Its dimensions vary depending on the size of the workpiece for the body. You can put it anywhere in the garage, for example, at the side wall or in the corner. For this we need:

  • A metal barrel or a piece of pipe with a diameter of 300-400 mm;
  • Thick metal wire;
  • Blowtorch;
  • Large river stones;
  • Curved pipe for a chimney with a diameter of 100 mm.

Our task is to prepare the combustion chamber. To do this, we make a small hole in the lower part of the barrel (in the side wall, at the very bottom), into which we will insert a blowtorch burner. If you are using a pipe, not a barrel, weld the bottom to it, then make a hole for the lamp - it would be nice if this hole could be covered with something.

At the next stage, we take a powerful metal wire, bend it so that it forms an elastic stand for stones - the wire goes to the bottom of our garage stove. We lay rounded stones on it (there are a lot of them in mountain rivers), to the very top (the wire must withstand their weight). Next, we attach a chimney to our stove.

Before you start stuffing the garage stove with wood, make sure to place it on bricks or any other non-combustible base.

Now you can start the test run of our garage stove. Pour gasoline into the blowtorch, wait for it to enter the operating mode, carefully insert the lamp into the hole prepared in advance for it, wait until the stones warm up. After burning for only 1 hour, the stove will give off heat for another 3-4 hours. If you can make a chimney with a valve, the heat will remain even longer.

At the stage of burning a blowtorch, it is necessary to ensure the ventilation of the garage, since the stove takes air directly from the room (like any other stove from our review).

Making a potbelly stove

Let's see how to make a potbelly stove in the garage. Potbelly stoves are distinguished by their extremely simple device. Here are their benefits:

  • Omnivorous - these stoves can run on any type of fuel, both wood and coal;
  • The potbelly stove can be used for cooking - teapots, pots, pans and other utensils are placed on its upper surface;
  • Do-it-yourself potbelly stove for a garage will please you with ease of manufacture - sheet metal and a chimney pipe are needed for the stove;
  • A home-made potbelly stove does not require some kind of tricky ignition - just put firewood in it and set it on fire. Then you can put coal into it.

We upholster the walls of the corner with galvanized steel so that the heat does not go into the walls, but is reflected into the garage. When making such units on long-burning wood with your own hands, you don’t have to bother with exact dimensions. This stove is as simple as three pennies, but it has an important advantage - one bookmark of firewood is enough for the whole day. And it is the best suited for heating non-residential premises.

When making a wood-burning stove with your own hands, you need to take care of the selection of suitable materials. We will try to make a stove out of two barrels. We will need the first barrel completely, and the second will require only one lid. Here is a step-by-step instruction for making a garage heating stove:

  • We take a barrel and cut off the top of it (leave 2-3 cm at the cut off upper part of the side) - this will be our combustion chamber into which firewood is loaded;
  • We bend the sides of the barrel inward, and on the lid we perform the reverse operation - as a result, the lid should completely cover the barrel;
  • We make a press and an air duct - for this we need a cover from the second barrel, we make a hole to it and weld a long pipe, which should be higher than the barrel. On the reverse side, we weld pieces of the channel. We cut the edges of the lid so that it freely enters the barrel (the gap between the lid and the walls is about 10 mm). As a result, we should get a kind of piston. Air is taken through the welded pipe;
  • We continue to make a furnace for heating the garage - we take a cover for our combustion chamber, cut a hole in it for an air pipe;
  • In the upper side of the barrel we make a hole with a diameter of 100 mm and weld a piece of pipe - this will be a chimney outlet.

Now our long-burning garage oven needs to be put together and tested at the same time. We install the stove on a non-combustible base, load firewood into it (we advise you to throw any small things on the very top), connect the chimney. Next, we wet a piece of rag in kerosene, throw it on wood, and wait for a steady burning. After that, we put our piston inside, put on the lid and wait until our stove flares up to its fullest.

