The lay prayer rule consists of morning and evening prayers, which are performed daily. This rhythm is necessary, because otherwise the soul easily falls out of the life of prayer, as if waking up only from time to time. In prayer, as in any big and difficult task, inspiration, mood and improvisation alone are not enough.
There is a complete prayer rule, designed for monks and spiritually experienced lay people, which is printed in Orthodox prayer book.
However, for those who are just beginning to get used to prayer, it is difficult to immediately begin to read the entire rule. Usually confessors advise to start with several prayers, and then add one prayer to the rule every 7-10 days, so that the ability to read the rule develops gradually and naturally.
In addition, situations sometimes arise among the laity when there is little time left for prayer, and in this case it is better to read a short rule with attention and reverence than hastily and superficially, without a prayerful mood, mechanically read complete rule.
Thus, cultivating a reasonable attitude to the rule of prayer, Saint Theophan the Recluse writes to a family person:
“Bless, Lord, and continue to pray according to your rule. But never bind yourself to a rule and think that there is anything of value in having such a rule or always making it. The whole price is in the heart before God falling down. The saints write that if someone does not depart from prayer as a condemned person, worthy of any punishment from the Lord, then such a person departs from it as a Pharisee. Another said: "standing at prayer, stand as at the Last Judgment, when God's decisive decision about you is ready: depart or come."
Formality and mechanism in prayer should be avoided in every possible way. Let this every time be a matter of deliberate free decision, and do it with consciousness and feeling, and not somehow. In case you need to be able to shorten the rule. You never know accidents in family life?.. You can, for example, in the morning and in the evening, when there is no time, to read only the morning prayers and for the coming sleep. You can even not read all of them, but several. You can read nothing at all, but make a few bows, but with true heartfelt prayer. The rule must be handled with complete freedom. Be the mistress of the rule, not a slave. A servant only of God, obliged to devote all the minutes of her life to please Him.

Word psalm means song. This psalm was compiled by the prophet David, when he repented of a great sin - he killed the pious Uriah the Hittite and took possession of his wife Bathsheba. This psalm is called penitential, because it expresses deep contrition for the sin committed and an earnest prayer for mercy, and perhaps surpasses all the others in the depth of repentance. Therefore, this psalm is often read in the church during worship. All of us, guilty of many sins, should say this psalm as often as possible, delving into every word.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Sin is great, so the prophet asks God for great mercy. Only God's inexpressible bounties can cleanse grave iniquity.
Wash me most of all from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. The Lord has already announced to David through the prophet Nathan that he takes away his sins for repentance (2 Kings 12:13) - but David prays that God will completely cleanse him of sinful impurities. So we too, receiving remission of our sins in the Sacrament of Repentance, must nevertheless incessantly cry out to the Lord so that he destroys the very root of sin in us.
For I know my iniquity, and my sin before me is taken out. Have mercy, Lord, cleanse me! Sin burdens me, I cannot forget it, I see it day and night in my conscience, which constantly disturbs my soul.
I have sinned against You alone, and done evil before You, as if You were justified in Your words, and conquered, when you judge Ty (in the Russian translation of the psalm: so that You are righteous in Your judgment and pure in Your court). The prophet presents himself not to human, but to God's judgment (David is a king, and he is not afraid of human judgment). Having hidden iniquity from people, you cannot hide it from the Supreme Judge, Who sees everything hidden; before God's truth, our deceit is convicted - our untruth and wrong, and all our justifications are powerless.
Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins give birth to me, my mother. All of us, descendants of Adam, are conceived in sins, inheriting original sin. We plead with God for forgiveness by presenting to Him our natural tendency to sin.
Behold, thou hast loved the truth... (note the word thou art- it refers to the 2nd person: here, You loved the truth). You, Lord, are the Truth I am the way and the truth and the life- In. 14b) You love the truth and want us to abide in the truth. And I confess that You love the truth and hate falsehood, therefore I confess and confess before You that I have sinned.
