach me in Thy justification. The outflow of water is out of my eyes: they have not kept Thy law. Thou art righteous, O Lord, and righteous judge Thy. Thou hast commanded the righteousness of thy testimony, and the truth is exceedingly great. Thy jealousy has melted me: as if Thy words were forgotten, foil mine. Thy word has been kindled exceedingly, and Thy servant shall love him. The Youngest I am and am humbled: I have not forgotten Thy justifications. Thy righteousness is righteousness for ever, and Thy law is truth. Sorrows and needs finding me: Thy commandments are my teaching. The righteousness of Thy appointment for ever: give me understanding, and I will live. Cry with all my heart, hear me, O Lord, I will seek your justification. Call Ti, save me, and I will preserve your testimonies. Preceded in indignation and cries, in Thy words of hope. Preceding my eyes in the morning, learn from Thy word. Hear my voice, O Lord, according to Thy mercy: according to Thy fate live me. The one who persecutes me with iniquity is approaching; he has departed from Thy law. Thou art near, O Lord, and all Thy path is truth. First known from Thy testimonies, as in the ages I founded. See my humility, and change me, for you have not forgotten your law. Judge my judgment, and deliver me: live me by thy word. Salvation is far from the sinner, for Thy justifications have not been sought. Thy bounties are many, Lord, live me according to Thy fate. Men who drive me out and who are cold: have not deviated from Thy testimonies. Videh uncomprehending and in truth: as if I did not keep Thy words. See, as Thy commandments of our beloved: Lord, according to Thy mercy live me. The beginning of Thy words is truth, and in the age of all the destiny of Thy righteousness. The princes drove me to the tune: and my heart was afraid of Thy words. I will rejoice in Thy words, for gaining much greed. They hate unrighteousness and hate them: but thy law is of lovers. In seven days, we praise Thee about the fate of Thy righteousness. Peace to many who love your law, and they will not be tempted. The hopes of Thy salvation, O Lord, and Thy commandments of our beloved. Save my soul, Your dates, and I love you dearly. Keep Thy commandments and Thy testimonies, for all my way is before Thee, O Lord. May my prayer draw near to Thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to Thy word. May my petition come before Thee, O Lord, deliver me according to Thy word. My singing will burp out of my mouth, always teach me in Thy justification. My tongue speaks out Thy words, for all Thy commandments are righteous. Let Thy hand be a hedgehog to save me, as Thy commandments are willed. Thy salvation is desired, O Lord, and Thy law is my teaching. My soul will live, and will praise Thee: and Your destinies will help me. Lost, like a lost sheep: seek Thy servant, as Thy commandments have not forgotten.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, both now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.
Alleluia, halleluia, halleluia, glory to You God. (Three times)
Lord have mercy (Three times)

Even so, be merciful to that, and faith, even in Thee instead of deeds, and with Thy saints, as Generous, rest: there is no man, who will live and not sin. But Thou art One besides all sin, and Thy truth, the truth forever, and Thou art the One God of mercies and mercy, and love for mankind, and we glorify Thee, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever and ever. Amen.

V Orthodox Church Since ancient times, there has been a pious custom of reading the Psalms for the dead by the believers themselves. The Book of Psalms of the Prophet King David is part of Old Testament and consists of 150 psalms. Not a single church service is complete without reading the psalms, psalms are our prayers in sorrow, in adversity, in repentance, in joy, in thanksgiving to the Lord. The Psalter is divided into 20 parts called kathismas. Kathisma, in turn, consists of three parts (three "Glories"), and each of these parts ends with the reading of the prayer "Glory to the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever, amen." Alleluia (3 times) ". The Psalter - A separately published book of Psalms, along with prayers and directions, can also be purchased at the temple. Such reading will be an observance of an ancient, widespread church tradition.

During all forty days after the death of a person, his family and friends should read the Psalter. How many kathisma a day depends on the time and effort of the readers, but by all means reading should be daily. When the entire Psalter has been read, it is read from the beginning. Just do not forget that after each "Glory ..." one should read a prayer petition for the commemoration of the deceased (from "Following on the Exodus of the Soul from the Body"). Many relatives and friends of the deceased, referring to the fact that they do not have time or do not have the Psalter, or do not know how to read Church Slavonic, entrust this reading to others (readers) for a fee or other remuneration. But prayer will be stronger, sincere, purer if a loved one or a loved one to the deceased person himself asks God for mercy on the deceased.

On the third, ninth, fortieth days, one should read the deceased 17th kathisma.

This kathisma depicts the bliss of those who walked in the law of the Lord, i.e. the bliss of righteous people who tried to live according to the commandments of God.

Obviously, the latter is not on earth, but behind the grave. Explanation of the sacred book of psalms. Archpriest Grigory Ivanovich Razumovsky. Kathisma 17.

This Psalm 118 is the largest of all the psalms, it is inscribed, like many of the previous psalms, with the word Alleluia. Its distinctive feature is that it is written (in the Hebrew original) in the alphabetical order of the letters of the Hebrew language, which is why it is divided there into 22 parts, each with 8 verses, beginning with one letter; each of the 22 parts contains a special subject for didactic instruction. In general, this is a song in praise of the law of God, or, more precisely, the prayer of one pious Israelite for deliverance, amid oppression and persecution, of true worshipers of the law of God from its wicked and treacherous violators, especially from the hostile true religion of the pagan government. The expression of the striving for a living and active knowledge of the law of God, the glorification of its perfections and the importance of keeping it, which are the essential content of the psalm, which runs through the entire psalm, all this gives grounds for recognizing the origin of this psalm in the time of the post-captive state of the Jews, under Ezra and Nehemiah.
Before proceeding to explain this psalm, I had the opportunity to see the book "Psalm One Hundred and Eighteenth, Interpreted by Bishop Theophan", 2nd edition of the Athos Russian Panteleimon Monastery. Having familiarized myself with this large book in some detail, I saw that it contains such a rich treasure of spiritual wisdom, which I would not have been able to exhaust in all the other days and years of my life; and therefore I decided, without stopping my work - the psalm explanation, to extract and present for the general benefit at least small particles from the great treasury of St. Theophan. In view of this, I recognized it as necessary to title this psalm here in the form it has. And from this same line I will speak not my own and not from other sources, but only what the above-mentioned book of Bishop Theophan will say. On page 7 of the preface of this book it is said: “In offering our reflections, we consider it our duty to declare that there will be little of our own. Everything will be borrowed from St. Fathers and teachers of the Church, who labored in the interpretation of this psalm. In the exposition, we will keep the division into osmism. Each osmism is run by one thought, on which verses are strung like beads on one thread. The very interpretation and reflection will show how true this is. What is the general form of the sayings in this psalm? These are not parables, but prayer addresses to God. Each verse is a prayer, but all about one thing - about fulfilling the law of the Lord. The soul, realizing that salvation is only in God, through the fulfillment of His holy will, converses with God, begging Him to enlighten, admonish, strengthen, deliver from internal temptations and external troubles, restore from falls, deliver from enemies, in a word - to give her, according to His mercy, to be pleasing to Him. Everywhere there is a warm speech, addressed to God directly from the heart. "