To make a wood-burning garage oven, you can also choose a piece of a suitable pipe - you can buy it at a metal depot. The amount of loaded fuel is determined experimentally. Please note that the wood in this stove burns from top to bottom, and not in the more usual direction.

Stove for garage working out

Let's see how to weld a stove in a garage that will work on working out - it will come in handy for those who repair cars and often change oil (for one warm season, you can collect working out for the whole winter). Our stove will consist of three parts:

  • Fuel tank - its diameter is 352 mm. We weld the legs to it, in the middle we make a hole with a diameter of 100 mm. Nearby we make another 100 mm hole, with a lid - here we will fill in fuel for heating our garage;
  • Combustion chamber - it is a vertical metal pipe with a diameter of 100 mm, in which 48 holes are drilled in 6 rows;
  • Afterburner - all unburned gaseous residues are burned here. Its diameter is 352 mm, it has a hole for the combustion chamber and a hole for the chimney (the same 100 mm). A partition is welded inside the chamber.

After the garage stove is assembled, you can start testing. We pour the mining inside, pour a little kerosene on top (in no case, not any other liquid, only kerosene!), set it on fire, wait until the stove warms up. As soon as a steadily burning, literally buzzing flame appears in the combustion chamber, the experiment can be considered a success. Please note that the recommended chimney height for this stove is 4-5 meters.

When making a garage oven with your own hands and choosing a suitable drawing, you should pay attention to the choice of fuel and start from this.   • a sheet of 6 mm for the vault of the firebox;
  • a small piece of pipe with a diameter of 100 mm on the chimney pipe;
  • reinforcement of a periodic profile with a diameter of 16–18 mm (needed to create a grate);
  • corner No. 4 and rolled metal for the manufacture of legs;
  • finished door handles.

Such a stove is ideal for a small garage that does not have heating and electricity. Such an effective design can be assembled with your own hands.

Assembling an efficient potbelly stove

It is well known that ordinary iron stoves are characterized by low efficiency (about 45%), since a significant part of the heat goes into the chimney along with the flue gases. Our design implements a modern technical solution used in solid fuel boilers - the installation of two partitions on the path of combustion products. Going around them, the gases transfer thermal energy to the walls, which makes the efficiency higher (55-60%), and the potbelly stove is more economical. For manufacturing, you will need a sheet of low-carbon steel 4 mm thick, a piece of pipe Ø100 mm and rolled metal for the legs and grate. Now about how to make an economical potbelly stove:

  1. Cut metal blanks according to the drawing and make openings for the doors of the firebox and ash pan.
  2. Weld a grate from corners or fittings.
  3. From the cut parts, make doors with locks.
  4. Assemble the unit on tacks, and then weld the seams solid. Install the flue pipe and legs.

Advice. The lower partition, strongly heated by the flame, is best made of thicker iron - 5 or 6 mm.

How to weld a vertical furnace from a cylinder

This stove-potbelly stove differs from similar units in the presence of an air chamber arranged in the upper part and completely isolated from the firebox by a steel partition. Inside it, heat exchange fins are installed through which the heated air is blown by a fan. For supplying cold and ejecting hot streams, branch pipes with a diameter of 40-50 mm are built into the cover, which is shown in the drawing.

Note. The organization of the air heating chamber in the upper zone of the firebox allows you to take the heat of the combustion products passing by it into the chimney. Since the flame covers the entire portion of firewood in a vertical oven, the air flow in a separate compartment is intensely heated, due to which the temperature in the garage rises quickly.