The unknown and secret wisdom of Thy revealed to me- the unknown (hidden) and secret (that is, the hidden secret) of Your wisdom You showed me. (King David speaks of his prophetic gift, that God, by the Holy Spirit, revealed to him the ineffable mysteries of His Providence; but every Christian also receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacraments of the Church and, through the teachings of the Church, touches the hidden mysteries of God's Providence, and each of us is told unknown and secret wisdom of God: we have been taught the true faith, we have been shown the path to the Kingdom of Heaven.) How did I respond to these grace-filled gifts? Sin!
Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Here is the hope to completely get rid of sin and be filled with joy. The prophet likens to Hyssop the action of the Holy Spirit, which cleanses all defilement in us.
Give joy and gladness to my ears. Give me, to my ears, the grace-filled news of mercy, rejoice and rejoice me!
The bones of the humble will rejoice. The committed sin crushes not only the soul, but also the body: under the weight of sin, the bones become weak, humble; when the sin is forgiven and an unbearable burden is removed from the conscience, then the whole body is filled with joy (remember how sometimes we sigh with deep relief and straighten our shoulders).
Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities- cut them out of the book of my life.
Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb.. Restore the fallen soul to primordial beauty, destroying in me the impurity of the ancestral sin. Give me the grace of righteousness!
Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Sin tears away from God, from the Source of Life - and we pray that we do not find ourselves in pitch darkness, where the face of God is not visible.
Give me back the joy of Your salvation, and by the Sovereign Spirit confirm me. Reward, return to me the joy that I enjoyed when I was kept by You; give me the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
I will teach the wicked in Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. When You deliver me from sin and give me the Holy Spirit, I will again be able to teach the transgressors to walk in Your ways, says David, His chosen one, to the Lord. And for us, this vow contains the same thought as in the petition of the Lord's Prayer: hallowed be thy name in us, Lord; for if You cleanse our sins and by Your grace we begin to live according to Your will, then by our very life we will be able to preach Your truth and turn the hearts of people to You.
Deliver me from blood, O God, God of my salvation... Prophet David asks God to save him from the spilled blood of Uriah, in which he seems to be drowning (from the blood - a more accurate translation of the words of the psalm). The words God of my salvation are equivalent to words God my Savior- Appeal to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. With these words of the prophet, we cry out to the Savior to deliver us from the murderous effect of our sins.
My tongue shall rejoice in thy righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. My mouth is now closed with sin. Having received the remission of sins, I will not be silent, but I will testify of You, sing praises to You and glorify Your mercies.
As if you would have desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. You, Lord, have abolished the sacrifices under the law, which cannot grant remission of sins: the external sacrifice, offered without the participation of the heart, does not matter.
Sacrifice to God the spirit is broken; a contrite and humble heart God will not despise. The sacrifice that You loved is repentance and contrition of the heart; You will not despise a contrite and humble heart, O God (Russian translation).
Please, O Lord, with Thy favor Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. King David prays not only for himself, but also for his city and people, and asks the Lord to raise up the walls of Jerusalem shaken by his sin. But Zion and Jerusalem in Holy Scripture also represent the entire Church.
Then be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, an offering and a burnt offering; then they will offer calves on your altar. The psalm ends with the image of a sacrifice to God, offered in purity of heart and righteousness; having cleansed our souls with repentance, we will aspire to God with all our being and give ourselves entirely to Him, all our hearts, all our lives - this will be our "burnt offering".

This prayer book is intended for people taking their first steps in the Church, for those who for some reason do not have the opportunity to learn and understand the Church Slavonic language. It includes abbreviated morning and evening rules, the following and the canon for Holy Communion, as well as a reminder for Holy Communion. All this is offered in an adequate translation from Church Slavonic into Russian. The Missionary Prayer Book has passed the theological and philological examination. When compiling the prayer book, realizing the impossibility of preserving the divine beauty of Church Slavonic poetry, the compiler was guided by the desire for the most accurate transmission of the meaning of prayers. In the future, you, beloved reader in the Lord, will need a complete prayer book, which is used by most Orthodox Christians. The choice of translation was carried out on a large number of sources, the main of which was the book "Prayers and chants Orthodox prayer book with translation into Russian, explanations and notes by Nikolai Nakhimov.