The first operation is the correct disassembly of a 50-liter propane tank. To displace the remaining liquefied gas, it is necessary to unscrew the valve and fill the tank to the top with water. After the grinder, you need to cut off the cover (the cut line is the factory seam) and proceed in this order:

  1. In the side wall of the cylinder, make rectangular openings for the ash and loading doors and frame them with a 3 mm thick steel strip, as shown in the drawing. Cut a hole Ø100 mm for the chimney.
  2. Make removable grates and install them inside the body on the welded corners.
  3. Make the doors of the ash and fuel chambers, attach handles and hinges to them, and then install them in the framed openings.
  4. Cut out a circle Ø30 cm from metal 4 mm thick - this will be the bottom of the chamber. Weld ribs from rolled metal waste to one of its surfaces, and then hermetically dock it with the firebox for welding.
  5. Make 2 holes in the cut cover and weld the pipes for connecting the air ducts. When ready, install the cover in its original place (but now - above the heat exchanger) and carefully go through the joint by welding.

A vertical potbelly stove in a garage is capable of burning wood of various qualities and humidity, including sawdust, as well as supplying heated air to any point in the room, which is important for greenhouses. In addition, it can provide heat to radiators and registers if they are connected to the nozzles in the upper chamber cover and the system is filled with coolant.

Attention! To avoid boiling water and breaking pipes, you need to create its constant forced circulation from the pump and install an open expansion tank. Use antifreeze as a coolant, because the garage is not heated around the clock.

Production of a horizontal heater

If you lay a standard propane cylinder horizontally and arrange a door at the end, you will get a fairly roomy firebox, which will include meter-long logs. For better heat transfer and afterburning of the resulting pyrolysis gases, it is necessary to make a secondary chamber with partitions, as shown in the drawing.

The afterburning of combustible gases in this potbelly stove is combined with the removal of heat from the products of combustion, enveloping hemispherical partitions (cut out from the cylinder body). Well, an indispensable attribute of intense heat transfer - external ribs made of steel strips - are required. Practice shows that such a stove heats a garage up to 50 m² in medium burning mode, as described in the next video:

In manufacturing, the heating unit is simple: doors are installed in the front part, and a hole is cut in the back, where the secondary chamber is welded from a pipe or a second cylinder. In order not to take away the useful volume of the firebox, the ash pan is made hinged. If necessary, a hob is arranged on top of the horizontal part.

Diesel fuel and used engine oil are very high-calorie fuels. If you get it inexpensively, then it makes no sense to mess with firewood and coal, it’s easier to make a reliable furnace - a dropper. Its principle of operation is to burn mining, dripping into a red-hot bowl. Moreover, along the way, liquid fuel has time to warm up, as it passes through the oil pipeline built into the pipe - the afterburner. For efficient combustion of oil, air is forced into the stove using a fan, and mining flows naturally from a tank suspended from the wall next to the heater. Another option is the forced supply of fuel by pressurizing the fuel tank (for example, with a hand pump).

Both a pipe Ø219 mm and a propane cylinder with a diameter of 30 cm can act as a furnace body. Making an oil potbelly stove with your own hands is a simple task, the main thing is to make holes and slots in the afterburner correctly and lay the fuel pipe to the bowl installed at the bottom. Wood-burning solid fuel stoves have one serious drawback: it is very difficult to achieve automation of the combustion process, and for some designs it is impossible. Periodically, you have to be distracted from business and throw firewood, which burns out in about an hour. Wood combustion is a complex physical and chemical process that occurs in several stages. During ignition, while the temperature in the stove is low, the wood heats up and darkens. These gases are themselves flammable because they contain hydrogen, carbon monoxide, organic vapors and carbon in the form of soot. It is the combustion of pyrolysis gases that gives a bright flame with a high temperature.

In a conventional furnace, complete burnout of pyrolysis gases does not occur due to a lack of oxygen. In long-burning furnaces, for the afterburning of pyrolysis gases, a separate chamber or compartment of the furnace is intended, where they are enriched with air oxygen. Thanks to this, a more complete combustion of fuel occurs, less soot and other harmful substances are released into the air, and the efficiency of the furnace increases.

To avoid excessive temperature in the firewood pre-burning chamber, air access to it is limited. Firewood begins to smolder, releasing a large amount of pyrolysis gas. Due to the slow smoldering of firewood, the operating time of the stove at one load is significantly increased, in some cases reaching 6-8 hours. This phenomenon is called the "long burning regime".

Advantages and disadvantages of long burning stoves

Like any other unit, such furnaces have their pros and cons.

The undeniable advantages include:

  • economical consumption of firewood;
  • high efficiency, up to 85-90%;
  • versatility in the choice of fuel, firewood, and waste from woodworking enterprises, and sawdust, and pellets are suitable;
  • small sizes;
  • ease of control - using a damper for air supply;
  • simplicity of design, thanks to which a long-burning stove is easy to make with your own hands.

Not without a long-burning stove and disadvantages:

  • during combustion, condensate is released, on which soot is actively deposited in the chimney, therefore, special requirements are imposed on the device of the chimney - it should not have corners, bends, its design should be as accessible as possible for cleaning;
  • in order to switch to the long burning mode, the stove must first be heated in the normal mode in order to warm up the stove itself and the chimney, otherwise the burning process will stop.

All the described features of long-burning stoves are relevant both for industrial heating units and for do-it-yourself stoves.

The design of long-burning furnaces

Long-burning furnaces have design features. They consist of two chambers or combustion zones, in one of which pyrolysis of firewood takes place, and in the other - afterburning of wood gases. The location of the cameras relative to each other can be different.

In some models, fuel is loaded from above, as a result of primary smoldering, firewood is compacted and settled, and gases enter the afterburner chamber, which can be located both below and through a partition on the side of the first chamber. Such stoves are often equipped with blowers to direct the draft into the desired channel.

In other models, the pre-combustion chamber is located at the bottom, and the pyrolysis gases rise into the upper chamber without forced draft. For such stoves, a fan is not needed, but the volume of the loading chamber is usually smaller.

To regulate the intensity of combustion, an air supply channel with a damper is made. It can also have a different shape and depends on the type of stove. To compact the fuel and more intense smoldering, some stoves are equipped with a load that lowers as the firewood burns out. Usually they have such a design.

Application of pyrolysis ovens

Long-burning stoves on wood, pellets or sawdust are often used to heat utility rooms and workshops, garages, greenhouses. They can also be used for heating a house, but it is necessary to ensure the tightness of the furnace, since carbon monoxide may be released.

In the case of using a pyrolysis stove for heating a garden or residential building, it is better to equip it with a water circuit connected to heating radiators, and install the heating unit itself in a boiler room.

Materials for the manufacture of a long-burning stove

Long-burning furnaces can be made by hand from sheet metal or various metal structures. Examples and drawings of such stoves are given below.

A do-it-yourself heater designed for heating utility rooms is made of a two-hundred-liter metal barrel. The stove runs on sawdust, shavings and other woodworking waste. A small barrel for loading fuel is installed on a stand inside a large barrel. Under it is an ash pan - a drawer made of sheet metal.

The stove itself is placed on a stand, the role of which is played by a car disk. A smoke branch pipe is made from scraps of a pipe with a diameter of 100-150 mm. The barrel is equipped with a sheet metal lid with a handle and an air inlet.

Inside a small barrel, a log sharpened into a cone is installed, it is indicated in the drawing. Sawdust is piled around it. After tamping, the log is taken out and the sawdust is set on fire. In the process of smoldering, gas is released into the space of a large barrel, where it is afterburned.

Furnace with a water circuit from a metal pipe

A home-made long-burning stove made of a metal pipe that can run on wood or sawdust is equipped with a water circuit. Loading is made from below, to intensify combustion, an air distributor is installed inside the furnace, pressing smoldering firewood.

A telescopic hollow pipe is installed in the center of the disk, through which air enters directly into the combustion chamber, where, thanks to the ribs welded onto the disk, it evenly distributes it over the entire surface of the firewood. It goes down on its own as the fuel burns out. You can lift it before loading with a cable.

The loading door is located in the center of the oven. Below is a cleaning door and an ash pan. At the top is a chimney. The stove is equipped with a water circuit with nozzles for water inlet and outlet. Such a stove with a water circuit can quite effectively heat small houses and other premises, and you can make it from improvised materials with your own hands.

Waste Gas Cylinder Furnace

A stove from a gas cylinder can be made without extra costs and finding the right material. The dimensions of a 50-liter cylinder are perfect for making such a stove, and the wall thickness and tightness make it safe to use.

The design of the furnace as a whole does not differ from the previous model, this can be seen in the drawing. A cut-off propane tank is used as the body. Do-it-yourself sheet metal is made with a suitable size cover with a hole for the air distributor pipe.
Fuel is loaded through the top, filling the volume of the cylinder almost to the chimney. Such a stove works on sawdust and other waste, as well as on small firewood. The fuel is carefully tamped, ignited with wood chips or an ignition agent and an air distributor is installed, after which it is covered with a lid.

The efficiency of such a stove is quite high, and thanks to the hermetic case, it can be used to heat rooms where people stay for a long time. If desired, it can be equipped with a water circuit by passing the chimney through the boiler.

The design of the stove is as simple as possible, it consists of only a few parts: a body, a cover, an air distributor and a chimney. For stability, the oven can be placed on legs from the corner. To remove ash from below, you can make an ash pan with a door.

Sequencing

  1. The remaining gas is released from the gas cylinder and washed several times with water.
  2. Cut off the top of the balloon. You can make a furnace cover out of it by making a hole with a diameter of 65 mm in the center. The edges of the lid and body of the furnace are ground so that the lid fits tightly onto the body.
  3. In the upper part of the cylinder, a hole with a diameter of 100 mm is made for the chimney and a pipe section 30-40 cm long is welded horizontally.
  4. At the bottom of the cylinder, an ash pan cleaning door is made. To do this, cut out a rectangular section of the cylinder body, grind the sections, weld the hinges and install the door on the resulting hole. The door is equipped with a latch.
  5. The balloon is placed on legs for stability. They can be made from a corner, pipe scraps or a rim.
    For ease of carrying, bar handles are welded on the sides.
  6. The critical part of the oven is the air distributor. It must be heavy enough to effectively clamp down on sawdust and wood chips, withstand the heat of the kiln, and have divergent blades. They can be made from scraps of a corner. The distributor itself is made of thick-walled steel - at least 6 mm. Cut out a circle with a diameter of 20-40 mm less than the inner diameter of the furnace with a hole in the center. A pipe with a diameter of 60 mm and a height greater than the height of the stove is installed in the hole. Through it, air will flow to the combustion chamber. The blades are welded at the bottom of the disc.
  7. The body of the stove can be painted with paint based on organosilicon compounds with your own hands, having previously removed scale, rust and dirt from its surface. Any other paint will quickly burn out, as the stove heats up to high temperatures during operation.
The temperature of the walls of the stove from a gas cylinder can heat up to 350 degrees during the fire! Care must be taken to avoid serious burns!

Homemade sawdust stove "Bubafonya" can be equipped with a water circuit. In this case, it is installed in a permanent place. Usually, this stove is used as a mobile one: it can be put in a greenhouse for the time of freezing, it can be used to heat a workshop or a barn in winter, or it can be used to heat a garage. Subject to fire safety requirements, Bubafonya is safe and effective.

After finishing work, you need to install the oven on a solid base, as an option, on four bricks. Next, you should connect the chimney to the pipe and make a trial kindling of the stove. This is necessary in order to make sure that the welds are sealed.

It is worth remembering about safety, any process of burning wood or coal is accompanied by the release of a life-threatening, insidious and imperceptible gas - carbon monoxide, which has no smell. Therefore, the issues of smoke removal should be treated with great responsibility.

This method is quite popular with motorists, since old unnecessary wheel rims can be found at any car depot or in a garage cooperative. The undoubted advantage of such structures is the large thickness of the metal of car rims, such a design will not burn through for a long time and will serve its owner for many years.
